Reminder that there are very retarded point and click autists that don't like Grim Fandango just because of how it controls -- y'know, completely forgetting the brilliant writing, setting, graphics, style, music, etc

These people make me ashamed to be a fan of the same genre

They also randomly seem to hate Myst for some reason. Maybe Myst commercialized the genre in a way that hadn't been seen before, and I assume for an adventure game fan popular=bad

Grim Fandango is one of my favorite games of all time. I went into it expecting some light story but got sucked in and couldn't stop until I finished it.

The remaster is shit though, same audio, barely higher res backgrounds and models, expensive. I picked up the original in a mom and pop store along with Alice and Undying for $10. Worth every cent.

>>3535140
I don't even care about him, anything LucasArts made in the late 80s, 90s and early 00s was gold. They couldn't do wrong during that time. It was like the Simpsons S2-10 of games; they just had all the right people at the right time with the right chemistry and made amazing shit. Nobody cares about Double Fine or anybody else after they left LucasArts.

That's the execution, not the point, you idiot. It was a directional decision to present the story that way, and it was a poor one.

>> No.3535602

>>3535582
No, it really is the point of the story. The Day of the Dead is when the dead return to the world of the living to see their loved ones. Manny, however, has no interest in relatives or the living world in general. Yet he's also basically captured in limbo in his afterlife, stuck in a dead-end job and not progressing towards the Ninth Underworld - the land of eternal rest. It's only on the Day of the Dead that he DOES make progress. It's only on that day that he leaves what he knows behind and sets off on a new destination. And once he does make some progress, he returns to a passive state for an entire year.

The point of the story is that on the day of the dead, where most of the departed look to the past, on that day Manny moves towards his future.

Again, that's a directional decision, moron. Tons of games have acts. Grim Fandango had jagged act transitions, and deciding to dress it up as "he only progresses on the Day of the Dead" is lazy. It feels more like the modern Telltale games that are just one episode after another, instead of a cohesive experience, but I bet you think those are awesome, too.

I bought the remake and was pretty surprised by how incredibly half-assed it was.

They did overhaul the control scheme though, so it might be worth picking up for some folks in the thread complaining about the original.

Right here. For a simple reason: There is no reason for this shitty control scheme and it feels like crap. I actually like tank controls, when they are done right and for a reason, like in Resident Evil. I don't need point and click, but I need something that makes sense and doesn't feel like cancer all the way through. Controls are the most integral part of any video game, and if they are shit, it detracts, it's that simple. I still finished it, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I could have, because Schafer has his head up his ass. I got the remake cheap in a bundle and it is much better. I also like Myst a lot.

>> No.3536953

>>3536819
>no reason
You don't understand anything about tank controls. Tank controls exist for games that have static camera angles in a cinematic fashion that change as you move the character to a different part of the room. In Resident Evil and Grim Fandango this allows your perspective to change completely but your character to continue moving in the same direction.

>> No.3536996

There's a point and click mod so there's no reason to bitch.

>> No.3537221

>>3536953
Different anon here, Grim Fandango had issues beyond the tank controls. One of the things that REALLY annoyed me when I played through it is that it tries to "correct" Manny's direction when you run into a wall, so instead of letting you keep running in place up against the wall, you careen off at an angle. This is pretty sucky in a game where it's often hard to tell where exactly you're allowed to stand, and when you're often trying to get up close to objects so you can interact with them. Plus it just makes running in straight lines harder. I remember in Year 2, when you leave Manny's office and head downstairs, just holding forward will make you ping-pong around the room as you bounce off like 4 different objects in different directions. Shit's annoying.

I usually don't take issue to tank controls at all--I've played a ton of Tomb Raider--but it's unacceptable for the game to decide a new direction without you telling it to.

Honestly, while I liked it at the time despite the awkward movement, I've grown to become a bit neutral towards it. It's nice enough, the characters are fun, the story is entertaining, but I don't know, it's just missing something. When you consider that Curse came out just a year before, you can't help but feel like something was really lost in the switch to 3D in terms of gameplay.

At least it's better than Escape.
