I just replayed a whole bunch of the old ones with fan translations to see this for myself.

Basically, if you go onto romhacking.net and check out the translations for each game, there are usually three major full translations that get the highest ratings for each. A literal Japanese translation (Usually pretty bland and have weird item/spell names,) the official Square-Enix English translations used in the most recent release for each game but with spelling/grammar fixes (usually the GBA releases, and these are often terrible to begin with,) and a fan translation that takes the literal Japanese translations, fixes the grammar, and uses the item/spell/places/character names from the most recent English Translations.

You want that last one for each game. That usually requires patching 2-3 translations in order for each game, but trust me that it's worth it.

The exception is FFIII. The best translation for that one is the one by ChaosRush, as it's basically a translation of the most recent Japanese release of the game but with tone that matches the English script. It's very good.

I guess Namingway. They're all flawed in their own way. The DS one isn't bad except for that flowery shit, but even though GBA/PSP tries to hide it's old internet memes cleverly it still sticks out like a sore thumb to me.

Not like there were many, GBA/Mobile is the best quality one. The tone helps the lighthearted nature of the story along.

Here's where things get tricky. It's mostly whatever the hell you want. There was nothing hugely wrong with Woolsey's job especially for the shitty restraints and work conditions he had, it just kinda falls apart a little at the end and it needed to be censored. GBA/Mobile respects that sometimes a little too well, but screws up Kefka where Woolsey should've been left intact (if only because the original writer liked crazy clown man better). Ted Woolsey Uncensored and Relocalization Project both try to fix these with some success. I can't really say I prefer one over the other.

Personal taste, there are only 2 and Reunion is completely configurable. The re-translation is mostly leagues better, but I know everyone and their mother tends to go the nostalgia route with 7 at all costs.

Both translations are terrible. The original makes worse mistakes than VII, but fuck that shitty fake Ye Olde Englishe. And whenever I read Shakespeare it's usually in ye olde english.

I think Final Fantasy Restored does a good job of cleaning up the translation from the original. I hated the newer font but I see there is one that allows you to have options. The PSP and GBA versions have useless extra dungeons.

The new one from Chaos Rush is excellent. Adds a B Button dash and fixes the issues I had with the Neo Demiforce version. If you want it easier, go for the PSP version.

NEVER the 3D remakes. I am playing though Chaos Rush's version now and I find it needs some tweaking but it's otherwise very good.

It really depends on your preference. The game has been released so many times. PSP if you like modern graphics but for the original I'd go with Namingway Edition.

GBA for sure at least right now. Legends of the Crystals tried fixing the issues I had with the RPGe translation, but I prefer modern names.

Of all of the translations I've tried, Ted Woolsey Uncensored is the most balanced and it keeps the font. Relocalization Project changed it and it looks terrible even if it's on par translation wise.

I've heard there is a retranslation out there but it's way too literal. I know there is someone working on modernizing the names to offical Square canon, but he's waiting on the fan translation to be completed without errors. In the mean time, go PSX.

Unless you're trying to say his name is supposed to be Exodus, which is wrong. They changed Exdeath to Exodus in FFXII's US release because Square Enix's localization team has a tendency to change names for absolutely no reason.

Exodus would be エクソダス. デス is literally used as "death" in Japanese, so your complaints hold even less water.

Also, don't think he "made" Kefka as people know him. The way Kefka is portrayed in the japanese version is already extremely... bizarre. I've never seen anyone else refer to themselves as ぼくちん as Kefka does, especially not someone in his position.
Woolsey did a very good job with Kefka's portrayal but people seem to think Woolsey's is somehow more colorful or that he created Kefka's famous personality.
