So what's the deal with this game?

>> No.3561383

They released it before it was done. If you play the GBC version, you can see where they were going with it.

That said, the combat is repetitive, the dialogue pretty meh, the scenario cookie cutter, and the level curve... well, you'd actually do better to go through most of the game totally ignoring the free level ups, then going back and collecting them all if you're going for max magic mastery. Not that you need it. Water and Rock and Stick will beat the entire game.

this is completely wrong the spirits you find have absolutely no effect on experience scaling for natural level ups

>> No.3561401

I don't know. One of my friends loves it but complains about bread. Never played it myself.

Can't hold a candle to Quest 63, but still slightly better than Quest 65.

>>3561396
Granted I'm only going by what I experienced rather than what is in the code (ie I didn't decompile it or anything) but it's my belief that the bubbly spirits act as a Rare Candy, leaving you at the same amount of experience towards the next level. Except that the next level needs more to get to. I went through the game grabbing every bubble that I could find and I was missing between 40 and 50 spirits to max out. I go through to Brannock grabbing none, go back and get all the bubbles and end up with one or two I can't collect because I'm already maxed out. Then again, this is all just my word.

Also, I'm saying nothing about the attack, defense etc. leveling. Because that's an entire different kettle of fish.

>> No.3561428

>>3561417
I find Quest 1-32 unplayable, terrible graphics. Quest 33 was where the series really started to shine, but then it was just phoned in for the rest of the franchise.

I just stopped caring after Quest 58.

>go back and get all the bubbles and end up with one or two I can't collect because I'm already maxed out.
Even if you get every spirit in the game you will still have about 10 or so levels that even fighting the highest level enemy rose knights or whatever will take something in the order of tens of thousands of fights to max out all your elements. so you are a gigantic loser or you are a cheater or you're full of shit.

no matter which way, leveling up and spirit collection are still treated independently, neither one has an effect on the other, the elemental levels from both are simply added together for what you can use.

The first. I really did take thousands of fights to max out the first time. Then I told myself "there has to be an easier way". Turns out that if you don't take the easy levels early, you can nab 70+ bubbles at the end and totally skip the hours upon hours of grinding.

Mind you you don't actually need to max out to beat the game, and in fact should not waste that much time on it. Except that this was the ONLY (non-pokemon) (non-Tactics Ogre) RPG on the system, and dammit, kid me thought he couldn't do any better.

I had the GBC version as a kid and loved it, even if it took me a while to figure out how the game actually worked (why NPCs will/won't give items, how mix magic, etc.).

I played this one expecting it to be a kickass 3D version of the GBC game and was pretty disappointed. Cut content and just wasn't as polished. Of course at the time I didn't know this one came out first.

The GBC game really isn't bad, and it's a shame it got so overshadowed by its 3D predecessor.

>Turns out that if you don't take the easy levels early, you can nab 70+ bubbles at the end and totally skip the hours upon hours of grinding.
you can go and empirically measure it if you want, get to level 10 or whatever without getting any bubbles, see how much one particular enemy gives you toward your next level, then do the same thing while getting all the bubbles, your 10th experience level is still going to be the same scale for experience returns.

It's actually an alright game, or at least I had fun with it as a kid.

I remember getting the N64 one soon after and being kind of let down. You know when you're young and you don't really understand that something is really bad but on a deep level you understand that it's really bad regardless?

I've heard that the best way to play it is by using a gameshark to remove all of the enemies and up stats to easily beat the bosses and then just approach it like a weird Yume Nikki-type game. You guys are making me want to play this again and I just beat it a couple of months ago. It's kind of eerie when you play this game because of how barren the towns and world map can be, but I find that interesting in it's own cryptic way. Does anyone know if there was an official guide for this game? I believe I have the Nintendo Power guides somewhere, but from memory I don't think it's a complete guide unless I'm missing issues.

Does anyone else dig the OST, though?
