Wanting the best way to play Gameboy games
Deciding between the pocket, the light and a AGS101 GBA. what's the differences? Also will this be a fake? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/for-GBA-Handheld-Game-Console-Game-Boy-Advance-Backlight-Glacier-ags-101-brighte-/391565045083?hash=item5b2b186d5b:g:hpAAAOSwCGVX3Y6p

I personally think pic related is the best looking but they seem to be super expensive

>> No.3547990

Well, obviously the pocket doesn't have a backlight. What are you wanting out of the system? If you want the most authentic look, you should go with the original model. If you want easy portability, probably best to go with the SP since you can close it and it has a backlight. Never owned a Light and the SP I owned was I believe a different model, so I can't give the best input there. The SP will allow you to pick some different color palettes if that means anything to you.

GBA SP, no contest. Small size and has a lithium ion battery.

The form factor is fucking atrocious though, and GB/GBC games tend to look a bit wonky on Advance units. Also, why the hell does the battery matter, have you never heard about rechargeable AAs?

Colors and shit get wonky. Some late GBC games like Shantae are improved on Advance units though.

Cheaper to charge, doesn't get lost, longer lifespan, and I've not seen a battery charger since the 90s.

It has also fit in every pocket I've put it in.

Personally, I prefer the form factor of the OG GBA + backlit screen over the bigger GB screen and more accurate color reproduction on a handful of GBC titles. Not to mention the buttons, anyone who thinks the awful clicky shit on the SP is better might just be retarded.

It also supports the tilting games and other cart expansions that the SP doesn't, and isn't dependent on a specific rechargeable battery that is already out of production. With modern day rechargeable AAs, you can get a disgusting battery life out of an OG GBA, and with alkalines you still beat the SP.

I own the Game Boy Light, it's nice because it works well and has an authentic look, but has a lot of ghosting issues.
Depending on your preferences, go with an SP 101 if you're not bothered with the overall looks and clunky buttons, or an original Advance with a 101 backlit screen (which is the optimal experience to me, but to each his own I guess)

The pocket has bad sound compared to the big one, the speakers are too weak to give the right feel.

I have basically every game boy model in existence (except the game boy micro) and I can easily confirm the most comfortable and versatile one is the gba sp. The game boy light is just a gimmick: the light is like the one on a cheap pocket watch, and the ghosting is abysmal.
You can eather mod the model you find more comfortable and add a light to it, or just use pic related. That's what I do most of the time when I want to be the most comfy.
(Either that or the GC game boy player.)

Those comments don't make sense. Rechargeable AAs are of minimal cost to recharge and a GB using them today will last even longer than in days of old, due to simply having better battery tech now. And battery chargers are easily procured, it's not like they just disappeared. Lastly, a game boy (well maybe not a dmg) will fit in your pocket just as well as it always had. Not on the level of an SP perhaps, but it still fits.

Why don't you ask the seller to confirm in writing that the unit you receive will have a back-lit screen fitted? At least that way you'll have some redress with eBay / PayPal.

Get a Gameboy micro, an SP AGS-101, or a Revo K101 clone.

2 spare AAs, plus the ones in your GBA, will last you an easy 40 hours.

And then when you get home you can plug them in for later, and pick up another 4 batteries in the meantime.

>> No.3548405

Imo the best way to play original gameboy games (not colour) is with a backlit gameboy pocket (quite a simple mod if you can solder). You can get some lithium-ion rechargeable AAAs.

You can also get front-lit mods for the GBC which would be neat, too.

The link in the OP is obviously a fake. AGS-101 were only on GBA SP. And 38$ is too low for a GBA modded with a AGS-101 screen. And Hong-Kong. And they don't mention the AGS-101 on the full description.
Stay far away, I can assure you.

It's about on par with the NES gamepad or the original Gameboy pocket.

The shape of the ordinary GBA was excellent but the lack of good lighting kills it for me

There was a lot of aftermarket gadgets for the Gameboy because it was such an international megahit (+100 million units sold), some which made sense or tried to provide a worthwhile upgrade (such as lighting your screen), with various degrees of success.

There was an "arcade cradle" kind of thing, you'd jam your Gameboy in there, it had a magnifying lens for the screen, a fake arcade stick which would press on the DPad (didn't actually work that well), and had a big bank of batteries in the bottom to allow for longer play. You couldn't really see the screen that well with the magnifyer, but it would let the Gameboy put out stereo audio.

There was a lot retarded shit you could buy for the things.

They do look different on a GBA, kind of darker and the edges on the sprites seem thicker. I'm obviously talking about playing them non-stretched. If you stretch the screen those issues get bigger.

" Game Boy Color games

Some Game Boy Color games, which were not designed for the newer Game Boy Advance screen, may appear darker than they looked when played on Game Boy Color. If your Game Boy Color games still appear too dark on Game Boy Advance, you may want to continue to play them on Game Boy Color for the best results."

Game Boy Pocket:

* Same display size as OG GB, larger than GBC

* Crisp grayscale pixels without pea-green color or ghosting

* Doesn't have a backlight that will permanently fade in a few years (if it hasn't already)

* Uses removable AAA batteries that can be bought anywhere

* Sleek polished design, unlike the GBC which is overtly toylike

* Thinnest Game Boy

Super Game Boy is known to play the game program and its audio 2.4% faster than other Game Boy hardware. This is due to the use of the Super NES's clock speed divided by 5, which ends up being 4.295 MHz instead of 4.194 MHz.

Also no link port. So single player only.
