So I beat EVE Burst Error today and I liked it a lot. Wanna talk about, /vr/? Also, are any of the sequels worth playing?

did you play the Windows version? how long was it? I want to play the pc98 but don't know if my Japanese is good enough for a vn yet and don't want to play the non pixel art version. there are way too few decent pixel art vns already as to lose on one more . I fucking loved yu-no though .

The artist for both versions is the same so you don't lose much of one version by playing the other (Art-wise, at least). In fact, the only real difference is that the PC-98 version looks more glossy, while the Windows version has more of an anime feel to it, because of the colors used.

That aside, the game's around 30 hours long, I think.

The Japanese seem to think the answer is "no", but I guess I can't personally confirm that.

I can definitely say "no" to the only other English EVE game though - not only did the translation quality drop like a meteor, it's also "incomplete" and they later released a completed version that you might as well have played in the first place, outside of the fact that it was never translated to English.

Eve's a pretty great game. About as good as YU-NO, I'd say. Granted, there are some things near the ending that I find kinda questionable, but it was a great ride nonetheless. Also, YU-NO came out after both EBS and Desire, which means the writer had more skill and experience by the time he wrote that.

>>3552101
The first game's translation isn't particularly stellar either. Rewrites aside, there's a fuckton of typos and some names were changed for no real reason.

>I just thought that with it being translated for years and playable even on a browser there'd be more people who have actually played it. Guess not.
I think Yu-No was in the perfect circumstances of being pretty good and translated when people were getting nostalgic about older Anime-like artstyle.

The "quasi release date" of a fan translation being released is pretty important because that's when things have the most buzz around it because very few people go out of their way to check out older games IMO.

Granted this is /vr/ so there should be more people willing to do that here, but VNs seem to be one of those genres where the "don't care about old stuff" effect is really pronounced.

I played recently Desire in asenheim and it was a pretty bad port with lot's of missing stuff animations and music, and I only did a couple of comparisons from gameplay videos and I could see a lot of missing stuff, I mean just the intro alone the wrong music is playing. They seem to have focused on porting the windows version as accurately as possible but the PC-98 graphics and music were just a quick after thought.

If EVE's asenheim pc98 port is as bad as Desire's I wouldn't recommend it. And considering the port seems to be focused on the windows graphics as well I'm not holding my breath.

It would be nice if tlwiki took an interest in translating Eve Burst Error and do the same Yu-No treatment

I'm just a sucker for dithering
The music is also a big factor, I'm a big fan of Umemoto's FM synth stuff.

Not that Eve has the best graphics from what I've seen out there though, even Desire was quite a mixed bag. But I still prefer them over the windows graphics.

Losing the voice acting though is the biggest turn off when going for the PC-98 version, that's why I so desperately want the tlwiki treatment.

>> No.3554125

>>3554118
I doubt even TLwiki can do anything about Desire or EVE. YU-NO worked because it was pretty much the original pc-98 game but on Windows, so making a hook that plays voices at the right parts was very feasible. EVE and Desire on the other hand are not available on PC in their original form, so someone would probably have to recreate them by scratch or somehow mod the Windows ports to be more like the PC-98 versions.

But this clearly shows the pc version art is a lot worse.
A lot less subtleties to the lighting, the background is completely destroyed also:
look at the streeet on the left picture and then on the right one. Also: there are no clouds in the sky in the second one.
And, well, no dithering and duller colors are ae minus point too.

It's the middle of the night, of course the clouds aren't gonna be all that visible and the colors are gonna look duller. If anything, the PC-98 version looks too bright. Also, making the hair look like it's made of wax is hardly what I'd call a subtlety.

Not the other guy but I think the portraits look pretty good in the windows version, definitely not a bad conversion, especially considering how bad the VN remasters go. There's probably gonna be more buzz about it (in Japan, at least) once the adult version hits.

Also, interesting fact about it: they're actually using the backgrounds from the first remake of the game with the shit character redesigns(and they also seem to have used waifu2x or some variant to upscale them, because I just upscaled the original background with medium noise reduction and the result is nearly identical.).

Guess redrawing the backgrounds was out of their budget or something.

Honestly, in this situation I think it's meant to be sarcastic/dickish, like answering "What did you eat this morning" with "Food" - he's currently slaughtering a bunch of enemy knights dispatched to kill them, being asked that question under those circumstances is kinda dumb. I absolutely adore the visuals of games like this and the thriller atmosphere that some of them have, but I just cannot play them.

I just find them so difficult, either they're games riddled with bad endings, which is ok but not my cup of tea; or they require to be at a very specific place at a very specific time in order to progress.

I forget the title but I played a game like this where you transfer to a school under the guise of a student but you're really a spy for the headmaster because weird shit is going on. I ended up playing that one with a walkthrough but the atmosphere in that game was top notch, that perfect blend of borderline bad writing and over-the-top drama.

