No, I have a monitor that does 1920x1200 but after a certain point it doesn't matter. Don't get hung up on resolutions. However, the higher resolution it supports, the better refresh rate you can get at lower resolutioms. If you're looking for a monitor, look for a high resolution but only use it at 1280x1024 at 100+ hz

Usually PVMs have higher quality tubes and better circuitry. Downsides are the smaller size and the need for circuitry to use the DC coupled signal and separate sync.

none of my systems have been modded, and my pvm is a 14L2 which only has bnc for composite and Y/Pb/Pr, along with s video. My flatscreen has 2 hdmi and 1 component. I do not wish to mod at this moment, its something I will do later. so therefore I will stick to the best video signal avalible for unmodified systems that I can display.

I would need at least 8 composite inputs, a separate svideo input, and at least one each of composite and svideo outputs to eliminate the composite/svideo switchboxes. I would need an additional 4-5 component inputs to get rid of its switchbox, and two outputs for those systems.
oh, and two coaxial inputs. If I modded that would make my requirements even more difficult to meet.

thats 14 inputs, and 4 outputs, at the minimum for my current setup. Ive looked into receivers before and I've yet to find one with the amount of connections I'd need at a good price. this is also assuming I dont add any more systems, which I know Im going to do. Ive yet to get a 3DO, TG16/PCE, or Neo Geo CD, along with the eventual Laserdisc and betamax players, all of which would mean more inputs required.

NES and N64 require modding. genesis requires modding for rgb as well, but I want to mod it to s-video instead. SNES and Saturn require scart. I didnt know at the time that psp had component cables, I ordered some shortly after I noticed them for sale. Dreamcast is an issue of figuring out how I want to set it up, for the moment I will leave it as composite.

20" pvm is worth it due to it not being made anymore. As supply starts to dry in the coming years I'd expect the price to be 500-700 by the end of next year. Better investment than stocks. but how many electronics did you buy that came with component output or bundled with component cables back then?

You'd probably have a vcr over composite, which might even have stereo audio if you/your parents wanted to splurge. And there'd be a cable/satalite box which would use either RF or composite as well. Then sometime around 2000 a dvd player would join them, and although it probably could use component, chances are it came bundled with the standard red/white/yellow cable that would confuse your parents into using composite still (assuming your tv even had component inputs, I know mine didnt).

if your parents were like mine or my friends parents, youd end up with your own tv, probably between 14-20" that your dad had in his bachelor days, or they got on sale, which had mono audio over composite if you were unlucky, or a set of stereo inputs on both the front a back if you had a really good set.

saying that Y/C has been around since the 80's is like saying CD's have been around since the 80's. Yes they existed for consumers, but they didnt really hold a significant portion of the middle-class market (especially not the more competetivley priced market) until the mid-late 90' at least. Unless you specifically wanted that and were willing to pay extra to get it, you probably didnt have it.

yes it has a north/south or east/west switch and two position strength switch as well as a manual degauss button. Up here near the pole it has to be on max strength or the screen is tilted depending on which way its facing. The user manual said it was because of the size of the tube its sensitive to the earths magnetic field. it also said it would require adjustment after being setup but I never dis because I couldn't find a manual and it looks okay as is.

Don't get it wet. Don't let it get too cold or too hot. Don't run it at max brightness. Don't power it off and on rapidly. Don't press degauss unless you need to. Don't let it run out of spec (no sync, bad sync, no vhold lock, etc.) for extended periods. Don't leave a static screen up for prolonged periods (pausing for hours, etc.). Don't run it in 16:9 mode unless you're fine with uneven wear on the tube. Ignore the overscan button for the same reason.

Many games have stationary status bars for health/powerups etc, can that lead to burn in? Would it be better for the crt to limit it to say 1 hour of use at a time? I'm guessing these monitors were designed to run basically non-stop, but not with a static image (or portion of the screen being static).

If I could buy a speakerless just monitor. I.E. one of thise NEC or Mitsubishi monitors id take it in a heartbeat but most of them Unicorns have been captured. I found one on a govt surplus site the XM29 not the plus model. But they never got back to me. I was trying to figure out how shipping worked when id have a company pick it up.
Also I prefer eternal sound anyway sounds better and i have speakers so I might as well use them.

I learned something too, I didn't know the 16:9 enhancement squished all 480 lines into a 16:9 format instead of having black ars and reduced resolution. I've never used mine but tested it with the blu ray player and it's tits. you have to set the output to 480i 16:9 YPbPr and it works, mine is a 2 digit fv so it's manual. I need a new set as well but I am hunting a 955 or 960 wega 16:9 hdcrt for dreamcast + and movies

Actually you can safely ship then if you use reputable private carriers, ship via freight and use proper packaging. I received two 20 inch monitors (1x 20L5, 1x 20F1) from Harpo Studios last year on a pallet. They were pristine. Shipping was $250. The monitors were $25 total.

My two 20 inchers came in their own custom cut cardboard boxes with extremely thick bricks of black foam cradling them on all sides. We talk shit on composite, but that's mostly because once you've seen the better stuff it's hard to go back. Composite looks fine as long as you don't quickly A/B it with something better.

In the actual retro times basically everybody played using composite (or RF, which is modulated composite. So it will give games that """retro feel""", for better or worse.

