SaGa Frontier is my favorite RPG. I love being able to build a team from several unique, interesting characters and seeing them go from being weak into full-fledged badasses within only a few hours instead of 40+.

I've played a ton of RPGs, though, and I find it difficult to find anything (old or new) that I haven't played or that keeps my interest. That said, suggestions? Assume I haven't played anything but SaGa Frontier, because maybe I'm missing out on some big series and I don't think of it?

TL;DR: What are some good RPGs with fun/interesting mechanics? I love playstation-era games.

I suggest roguelikes. Much of the fun of RPG character building but with more difficulty and room for strategy. They range all the way from fairly straight forward to hyper complex depending on what floats your boat.

"RPG" these days almost always means heavily story based which cuts way down on customization.

Why don't you just play the other SaGa titles? If you liked Frontier that much, they're pretty much variations on it.

That having been said, I recommend Metal Max Returns on the SNES.

What are some good roguelikes? I've played a few games that people classify as a 'roguelike', but that's usually just because they have random dungeons or permadeath. I prefer more traditional, turn-based RPGs to action games most of the time, too, although I did like Risk of Rain, Faster Than Light, and Rogue Legacy.

I've been looking into those--I'm hoping that I can pick one up later this month.

I haven't heard of that one before. I don't mind the look of games that much (SaGa has some pretty jarring backgrounds at times), so long as the mechanics are fun and engaging. I do like the music, characters, and world-building in SaGa Frontier, though--it's all very charming to me. I'd want a game to be able to pull off that whole package.
