Ryo's hometown (Dobuita?) from the first Shenmue.

There's something about that game that puts me into this serene, childlike state of wonderment and wanderlust. It's just a quaint Japanese suburb, and living there would probably be boring as shit, but through some unholy magic,Shenmue makes exploring everything SO MUCH FUN. So the ending of the game poses an interesting dilemma

The nightmare explains that if Link wakes the wind fish, the nightmare will end but it will also destroy all of the island and everyone in it

Thusly, Link is faced with the difficult choices of either living in the dreamland for the sake of Marin and everyone in Koholint, or destroy the nigthmare, wake the wind fish and kill everyone.

Thus, what's your face when you realize that Link decided to kill everyone, Marin, Tarin, the telephone man, everyone in the animal farm, the frog guy, everyone... all the lives in the island snuffed out for his selfish end of waking up and going back to reality...

Clearly not, or else we wouldn't have been talking about him.

Also, Link not being a dream is easily verifiable: he's a fictional character and Nintendo decides if he's a dream or not, and he isn't.

Truly, it's easier to tell whether Link is a dream than whether /vr/ is a dream. But they still went through the effort of designing it,putting it into the game and evern writing a unique music track specifically for it. And I don't even think you have to go at any point in the game if you just follow the story. This is why Shenmue was so mindblowing to me.

But yeah, the one thing it needed to be the perfect vidya experience was more minigames. Because goddammit,I want to be able to go to this dingy,smoke-filled mahjiong parlor a play a round or two in the company of some grumpy old men.

Damn, and now I'm wondering which NPCs actually frequent that parlor. I've never actually camped out there to check who the regulars are. I bet the owner of that Chinese restaurant around the corner comes there. :3

And speaking of restaurants, having a basic fatigue/stamina system wouldn't hurt, just so you could actually order food at all of those streetside restaurants and eat the snacks that you buy. Tom always kept bugging me about hotdogs, and I'd totally fucking buy them if I could! Nothing too invasive or involved, but just enough to make you eat something every once in a while, like in Deadly Premonition. Ryo could've had unique reactions to food and stuff, just to encourage you to try things.

...I really feel like replaying Shenmue now.

Zeal was legitimately Utopia for centuries though, wasn't it? Queen Zeal kicked the earthbound out after Lavos started driving her bugfuck crazy, but all humanity lived there for the entire time it took for the sunstone to run out of power.

Totally agree with OP, Zeal is my favorite area every time I run through CT.

CT had a lot of great music. One I really enjoyed was the 2nd boss battle, although I feel it was used at an inappropriate time, I don't think Masa&Mune deserved it. Also was anyone else annoyed that in the DS remake Magus doesn't say the "If you're prepared for the void" line?

Real talk?

Because of Zeal, I had for awhile this story of cosmic cloudbowls hovering above a dark surface world. Clouds which contained entire oceans which contained a bunch of landmasses.

And people would get around not by normal whimsical airships, but by airsubmarines.

And yeah. That title. This was before Skyrim was even a thing.

Breath of Fire's Kingdom of Windia has always been the place for me. It's always alive, full of life and each version holds some sort of mystery.

From BoF 1-4, Windia has always been a centerpiece location and place where you felt relatively safe even during the slow decline of the Windians over the years/games and political intrigue.

If I had to choose, it'd be either Windia 1 or 3. Windia 1 being the height of the kingdom and 3 being the blissful place-to-be.

Also windmills, bread and cute princesses.

When I was younger I used to love Lindblum a lot. I'd sometimes boot up the game and just run around the town talking to NPCs and roleplaying. Something about it made me feel really cozy and I can't quite put my finger on what.

My first time seeing it getting destroyed made me almost cry, goddamn it was that a good game. In fact, I'll start a new game now.