What did you think of the "Mayako is a clone and also Terror" twist? Personally, I think it wasn't properly foreshadowed, Yeah, the name of the project and her codename were namedropped when Kojirou was searching through Midou's files at the embassy but I don't think that was enough. By the way, you have to appreciate the lengths the devs went to conserve space for the graphics. And finally EVE Burst Error R, which brought the original artist back, and has some minor quality of life improvements and other sorts of neat shit, like adding smoke effects to sprites with cigars, making Siria's boobs jiggle when you bump into her, and such and such. I'm pretty sure there must be some sort of easy encryption there.

I guess a simple explanation is that it's the conclusion to Al and Makoto's stories and "desires". Namely, to find Tina and reverse engineer the reactor and finish Martina's work respectively. By the way, what do you think of the true ending more or less implying that Kyle is Makoto's son?

Then again, I suppose if they really wanted to they could have milked the hell out of Yu-No without the original creators, but I'm thinking maybe ELF existing as a company meant no one else could touch it (IIRC C Ware died pretty fast and the license for Eve just kept passing around)

I mean it's okay. It doesn't look bad, it doesn't look amazing either. Did a pretty competent job but nothing that particularly shines through. His style also doesn't stand out that much when compared to his peers at the time. I kept wondering if he was the same Artist that worked on NGE, Sylvia really reminded me of Rei. He has pretty good linework, but the color treatment and shading is pretty much the same any animation cell receives, and considering these are just a bunch of static images it deserves way more detail to look impressive.

Although It would probably look amazing if they took those drawings as a base and apply the PC-98 dithering treatment.

What I mostly like about these games is the pixel art, so I have a huge bias going in. I hardly even played any VNs other than these old PC-98 ports, so I'm not really a fan of this art style unless it's animated.

One thing I find a little bizarre is those squiggly lines he adds to the Doctor and Kyle's jaw in the Portraits.

Shading has never really being his strong point. His digitally colored stuff looks particularly amateurish. His work on EVE R is pretty pleasant to look at, though.

Yeah that particular type of shading is often referred as "pillow shading" and it's often attributed to amateurs.
I guess the guy just did lines but was shoehorned into color treatment as well.

There are lot's of artists that only do linework exclusively and can't really handle color. I don't particularly like coloring myself and prefer sticking to linework and some simple monochrome shading.

I played Desire and it's not that good compared to Yu-No.
It touches on a lot of themes that Yu-No does as well, so I figure Kanno's main inspiration for Yu-No was taking what Desire was trying to accomplish but do it right this time.

To put it bluntly Yu-No is like an Adventure game that was forced to add sex scenes, but Desire just feels like a straight up porn game that was sprinkled with some loose story to connect all the sex scenes together, specially in Makoto's route. Which is not to say there's nothing salvageable about the story, but it's very sloppily told. The story starts off pretty slow as well, it takes a while before something remotely interesting happens.

The music is pretty good, as it's the same composers, Ryu Umemoto and Ryu Takami. Some tracks like Reflector ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4A1Y_Cdwog ) are amazing but overall I'd say that Yu-No's soundtrack is still quite better.

As discussed in this thread, the visual art in the PC-98 version is very inconsistent, ranging from okay to terrible most of the times, with the most good CGs being during sexy scenes or scenes leading up to it. Yu-No has some bad apples in some CGs for sure, but overall the art is way way better in all aspects, from character art to backgrounds.

Overall, the whole game feels rushed. Maybe I'm being too harsh since Yu-No established my baseline standards, but I'm not sure it's worth your time unless you're a Kanno fan and are just super curious.

This. Desire has a good setup but it all falls apart in the execution. Makoto's route should have been axed to make Martina's longer instead so all those plotholes and loose ends could have been addressed Eve's fucking excellent, though. Dunno about Xenon though, since I'm an EOP

Desire starts off OK-ish with Albert's route and then completely implodes with Makoto's which you're forced to play through to get the final path with the answers to all the mystery built up in Albert's path, but I can't say the payoff is that great... then again, Yu-No's payoff wasn't that great either IMO. Feels like the writer is much better at building mysteries and not the final reveal.

Seriously, Makoto's route, what the hell? It would have been a great opportunity for it to have been a "when you look from the perspective of this different character, you get new insights into the mystery" thing going on, but instead it's just a terrible NTR story that I suppose has some effect on Albert's route but probably not in a positive manner and it mostly just made me hate her a lot.

In hindsight, hilarious foreshadowing into the future of ELF though.

Also, you're not required to do Albert -> Makoto in that order specifically, and I'm just wondering how many people played Makoto first and were like "what the hell is this shit"

The vanilla Windows version has the exact same CGs as the PC-98 version, though some are censored for some stupid reason. The translation decensors all of the aforementioned CGs, and even adds some CGs from the Saturn port.

By the way, the CG viewer is only in the SP disk which is completely separate from the actual game on PC-98.