For $15, I'd probably pick it up for now, and keep on the hunt for a slightly higher end, ~27" ish Trinitron which takes component and s-video. Post on here before you pick it up though, since some of the later models are "HD" which is bad.

I have a consumer, composite-only 20" that was my gateway drug back into CRTs. It still looks pretty good for playstation games.

S-video is a pretty significant step up from composite in image quality, many systems output it natively and the cables are usually cheap and easy to find. It would be my preferred method of playing retro games on a consumer TV, and is a fairly common input on mid-late 90s TV sets, and basically ubiquitous on anything post 2000. Yeah, it's a great time for PS2 stuff. There's some rare ish stuff that's just now hitting $30, but you can pick up great games all day long for $5-$8. Been loading up on black label, CIB THPS, MGS, GT, Ace Combat etc myself.

Got it for free a few years ago from a shop my mom's friend used to work at, already had been chipped with a Matrix chip. The hard drive was from some old shit PC and the USB-SATA bridge was a few bucks off eBay.

They are huge and heavy, in general. They have three tubes, one for each primary color. Due to the general nature of video and our world, some of those tubes get worn in faster than others. Some projectors were used to view 16:9 content so much that there's visible differences in brightness at the top and bottom of each tube. Some of these tubes were liquid cooled and/or focused (and are full of gunk, or dry, or whatever).

But yeah they look amazing when running properly and are pretty similar to regular CRTs with regard to response times.

I've got an HDD in my PS2 fat, but I was under the impression that you basically have to use an SMB share through ethernet for the slims if you want good speeds. PS2 USB is like 1.1 speeds iirc so games load even slower than the retail disks.

USB on that console is a dead loss for storage because 1.1. I can pop this one out in literally a few seconds and stick it in my Thinkpad Utrabay adapter for 100MB/s transfer speeds. I have FreeHDBoot installed on it too so don't even have to have a modded memory card for emulators and all that good stuff.

Total cost? Around 5 bucks for the Sugoi drive adapter, the drive itself was surplus (free) after I upgraded my Thinkpad to SSD.

Almost definitely not, at least in a dedicated cable. PS2 runs PS1 games at 240p in either Component or RGB and the PS3 upscales to 1080p. Both of these alternatives look great on a flatscreen. different resolution display differently on crts. test a few different consoles and see how the overscan looks. If you want to adjust the horizontal position there is usually a pot to adjust that inside the tv. just be careful and note the original position.

Different consoles start drawing their active video lines at different points than others, and also have differing horizontal resolutions.
Adjusting Horizontal Center or the equivalent option in the service menu will let you adjust the former, and Horizontal Size or the equivalent will let you adjust the width of the drawn raster. You'l likely need to adjust both in this case, since the image on your set seems correctly aligned on the left of the screen, but not the right.

Make use of the grid and linearity images in that Test Suite to get geometry correct(squares are square, circles around as round as you can manage) and then go from there.

You'll need to find the service manual or at least how to access that Samsung's service menu to do all of this, it won't be in the normally accessible one. And don't go changing all types of things around without knowing what they do, otherwise you could end up leaving it in MUCH worse shape than it currently is.

Poteniometer. A little knob to turn inside of the monitor, and something you're more likely to find on older analog chassis.
I'm not saying a mid-2000's Samsung like that might not have one or two floating around inside, but the service menu would be the way to go about adjusting things like this.

Screen size and center are some of the simpler things to adjust in service menus, so it shouldn't be too difficult or take too long to remedy.

Someone just put up a 14" Trinitron monitor in NYC, for $100. I thought about it but I decided it's not really worth pursuing. I've already got a 32" Trinitron TV that looks good and I don't think I would want to pay $100 or more for an RGB monitor unless it was a 20" model.

Yeah, I'm leaning more and more towards just saving up for a Framemeister. I've already got several CRT TVs and monitors and as much as I would love to get an RGB monitor for my consoles, it's coming less and less practical these days. That's normal. If you're worried, leave the monitor in standby. BVMs were made to be powered on 24/7 for months and years. There's two 14 inch BVMs in my station that have been confidence monitors for Comcast closed captions for years now. They'll probably continue to run for years before shitting the bed or being decommissioned.

Almost every consumer computer monitor I've manipulated in my lifetime has auto-degaussed when powered on. I wouldn't sweat it.

My earlier comment about not habitually degaussing was to deter people from being trigger happy. Degaussing is not a magic bullet; it's particularly useful in a few specific situations (mostly related to cardinal direction orientation or operation in extreme close proximity to other strong magnetic fields).

Remember to let your monitor warm up for a good 20 minutes to 1 hour before adjusting fine settings.

Just received a sony bvm-1910d, hooked it up, picture comes through from my SNES but only yellow. If I press the red button on the front, the colors turn to green, if I press the green button the colors turn to red, so it seems the guns are working but the blue button doesn't seem to work and it looks like the bottom tray took a hit in shipping. Is it likely just this button being messed up? It has a key lock and I have no key, any ideas? the other two color buttons click when I depress them, the blue just goes in and out

^ also forgot to mention this happens in both RGB and composite inputs. To rule out the SNES, when I hook up the composite/rgb to my 20" pvm the colors look fine.

Thanks for the info. I was able to get into the trey by prying the whole tray up at the key arm and it moved up enough to get the arm by the slot. If I can't get ahold of David Riddle, I might remove the lock (though its retaining ring is loctited) or cut the material away that is in front of the arm.
