Retro gamers? Being hypocritical cuckolds that hate good games for no reason???

I'd have never thought!

i hated U8. it was a shitty adventure point and click game.
i consider myself well versed in early games but never even played crusader. it actually looks fucking cool and i will play it soon.

People hate Exteme Paintbrawl
People love Duke Nukem 3D

Bad comparison, cuckold. Both those games only share the engine

Origin made both U8 and Crusader

U8 has boring shit combat.
Crusader has exciting tacticle combat.

>> No.3546664

Pagan was an unfinished mess.
Did Crusader still have platforming with instant death?

>> No.3547142

Did ANYONE play crusader at all?

Because I fucking loved the game and sometimes I still play it again, thanks dosbox

tons of acid pits you have to jump over with poor controls

you could quicksave though so it wasn't that bad

>> No.3547147

Crusader had great death animations and spider mines. That's more than enough to make it 100x better than Pagan.

I actually liked whatever extreme paintbrawl game I played (3?). I was a dumb kid.

the death animation was great

floating up a second before completely being submerged by the acid.

Does anyone remember the faulty teleporter that melts your skin to the bones?
That was great when I was 8

I felt bad at first too, then I realised it was the no taste cuckolds that dictated society and that despite their bitching, don't understand/misrepresent the good qualities of U8

>> No.3548028

>>3546474
why are you comparing these two games?

being isometric doesnt make them similar at all

crusader is an action tactical game, you you can walk/run/roll/jump/crouch in 8 directions,
your character has health and ammo, thats it no experience, no magic.
enemies move and shoot similarly, and you gotta contend with security cameras and switches to play through the levels.

>> No.3548035

>>3548028
Because both use the same engine.

Pagan doesn't have experience either. You're supposed to get stronger by using your skills but you are normally maxed out by the time you leave the first area. The best approach to combat is to run past enemies instead of getting bogged down in clicking them to death.
Magic is kind of useless beyond solving puzzles. Most of the spells require complicated procedures to produce them and need to be activated from the chaotic inventory.

It's literally the first sandbox RPG

Not even Ultima 7 can approach its level of freedom of movement and interaction.

>> No.3548130

>>3548098
There are three games that use that engine: Ultima 8, Crusader No Remorse and Crusader no Regret. All three are isometric action platformers.

>> No.3548136

>>3548128
Ultima 7 was already cut down from Ultima 6.
I really don't see much freedom of movement in Ultima 8's linear tunnels or interactivity when touching anything unnecessary leads to your death in one way or another.
You should rather make that argument for Ultima 2.

>> No.3548210

>>3548136
>You should rather make that argument for Ultima 2.

Grid based movement. Who cares.

Also your other complaints are literally about how bad you are at video games -- which is typical of CRPG cuckolds.

Ultima 8, like GTA, is about figuring out the best way to break the rules to your advantage.

Because I say Ultima 8 isn't RPG, isn't sandbox, isn't open world, isn't interactive and wouldn't even have been the first to combine those?

>> No.3548332

>>3548250
>Because I say Ultima 8 isn't RPG

Yes it is. It has stats that level through experience and play along with armor and weapons and magic.

>isn't sandbox

Yes it is. You can go anywhere and do anything.

>isn't open world,

Yes it is. You literally can break the game by doing a late game quest early, but the game was programmed to detect this in case you did.

>isn't interactive

It's literally a video game you interact with. Considering how much of a retard you are, you probably think Ultima 8 is a box on a shelf.

>and wouldn't even have been the first to combine those?

Not in the way Ultima 8 did them. It's like saying first person mining/crafting games existed before Minecraft. Or games where you could hijack cars existed before GTA.

So what?

>> No.3548357

>>3548332
The stats are fixed.
>You can go anywhere and do anything.
Only in the linear order of the plot, Earth -> Wind -> Water -> Fire. It shouldn't have been too complicated to allow more freedom but that's not how it is. There's also next to nothing in the world aside from the main quest. Even Tenebrae is virtually empty beyond a few copypasted NPC.
The game is little more than a bunch of cutscenes tied together with platforming sequences.
Doing anything you're not supposed to do ends with you getting killed in a gruesome way.
>You literally can break the game
The game breaks itself all the time. Being poorly made is not a sign of quality.

I agree with you. Pagan is one of my favorite game settings. It's alien, it's weird, it's hostile. Some of my favorite monster designs to date in any RPG besides Fallout 1

People say it would work better if you weren't the Avatar, but the story is only interesting when you are a paragon of virtue who has to play dirty to survive.

>> No.3548631

>>3548491
I don't think you're really playing dirty. You're still doing good guy things like regime change, many of your actions even benefit the people of Pagan. Only toward the end do you act selfish and fuck things over just to get off the world.

I remember banging my head against that one level where they're going to blow up the rebel base for weeks, adjusting and optimizing my route, and then I realized that it was because I missed a switch and I only needed a third of the time I took.

I think Pagan wasn't that bad off. There still were remnants from the time before the Guardian.
Even Talorus could be saved. The only worlds beyond saving were those where everybody had died.

That's one of my problems with the game. Pagan had been build up as the Guardian's home turf but when it came out it was just another subjugated world and the home world relegated to the sequel, only to be completely ignored in the end.

I played No Regret and No Remorse and was looking forward to Crusader: No Mercy. I really wished Ultima 9 stuck to the original iso engine ... would have made for an epic game.

I believe that's the middle version where they used a top down perspective with real time 3D.
I don't think any images of the first version have been released.
It should basically have looked like Pagan with a higher resolution and with different scale for towns and outdoor.
>There is still an ongoing debate
about 'mono scale maps' like we have had in the last few Ultimas. In fact it
appears that for Ultima IX we are going to have two scales, town scale and
outdoor travel scale. This will allow more interesting travel by horses,
ships, dragons and such.

Looking for the patch notes of 8 I came upon a list of all the stuff cut from the plot.

exactly, Self Sacrifice is a virtue, so is Spirituality and Honor, it'd be dishonorable to deny someone their spiritual need, and if it requires sacrifice, its their decision.
