I want to play an RPG next and I've narrowed my choices down to Breath of Fire 2 or Phantasy Star 2. Which one is the better game?

>> No.3567194

Neither is good, but Phantasy Star II is better.

For the time (late 80s) Phantasy Star II was one of the best JRPGs. The dungeons are pretty cool but the combat is shallow and repetitive and the game feels like a slog to play through.

Phantasy Star II can be a tedious, boring game if you don't know what you're getting into. Think Wizardry-lite.

Breath of Fire II is one of the better games in its series and a fun playthrough outside of the encounter rate (but if you're going against PSII then that's no issue). Play it with the retranslation patch.

I'd say BoFII is the better game just because it isn't bogged down by arguably antiquated JRPG gameplay.

I prefer Phantasy Star 2. Both games mostly involve wading through an endless sea of random encounters, but Phantasy Star 2 has better dungeons and a more unique aesthetic. Phantasy Star 2 is also faster paced, as it doesn't spend much time fleshing out the plot or characters, and the combat animations are faster.

I fucked up. Don't download emuparadise pre-patched ROM (>>>/v/355054826), it has shitty new anime intro song instead of that badass one used in the original (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4439q8mwqwc)), although its description says ORIGINAL TITLE SCREEN MUSIC.

Fist download this:
http://www.emuparadise.me/Super_Nintendo_Entertainment_System_(SNES)_ROMs/Breath_of_Fire_II_(USA)/33081

Then this:
http://www.romhacking.net/translations/1384/
Here follow the instructions to get the "Original Title Screen Music (v1.2b).ips" working. It's an extra patch to restore music. First patch the ROM of US version you've downloaded with "Breath of Fire 2 Retranslation (v1.2b).ips", then with "Original Title Screen Music (v1.2b).ips". Apply XP/Zenny x2 patch over them and use a "empty" save file.

If you skip "Original Title Screen Music (v1.2b).ips", before you patch the ROM of US version furthermore with XP/Zenny, your ROM becomes nothing but the notorious pre-patched ROM from emuparadise.

I played both when they were new. Both were excellent games in their prime.

PSII was a very early 16 bit rpg and it really shows. It is an unbelievably sluggish experience in it's original form.

The PS2 remake was fan translated last year and that would probably be a far more enjoyable RPG experience. The characters get more cinematic scenes and development and everything is a bit more "connected".

Also you get backgrounds in combat and not the bleak grid of the original. Faster walk speed and battle speed also helps but the original games difficulty is still there.

>> No.3568252

>>3568232

Hmm that was a bad example screenshot as that one still had the blue grid background. But Like I said it was more than just a graphics facelift. Faster combat and walking speed is the biggest reason to go for the remake.

>> No.3568261

>>3567287
All the GBA version did was up the EXP/Gold drops and some lesser encounter chances at the cost of audio and visuals. There was literally nothing else changed, not even any minor text fixes.

You can basically play the GBA version on SNES these days already, only thing being the encounters.

They are both great games. BoF is a bit more palatable however. Things like menu, and buying items are easier. The battles are less tedious. So go with that one. PS2 is legendary, but is tedious as fuck. While in 1990 or whatever it was great, it has not aged well in that area.

>> No.3568710

>>3568649

PS1 remake was a mistake but 2 was fine.

It lets people under the age of 30 actually enjoy the game's story and fantastic world(s) without having to endure that same mind numbing tedium that we oldfags went though back in the day.

If you are one of the "harder is better, older is more ironic and cool" type autists you can go ahead and pretend to enjoy another playthrough on Genesis but for anyone else the remake is just fine.

>> No.3568797

>>3568068
Then why are you defending BoF2? Both games suffer from a ridiculous encounter rate. They typically take longer to resolve in BoF2, though, which is part of why I eventually dropped the game.

>>3568232
The remake froze occasionally when I played it. That might be an issue with playing it through ESR rather than with the game itself, though.

>> No.3568887

But BOF 2 addresses the issue better I would say. There is an indicator of how "active" the monsters are, as well as items that lower the encounter rate.

Breath of fire has a high encounter rate as well but you get around a bit quicker and there are fewer "fuckhuge for no reason" dungeons to slowly crawl through.

Phantasy star 2 and 3 were notorious for their dungeon design, (not the difficulty, just for being boring as fuck and unnecessarily large and meandering with lots of pitfalls).

Phantasy star 2 only has like 3 boss fights in the entire game. It was from an era when big empty multi-level dungeons existed with one unguarded key item and no NPC or story developments occurred inside most of them. Just a massive complex to slowly explore for the treasure chest and then you leave. Pitfalls and random encounters every 4 steps punish you for exploring.

Pic related is part of an 8 floor dungeon (plus underwater passageway) but the lower levels were straightforward enough. You can wander around more and get healing items from chests, but like most dungeons it is not very rewarding to do so. The game came with a guidebook for a reason.

I prefer PS II out of those two. It's just more old school and less gimmicky. I love the old RPGs where you have access to to mid game gear from the start, there's just not feasible method to obtain them. It adds more to immersion IMO. PSII had a pretty good TWEEST and BOF II's MOMENT was pretty fucked up but PS II's had more impact for me.

That said though I'll pick BOF IV or PS IV over either.
