It's a huge copyright mess trying to get all those arcades and games and all onto a DVD.

Either way, SAGCCX released the segments for those episodes as standalones. (personally I just keep a copy of the original sub on top of the DVD)

Doom 64 isn't just good, it's fantastic.

It's a different game from 1 and 2 though. Totally different campaign with almost identical gameplay (I'd wager the 64 version plays a bit better at the expense of no mouselook)

It's also a lot darker in tone than the first two games, with ambience and all that.

The store that he tried to play the game at stupidly was using Commodore 64 monitors to display their SNES games, Commodore monitors are known to have problems displaying games that utilize the Super FX chip or 3D games in general. If it had been a normal CRT it would've displayed just fine.

Try out a few more. Some episodes from the early seasons don't focus as much on the challenge and can feel a little bare bones. Some more recent ones are a ton of fun. Try the two Battletoads episodes. The game is tough, but Arino LOVES it. The whole ride is fun and entertaining.

You can also look for episodes of games that you love or know well, but you may get mixed results. Some of my favorite games have made for some very disappointing (for me) episodes. Related ACTUAL SPOILERS: Castlevania 3 turned into a dreary mess. Zelda LttP crammed like 27 hours of footage into ONE episode which was poorly edited/deceptively narrated near the end. Also, I found the Mega Man games to be a tough watch, as Arino never seems to grasp the concepts of dodging (especially enemy BODIES) and saving critical ammunition (he just taps the button like crazy and says OH, I'M OUT).

I actually really liked TV-Nihon's subs for the first seasons, back when there were SEVERAL MONTHS between every single release. Much later I was taken by surprise how shit they actually were in the tokusatsu/anime business.
SAGCCX subs are butt-ugly yellow, they tend to over-localize every single fucking thing that possibly could be and they don't have any kind of order to things. I'm still mad when they spoiled Super Mario Land way before it got subbed by doing all the later Mario episodes first and now they even seem to do whatever they can to get a quicker release of whatever Last Continue (a new sub group) announces to sub.

Can I just say, as someone who knows a few fansubbers, that the guy translating for Last Continue is one of the worst translators in the Tokusatsu fandom. I think he pretty much got chased off actually. Haven't seen him lurking the Toku IRC channels in a while. So all the power to SA for wanting to put out something better than what he's doing. In fact, I'm pretty sure he got called out about how much he sucks on the SA forums, and he threw a bitch fit.

IIRC he wanted to be a TL for SA, but his translators test came under the 75% error rate they allow. Like, way under. So when they told him this he threw a hissy and started his own group. I'd trust TV-N over him. I haven't read that thread in a while so I might be glossing over things a bit.

Kuso is spelled the same. It literally refers to fecal matter. It's just used as an interjection much like we use Shit!, but usually isn't as harsh of an interjection in Japan. Hence, why translators might use the weaker "Dammit!" or so.

What happened was that he offered to translate stuff, SAGCCX didn't have the time to proof his stuff so they were open to it if he got his own proofreader and then he decided to roll his own youtube channel instead.

From what I've seen of the SA team, they all SEEM reasonable. And I think someone from that other group even posted in their thread recently, and no one shit on him or anything.

But to play devil's advocate, it did happen like three times in a row now. That could very well be a coincidence, but I can't act like people who think they're intentionally dicking the other group over are completely out of left field or anything.

"Pro" translators' works is usually aimed for general audience which means you have to localize the living shit out of everything and cut as much irrelevant lines as you can so that even the most retarded amerikkans can keep up with the subtitles. Even in other countries (like here in Finland) you miss a ton of shit if just rely on subtitles.

Fan translators work for dedicated fan bases (especially in anime and tokusatsu), which is why the subs can be more elaborate and contain untranslated terms and translation notes (like unit conversions instead of going full imperial retard). I definitely wouldn't leave "kuso-ge" untranslated since "crappy game" gets the message across pretty damn well, but forcing western titles (like in Abarenbou Tengu) or inserting a shitton of swearing is not really something to aim for.
