Gonna start this game soon. What should I expect?

Slow battles, particularly in air. I hope you're playing on an emulator for fast forward.

GC version is superior.

This, but regardless it's a hell of a trip.

A pretty fun traditional RPG aside from those fucking air ship battles. Some of them are pretty easy, but others are just impossible to win without playing a guessing game with which tactics will win or not.

Still, I adored this game. Loaded with memorable characters and locations, some funny moments, some touching moments, some dark moments but never edgy, and it doesn't try to be weird or poetic, it's just a pure piratey adventure.

Personally it's among my favorite RPGs but I really haven't played very many RPGs.

THIS is exactly what I was going to say.

Ship battles were easy for me, all except maybe Vigoro and the Blue Gigas (though I hadn't upgraded the Delphinus in a while). The Bounty fights in Legends, mainly Lapen and Daikokuya (honorable mention to Vize), can be a challenge; 2nd fight with Piastol was noticeable tougher than the following two. You really don't play Skies for challenge and fun with its battle system, but there's options. I'm really glad you can get White Map in Legends to reduce the encounter rate.

First off you'd probably be better getting the GC version. It is legit much better.

That said, the game is pretty good, but the music is hit-or-miss and it has way too many fucking random battles. Yet you don't want to retreat from too many of them, because later on there will be this really tough optional boss who, while optional, you'll want to take care of, as they'll start completely shitting up your reputation (the game has a reputation system) until you do so. I won't mention any more about that, but you'll know when it happens.

The game's a cliche storm, but it's a fun cliche storm. Generally the game tends toward an upbeat, heroic Swashbuckler feel. It's also got a LOT of optional content for a JRPG.

Three people said the GameCube version is better, but no one says why?

It's really not. The bonus content isn't worth the horrible audio quality and censorship.

>> No.3529815

>>3529784
Isn't all the bonus content available on DC also, anyways? As DLC.

First off, the encounter rate is dropped considerably. Only those who haven't experienced the ridiculousness of the DC's rates can say it wasn't bad...and those who still do are on the worst kind of drugs.
Secondly, while the extra battles and weapons(I think they were joke weapons for Aika and Vyse) are available as DLC, there's more to the GC version. Bounties are fun extra diversions to get lost in, Piastol is a nice extra battle(answers a question people might have been asking for some time about Vyse, but mostly about Ramirez), and while the VMU game may have been fun, the new method of using Pinta for extras is better, even if the game is easy as is.
I will not argue: >>3529784 is NOT wrong when he says the music took a big hit. But considering what you gain for that hit, I don't think it's that bad of a trade-off(I have no clue what they mean by censorship...I didn't notice one damn difference in the game. Hell, one of the bounties even tries to make a move on Vyse, and let's just say he's not in Vyse's age range, if you get my drift.
Quite honestly, it's worth it just to go with the GC version.

You can skip the encounters if you open the pause menu when you hear a battle start to load on Dreamcast though.

>> No.3530530

>>3530514
Uh, no you couldn't. I tried that 'trick' a number of times, and the best you could EVER get was the chance to setup/heal your party for the upcoming fight.

>> No.3530560

>>3530514
I hear you can skip more consistently by sticking right by ladders, then getting on right as you hear the whir. But that's only useful in a few places, like Moon Stone Mountain.

>>3530505
>let's just say he's not in Vyse's age range, if you get my drift
I'd make an emergency escape from Daikokuya, too, after that slog of a fight.

Were Bounties part of the Dreamcast version's DLC or are they exclusive to Legends? I know the optional ship battles (like the mother Looper) were available on Dreamcast.

>> No.3530823

>>3530514
It's if you interact with something. Like open a chest, use a ladder or something, that will cancel the encounter.

The encounter rate was never bad in dungeons anyway.

>> No.3531329

>>3530560
Hah, right? My face probably mirrored Vyse's expression, personally.

No, the bounties were completely exclusive to the GC. As you noted, the optional ship battles, and the weapons were all that was in the Dreamcast DLC.

>>3530823
Ah, THAT would explain it. But yeah, as you say...the godawful encounter rate was usually reserved for the sky(until you got the engine upgrades).

Those were my favorite part of the entire game. I kept playing just to get to the next ship battle.

The iso I downloaded actually allowed me to cheat and max out everyone's stats before I started the game. I'm not a JRPG guy and just wanted to enjoy the story which is very charming. Like someone else said, it's very upbeat compared to what Square was doing at the time.

Even then, it's only maddening if you're lost, which I admit can happen quite easily. If you've got a good idea where you're going and move there in a straight line, the encounter rate is reasonable enough.
