Do you think it would be possible for Sega to produce a new console?

>> No.3579150

No. Consumers don't trust Sega and havent since the early 90s. Nintendo is the name people trust, with Mario being the face that they love. The sooner Sega dies, the better.

>> No.3579158

>>3579145
>Nintendo is the name people trust, with Mario being the face that they love

Not since the N64, now Nintendo is the name people associate with one or two good games per console, crappy gimmicks, and being strictly for little kids, soccer moms, and girl "gamers"

Only three types of Nintendo fans are keeping them in business, Pokemon fags, Zelda fags, and Mario fags....and each of them only gets one game every blue moon

>> No.3579159

>>3579145
I don't think they have the money for it and I'm wondering if they're into hardware enough via their arcade stuff for it to even be possible again.

also, I don't want another game box to throw thousands into so I'd rather they don't.

>> No.3579163

Possible? Sure. Smart? No. It's stupid for anyone to ever produce a console again. Watch what happens to Switch if you don't believe me.

>> No.3579180

>>3579145
If they produce one at the beginning of 9th gen (Switch doesn't count), with a very powerful RISC CPU and top of the notch hardware (instead of low-end garbage like the X1/PS4), one that actually can run all games in 1080p (ALL, not a few like the current ones), or 4K if that was standards by then, whatever.

Then and only then, it could succeed.

But if they made one, it would probably have an APU or Tegra because console manufacturers went full retard.

On the other hand, the Dreamcast kicked ass and yet people were stupid enough to prefer the PS2 instead, so releasing a great console isn't a guarantee either, people are just too stupid.

>> No.3579192

This. Connecting consoles to the internet has turned them into shitty PCs, having none of the convenience of just putting a disc/cart in and playing. Meanwhile, there is little point for a portable console because everybody caries a tiny PC with them everywhere anyway: smart phones tablets.

>> No.3579195

The Saturn & Dreamcast almost killed them.
Maybe after Nintendo's out of the picture but by then consoles might not even really exist anymore.

Maybe if they do a Neo Geo type thing where they make stuff specifically for a niche audience. Otherwise not really, people still think Sega is in the rut they were during the mid 2000s despite them releasing a lot of solid stuff the last few years.

>> No.3579218

Let me put it this way:

It would be both smarter and more possible for me to eat my way through a solid brick wall, than it is for Sega to put out a new console. Not only do they not have the money for that kind of thing, but even if they did, with the way the console market is now, it honestly wouldn't be worth the time and effort that they'd have to sink into such a project.

The reason why Sega is at where they are now is because the DreamCast was a massive failure. Almost as bad as the N64 Disc Drive and the Virtual Boy.

Sony will be the ones who keep console gaming alive. Nintendo will transition into being a software company like Sega although they will probably have some cute Nintendo branded cell phones that HTC or someone makes for them. Microsoft will become a powerful publisher of PC games. Active X and X Box will become essentially the same thing. Sony has always been a company that believes in purpose built consumer electronics and they have good relationships with Japanese software developers who will be resistant to making games for gaijin Bill Gates.

It's not console sales that make money and it's not consoles that give gamers good experiences. Sony is just the only company that I don't see a clear path to the post-console world and I also know enough about Sony's corporate culture to be confident they can and will ride a technology much farther than a software company like Microsoft or a puny little company like Nintendo.

>>3579307
It amazes me that they can't see it and you're also right that Sony would be wise to get cozy with the cable TV and satellite companies. Just because the PSX DVR was a failure doesn't mean it's a bad idea forever and it can definitely be taken as a little preview of their hand.

The Dreamcast 2 is right up there with crush in terms of fetishes that I don't understand.

Really, what would be the point? Sega still makes games and the release of a Dreamcast 2 wouldn't suddenly revive dead franchises. It would just mean that you'd have to buy it in order to play Sega games instead of just being able to play them on a Wii U/Switch/3DS or whatever other console they release games for. I guess it is just nostalgia, or the "Dreamcast is the best thing ever" thought that seems to bounce around on the internet these days? I got a Dreamcast right around launch and enjoyed it, but maybe it just didn't leave such a huge impression on me, or maybe since I was 11 or so at the time it wasn't as striking as it would've been had it been one of my first consoles.

Nintendo will never do that. They don't need to. Their games are legendary, and their reputation is almost bulletproof. That alone gives them a huge advantage over their competition. They also produce a unique product: a unified gaming experience.

Nintendo systems are nostalgia machines. They constantly recycle the same sound effects for their menus, the same music styles for their games, the same look for their hardware. You have to play a Nintendo game on a Nintendo system, and that physical feel adds to the gaming experience, and becomes part of it.

Sony has their signature controller, but no constant mascot-heavy games to give their company a single feeling.

Nintendo is the equivalent of an amusement park. They sell the sights and sounds, but also the smells and the feels. Ditch the hardware with its unique controllers and boots jingles and menu sounds, and just go with the software, then Nintendo gets lost in a sea of other developers.

it would really have to be something good like a dreamcast 2

and besides sanic that really wouldn't appeal to many audiences anyway

I disagree. I'd say the DS was the last good console, not just for Nintendo, but overall. There's too many good games for it to ignore it. The only thing plaguing it is the sheer amount of shovelware made for it, which a seasoned gamer should have no problem identifying and dismissing.

all bases have been touched in terms of genres. SEGA would need to reinvent arcade games or remain as they are.

I never understood why people think that if Sega made a new console it'd be called Dreamcast 2 when none of their hardware shared names. The Dreamcast was not the Saturn 2, the Saturn was not the Genesis/Megadrive 2, and Genesis/Megadrive was not the Master System 2. Yes I know there was a Master System 2 but that was just Master System hardware miniaturized somewhat and put into a different case, that's like saying the PS3 Slim is the PS4 and the Super Slim is the PS5.

Maybe they want it actually be a dreamcast 2?

Maybe they want it to be backwards compatible?

>maybe they want it backwards compatible?

So they either shoot themselves in the foot by allowing pirated discs to be played, cutting potential revenue, or shoot themselves in the leg by stopping pirated discs from playing, pissing off the fanbase AND cutting revenue.

Because Dreamcast 2 is guaranteed sales.

Neither Atari or Sega will make new consoles. It's an incredibly dumb idea. Sega has spent 10+ years building itself as third-party. Tbqh, I associate Sega with Nintendo more than I do their own consoles. It's lucrative to be third party. They also, let's be honest, aren't using their IPs besides a select few. Alex Kidd, NIGHTs, Billy Hunter, Space Channel, and lots of other series get no love because they don't sell millions like Sonic.

>Yakuza installments that are almost as bad as EA sports for recycling assets,

I don't mind recycling some assets when each entry adds a ton of content and new mechanics.
