Hey /vr/, I found a Game Gear with Sonic 2 at Goodwill for $9 today and picked it up because I didn't have one.

It seems to work fine, but I notice it's extremely quiet. I can barely hear it at full volume. Is this part of the capacitor issue I hear so much about? Can it be fixed by someone without a ton of technical knowledge? I mean, it's playable, I can hear it reasonably well with headphones, but I wouldn't mind having it fixed.

Also, what games would you recommend? I notice games for this thing are pretty cheap, which I'm quite happy about.

Minimally, the audio caps need to be replaced. You should probably replace them all. I'd say its a medium difficulty soldering job as far as retro system work goes. If you have a friend that knows what they're doing then beg a favour of them. It's $7-8 for the cap set from console5, a little cheaper on ebay.

I picked a couple up too. One of them I can't get anything other than scrolling lines on the screen and the sound is faint. The other has screen lines which clear up after a couple of minutes powered on but the sound is completely dead.

I'm going to recap this second one and maybe use the first for spares unless it could benefit from the same treatment. I also got a TV tuner but can't seem to get it to accept a composite signal. Do these need recapping too or is it just dead?

Pic is games I have. Any dead wood or notable exceptions I should pick up?

>>3545978
You should pick up a master gear converter and expand your library.

Never heard of the tuner needing a recap, but idk. Open it up and have a look.

Screen lines could be caps or a dead screen. For the cost of some caps you may as well replace them and see what you get.

Shinobi 2, Tails' Adventure, Sonic Chaos, on top of my head.

Tuner: maybe the jack cable isn't wired the GG expects it to be? Unfortunately there's no standard pinout for video on 3.5mm; if you're lucky, the video-in is mixed up with one of your RCA audio-in.

>> No.3546830

>>3546807
Yet this console's battery life exceed the original 3DS' one, while packing in a full TV-set in (the GG is pretty much a standalone console hooked up internally to a standalone TV set) *and* having to deal with a power-hungry neon light.
The stupid meme needs to die.

>>3545663
GG Everdrive is what I recommend. Also a Game Genie, as the ones for the GG are neat.

As everyone says, its likely a capacitor issue, or your screen is dying. If that's the case, its either get a different used one or install the McWill screen (over $100). The plus about the McWill screen is it will look 10x better than stock.

>> No.3546871

>>3546830
What people like you tend to forget is that the Game Gear used AA batteries whereas the 3DS uses li-ion. When it can cost as much as $30 worth of batteries to power the device for a few hours you have a problem.

>> No.3546876

For batteries, what I did was use a 3s lipo battery (for RC hobbies) and use a stepdown regulator to bring it to 9v. Though that might not even be necessary. If you do this make sure to get the polarity right, as Sega used both internal negative and internal positive wiring for the DC jack, depending on the size. Using some sort of lipo source is the only way to go as it'll eat AA batteries

>> No.3546886

OP you should also get a 2nd game gear and the link cable (it looks like an HDMI cable) to play against a friend

>> No.3546909

>>3546860
OP here, why would the screen dying cause the sound to go out?

Also the screen looks fine. It's just the sound that has issues.

>> No.3546934

>>3546909
No original GG screen ever looks "fine". They range from crap (brand new back in '92) to unplayable (most untouched consoles at this point in time)

You're going to need to recap the sound board to get the sound working so you may as well go ahead and replace the whole lot at the same time as you *will* need to do it in the near future.

>> No.3546958

>>3546909
They used low quality caps all over that board, they're failing simultaneously. First order a security bit so you can open the case, and order a recap kit (and soldering iron if you don't have one). Then recap it all. The caps they used originally are junk and is why almost all of the issues occur.

I'd go for a SMS Everdrive w/ adapter instead. Much bulkier but more versatile: can play both GG roms and SMS games, plus can also be used on a MasterSystem natively to experiment with the stereo3D games on there for instance.

Would it be possible to cram lipo batteries directly inside the battery compartments (using two batteries, connected to the springs inside)?

Okay I swapped the video and audio RCAs and got a picture but it's black and white.

Is this likely to be a PAL/NTSC issue? I'm outputting from a yuro PlayStation and don't know the provenance of the tuner. Perhaps it's a Jap or North American unit.

Maybe, you'd have to do some pioneering work. I'd look into the x5c battery on ebay, you'd have to run two in series to get enough volts, and not sure of the lifetime, but it'd be cheaper than AAs. Or you could get rechargable AAs. Not sure which would be better, but the recharagble AA's would be easier. Though the play time would be short.

Are you using a regular stereo 3.5 to female rca cable? The 3 contact to stereo rca and composite cable wont work. on mine left audio was video and right audio was for mono sound (left audio)

rechargeable generally last 2 hours. it's also easy to get a belt clip battery pack and or power back and replace the battery with a more modern one. I have the belt pack with a rc car battery and it gets ~4 hours at max volume. I am contemplating the led backlight or biting the bullet and doing a mcwill. I hear it is 8-10 hours on AA alone so I am hopin for at least 12 on the battery pack. I also have a powerback to mod. Maybe with a new backlight, rechargeable AAs, powerbak and battery pack it will last as long as a gb on AAs

I managed to get a picture by swapping the leads over but it's black and white. This would usually point to a standard mismatch only both the source and decoder are PAL-I...

I have 4 GameGear I would like to replace the screen of, and I'm considering the mcwill solution for all since it's pretty much the only alternative screen I know of that
1) doesn't ditch RGB down the gutter
2) fits the GG casing nicely
3) preserves a relatively correct aspect ratio
but gosh, the price.

If there are cheaper decent options, let me know. I don't need the bells and whistles (scanlines, etc) providing the replacement screen actually looks okay from the getgo.

I have a belt battery pack as well. Haven't used it for at least a decade. I wonder if it's a safety hazard at this point and if it could burst to flame if I try charging it, eh.

Pretty sure the only other game in town was Tim Worthington's solution but that seems to be no longer available.

Just splash for the McWill kit. You won't regret it.

I dont think it will catch fire but I doubt the cells will take a charge. I used this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Duratrax-Onyx-7-2V-1800mAh-NiCd-Battery-Pack-w-Tamiya-Connector-DTXC2010-/190895342240.. beware the battery pack has unique security screws that are unlike the cart and console ones. I had to file the tips on a pair of needle nose pliers but maybe you could find the proper bit. all you need to do is cut the connector off the original and solder the wires together. You could prob just use a crimp connector too. I replaced the screws with standard phillips screws from a junk ps3

GGTV is another option, keep the stock lcd or ditch it and have a/v out

>>3547041
I was dicking with mine for quite a bit to get it to work right. Glad I could help. Was bored one day so I made this monstrosity. Pokemon Blue>Transfer Pak>Pokemon Stadium>n64>S-video>Trinitron>Composite>GG tv tuner>GG

The powerback is on it too.

Hmm, I just got one too. GG with a sega PowerPack on it for $15 from goodwill.

>> No.3549276

>>3549236

should have said just the ac adapter. its says it takes a 9v, but it doesnt mention milliamps or ohms. Im real sketchy about using different ac adapters or 3rd party ones. I do have a master system 2 ac adapter here

>> No.3549361

>>3549276
There are two different model AC adapters for the game gear. One of them is the same as the genesis 2. I don't know what the other one is. Voltage shouldn't matter too much, 9-12v+ should be ok. 850ma or more will be fine. Most important thing is the polarity. Get it wrong and you'll have a problem.

>> No.3549569

Found this link for correct adapters. Also y'all are right. The adapter type is specifically mentioned on the back of the GG and PowerBack- 2103.
