I didn't get a gaymen PC until the mid 2000's but I've become fascinated by retro PC games. The ones particularly with lots of depth and complexity. Ultima, Pre-Morrowind TES, Tie Fighter, Severance, etc.

How can I get into this world? I.e. what games should I start with? Dosbox still confuses me and I'm pretty dumb, keep in mind. Thinking of playing Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and Duke Nukem 3D first as they seem fairly easy to understand. Or I could play modern games that might feel retro? Pillars of Eternity for instance. I don't really have a preference in genre atm. Action, shooters, RTS/Strategy, Adventure. I'd like to try 'em all.

Also are there any shows you'd recommend? I loved Spoony's Ultima retrospectives, and AVGN is good for NES (but not PC).

ps. maybe a sticky for those interested in getting into retro games in general?

If you're gonna play Duke you'll want to get the eDuke32 sourceport
Also I'd strongly recommend Fallout 1 as a first retro CRPG, I'm not quite sure how to put it but the game was excellently paced and did a great job of easing you in at the start then ramping up
(Be sure to get at least 6 Agility at character creation though)

NOT RETRO but Civ 5 goes on sale once a month. Pick that up when you get a chance (the complete edition with all DLC/expansions)

You owe it to yourself to play the original Starcraft

SimCity 3000 is really good

>Dosbox still confuses me and I'm pretty dumb
You have two options:
1. get the GOG.com versions, they come with preinstalled and pre-setup Dosbox and are basically click and go, as idiot-proof as they come
2a. get a DOSbox frontend like DFend, it'll take care of all the commandline options and let you make profiles for games so you can just run them from the list. Could be tricky if the defaults aren't configured properly in the first place, though.
2b. Pirate a collection of games with a frontend already preinstalled.

As for recommended stuff, pic related (someone link the other one with floppy disks), or the wiki:

Series/games you should play:
Might and Magic
Wizardry
Baldur's Gate
Ultima
Unreal
Half-Life
Duke Nukem 3D
Blood
Age of Empires 2

>> No.3540385

If you liked Age of Empires II there's also Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds. It's like Age of Empires II with a star wars theme. Made by the same devs and plays very similarly.

>> No.3540392

Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 and 2. I would suggest getting 2 if you had to choose because they're quite similar but 1 has a lot more annoyances.

There's an ongoing general thread with a bunch of content including the scenarios from the first game recreated for the second game.

Oh and also check out the Warcraft and Diablo series from Blizzard.

Always wanted to do that. Make like a early 00 PC to play some 90s games again.

I wonder what kind of old hardware I would need to get the maximum quality of while not future wrecking it.

You can do it with any cheap PC with windows XP and a CRT screen.
I remember i played almost everything pre-2000 with a really shitty Celeron bought in 1999, including things like Quake 3. For some reason the first game that didn't worked well was Baldur's Gate 2.

For RPGs, do titles from rpg codex's top 50 (this image). Most of them are very accessible and good, which is why they're voted so highly.

I'm still wondering how a forum that seems to despise Bioware and shits on every Bioware game has so many of their games on this list.

>> No.3542658

>>3542654
They're tsundere. Also because those games are so popular and easy to get into. They're easy to nitpick but will always be highly rated.

It always seemed weird to me that Dark Souls between WRPG's.

>>3542654
The list isn't particularly good, but the order is. Placing Mask of the Betrayer above any Bioware game except for BGII means a lots of things.

>> No.3542692

>>3542667
The list is good for people without a lot of RPG experience. It's more of a highlights of the genre with a variety of systems, styles, and eras. The only games on there I wouldn't recommend to a beginner are the witcher, dark souls, and the gothics.

>> No.3542708

>>3542692
>The only games on there I wouldn't recommend to a beginner are the witcher, dark souls, and the gothics.
eh, why? those are the easiest to get into from that list, i had no problem playing gothic 2 night of the raven, but games like fallout 2 and morrowind were quite confusing without a manual.

>> No.3542720

>>3542708
It's not like I have any scientific reasons for saying so, but I feel Gothic hasn't aged well. Even to me some of its systems feel arcane. Dark souls can be very frustrating to people. And I just don't like the first witcher. I think beginners would be better served playing infinity engine, bethesda, and bioware games. None of that may be a good reason for my claim, but I wouldn't recommend those games to people who haven't played the more popular titles.

>> No.3542728

>>3542642
Since JA2 is on that list, what are the recommended starting settings for 1.13? Is setting it so enemies drop items on death too cheap or do the new systems balance it out?

>>3542720
Gothic holds up great. The only way it hasn't aged well is if you've never had to experience playing a game with just a keyboard. Even then, Gothic 2 has proper mouse and keyboard support (although I prefer pure keyboard). If someone is willing to play M&M, Ultima Underworld, Betrayal at Krondor, and Daggerfall, they'll find Gothic's control scheme a breeze.

>> No.3542737

>>3542728
Well Krondor probably has the easiest control scheme of all. If I remember correctly, all you need is a mouse and arrow keys.

>CRT screen.

anon, even if youre playing youre playing 640x480 DOS theres no fucking reason to use outdated eye soring technology, its not like early 90s PC games had rectangular pixels or computer CRT had scanlines lines like TVs...

srsly, why CRT?

I don't think it's a filter, more like the actual tsundere type of "I-It's not like I like Bethesda games or anything, baka!" *327856 hours in Skyrim*

Yes, eye soaring. CRT displays a glorious picture that makes old games shine like new again.

>its not like early 90s PC games had rectangular pixels or computer CRT had scanlines lines like TVs...
Most DOS games had rectangular pixels which scale like shit on LCDs and computer monitor scanlines do exist depending on the CRT and graphics adapter card.

>srsly, why CRT?
Because all 4:3 LCD displays look like shit with input/display lag, ghosting, bad viewing angles, severe blacklight bleed, medium grey black levels, and more. Newer, improved LCDs are all widescreen.

if you can't figure out DOSbox than you are an idiot and would probably be confused by the necessity of having to think to use golden age PC games versus console crap
