Japan does not have a VINTAGE GAMING MARKET, like we do. For them to waste space for 1000s of Famicom carts when you can have them all in a SD card is more sensible in a country with limited space per living quarters.

People can go to Kyoto and buy a Famicom with over 100 games for about 15,000 yen (About $130 USD), but those EXACT same games as NES imports with a NES would be $800 bucks in our market.

We are all just a bunch of buy fags with all the space in the world.

Floor space is an issue but Japan just has a culture of not hording things or generally keeping things for a period of time.

This extends to pretty much everything in their lives including food.

So the whole Hikikomori with a room full of action figures and walls of bookcases full of disc cases is even more heinous to Japanese observers than the fact they don't go outside.

There is not a single game that sells for big bucks in American that has an expensive Japanese version.

Earthbound CIB ($1000) = Mother 2 CIB (3500yen/$29)

Little Samson CIB ($900) = Legend of Riki CIB (2000yen/$17)

jrpgs aren't particularly expensive in japan for the most part, a lot of people compare them to the market for sports games in the west. there are some particularly expensive titles out there though. yuuyami doori tankentai for instance is incredibly expensive although immensely obscure in the west. there's also a mountain climbing simulation game on the ps1 that looks extremely interesting that fetches incredibly high prices over there. it's called great peaks if i recall.

i am immensely jealous of their 1 yen bargain bin games though, i consider myself lucky to pick something up for 5 or 6 bucks at a local store and have it be even remotely interesting.

This is just the premium section of Hard-Off, where they put all the really rare or valuable stuff. Elsewhere in the store they have bins and bins of games, most of them for 108 or 324 yen.

I got Majora's Mask CIB with the expansion pack for like 2,000 yen a couple years ago. Outside of the big cities you can find some great stuff. Not counting MM, since I really just wanted the expansion, I've never paid more than 1500 yen for a game, and I only paid that for Parodius and Cocoron.

You can get "gorgeous CRT visuals" with original hardware and flashcarts.

Actual console hardware hasn't been hit too hard by the nu-wave, nothing like the games at least. With a few exceptions (NES, weebshit) you can still pick up console + all cords + controller bundles for $50 or much less easily. Flash carts are expensive but they're a one-time purchase, and at least you're supporting hardware hackers/science dudes rather than happy merchants.

If it's just the visuals you're after, a $0-40 PC CRT with fake scanlines is practically indistinguishable from the real thing. The only real giveaway for me is that the scanlines are even sharper than on my BVM, but I don't really find this as a problem.

Actually, I'd say the money making scam of "collectible" comics is far worse than games. The ps1 games are a relatively small, known set. The .cue information is not found in the .bin itself, but is only a couple tens of bytes long so it's not too hard to just store all the known rips in a little database. Also, 98% of games with only one .bin used the same type of .cue that basically says "1 track, all data".

I think redump.org hosts .cue files. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody scraped it or something and released a program. I think I've seen what you're talking about, try zophar

One thing you have to understand, is that stores that have been around for ages, have the luxury of selling games at a cheaper price, because they built up their stock when retro games were useless to most people and dirt cheap. You don't see a lot of these stores around any more for that same reason, not enough of a consumer base at the time, and a lot of them couldn't afford to tough it out.

Newer stores create stock mostly by buying from other re-sellers at flea markets and e-bay. Sure they get a deal now and then, but at this point and time, you'd be hard pressed to find too many average Joes who are in the dark on the retro vg market. And while most re-sellers are scum, and sell high for greedy reasons, some do want fair prices for all, but simply can't thanks to being raped in the ass by other, greedy re-sellers.

Not sure about stores where you are but that's not how it is here. I "get a deal" every time I buy something. I simply will not buy from another reseller at silly prices. I mostly get stuff from people looking to just get rid of old stuff for a few bucks and don't want to fuck around on ebay
I buy broken shit from other resellers for a buck a console or so depending on what it is. There are only two guys in my city who repair old consoles and I'm one of them.
I buy obscure items that other resellers would have sitting in their shop taking up space and never sell. I pay next to nothing for these. If they want a price I'm not willing to pay they can sit on it for a few months until they get sick of looking at it gathering dust.

The faggots who run the ebay rat race of buying and selling on razor thin margins aren't serious resellers. They're children or manchildren who can't get a real job.
