What have you liked or disliked about the castleVania games as they've changed? Do you prefer classic style restricted controls, or the exploration based free movement style more?

I'm thinking of making something similar to CV3, but I'm not set on how restrictive I want things to be.

I liked that in the classic games, you couldn't change your direction mid-air. I always found this mechanic of SMB weird and unrealistic. I also liked the falling speed, instead of floating jumps you slammed the ground (or fell into a pit) with a speed of a meteor.

What I hated was that the speed of moving on stairs was atrociously slow. I mean, even IRL it's not slow.

Do you play Castlevania on a touch screen? I tried and couldn't do it.

hah, not as a rule. I keep it on my phone so I can quick reference the game on the go when I have a question. Right now I'm just trying to remake a level or 2 of CV to get a feel for things before I start on my project.

SMB? Plenty of games let you change direction in mid-air. Revenge of Shinobi or Contra come to mind.

I enjoy more the new castlevanias. I prefer exploration and rpg-like features such as change equip, spells, etc. I also prefer the slashing rate of new games, it is just adictive.

I said SMB because it was obviously the game that started it. Everyone else just followed. IMO it makes some sense in SMB because it's so jump-centered, and also because you have to jump on moving objects all the time. But in other games, where platforming elements are simpler and you attack with a weapon, this makes less sense to me.

Contra is a bit of an exception for me. In NES Contra you couldn't lock your fire direction. So for example, if you wanted to move right but shoot up, you had to jump.

But otherwise, I'm against this mechanic. It just feels weird.

I love both to be honest. They offer two distinct styles I like. I don't know why people have to be elitist shits when it comes to discussing this wonderful series. Both styles of games are just fine and fantastic in their own right and were prevalent till the series died.

I love any kind of Castlevania, even the 3D ones from the PS2 era (even Lords of Shadow). However, I'm absolutely terrible at the arcade ones. I've beat a single arcade style Castlevania and I have only my lack of patience to blame.

Meanwhile, pick any other kind and it's much slower paced. It's a shame I never got to play the NES games when I was a kid because I grew up with my brother's Mega Drive and he never got Bloodlines/New Generation for it, so... in retrospect, maybe I would be better at these games if I'd grown up with them.

Some time ago I tried 1 and 2 and needless to say, I enjoyed Simon's Quest more because it's slower paced. However, because it's so ridiculously easier, I got bored of it.

Finally, Symphony of the Night is my favorite 2D Castlevania and it's such a shame there isn't a single game anywhere like it. Not for lack of trying, though, I've tried i.e. La Mulana but it's just not the same. SotN is a really slow burn and I love that in a game. The environments are so large and full of detail, so much secret shit in every area and the RPG elements are so much fun for me.

I'm also expecting a couple GBA Castlevanias to come in the mail, even though I don't really like the soundtracks on it. I don't know what the general consensus on the GBA soundtracks is but I think they sound terrible in any Castlevania for it. Compared to, i.e. Golden Sun, there's just no contest.

Then there's the 3D games, namely Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness. They're absolutely great and it's such a shame they don't get more love from the fanbase. Curse of Darkness is the closest a 3D game ever got to be like SotN; while it doesn't possess anywhere near the same level of attention to detail, it is quite packed to the brim with content. I also find it quite entertaining that it has such an obsession with... chairs. Furthermore, you can re-fight any boss anytime you want after defeating Dracula once, including him.

What was your take on rondo/dracx jumping? There was some conditional jump control, as well as jumping on/off stairs in those games. I kind of think that was the "sweet spot" for limiting controls but I go back and forth.

Stairs are a mechanic I tussle with keeping. They really did add something interesting and difficult, but stair sections are quite frustrating sometimes. I haven't decided whether I want to implement something similar or not in the future.

Yeah, I agree absolutely.

I just wish you always could be 100% you want miss when you jump to stairs, and also that the character could go down/up stairs just a little bit faster.

Yeah Curse of Darkness is pretty great overall.

Imo it's just shit that there is no new game+; and afaik you can't 100% it in a single play either (get every weapon etc) unless you keep stealing stuff from the boss rush, where you have to kill every boss or else it doesn't count....

But yeah, great game overall.

I really liked the different attack types of games like area and sotn. I'm wanting to do 2 or 3 different playable characters with different attack types.

I like both types of castlevania games, but there's something more satisfying about just getting good at a game.

good point, controls tended to be kinda rough around them. having a mount/dismount button could fix a lot

I recommend playing harmony, then circle, then aria. Harmony is good but it's tough to go back to after the others. All 3 are good but they're definitely not equal.

I enjoyed the crafting and rpg aspects of curse but it really didn't handle 3d combat very well. Weapons with a wide arc were preferred since it was so easy to swing off target in it. Lament avoided this issue by using the whip which had a wide aoe.

>> No.3546712

Gotta say, I really don't like CV4 despite thinking the rest of the series is great, however, CV moving sub weapons away from the button that got onto stairs was a good move, as you can do sub weapon attacks without accidentally going up stairs you are next to instead.

As to the physics, Rondo/CVX are where it's at. Games like IV and Chronicles that give so much jump control really break the game in a lot of ways. Same with whip directions really. In fact, yeah. Just aim for Rondo. It is truly the perfect middle ground for the mechanics of the classicvania series.

SotN is to castlevania what DQ VII is to dragon quest, a very polished entry, but in the case of SotN it is actually the best of castlevanias

The only classic castlevanias I've played are CV1 & CV3, so I'm not sure how Rondo, CV4 or anything else pre-SOTN did it.
I'm not a fan of the restricted jumps in them. I think being stuck with a single jump arc in CV1/3 was frustrating. About the stairs, I hated how you could fall through them to your death. Fix that and I would be fine with the stairs regardless of whether everything else about them was the same.

Stairs put the player in a place of greater vulnerability. You move a little slower on them for this reason, I'm guessing. Or at least it works toward that effect. The ropes in the GB games serve a similar function, though you're able to slide down them quickly.

I see. I just started Harmony earlier and played for a few minutes before work. It seems alright.

That's right, you have to know what to steam from which bosses ahead of time. Honestly I didn't bother to 100% absolutely everything, other than exploring the maps entirely and getting all the upgrades. I also got the little Pumpkin kid, even though he's basically useless.

Fuck the 3D ones.
