Previous thread >>3492209
This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Usually PVMs have higher quality tubes and better circuitry. Downsides are the smaller size and the need for circuitry to use the DC coupled signal and separate sync.

none of my systems have been modded, and my pvm is a 14L2 which only has bnc for composite and Y/Pb/Pr, along with s video. My flatscreen has 2 hdmi and 1 component. I do not wish to mod at this moment, its something I will do later. so therefore I will stick to the best video signal avalible for unmodified systems that I can display.

>>3507084
>Get a high end mid-late 2000s AV receiver and you can eliminate the need for all of your switches (might need the hdmi one since most receivers maxed out at about 4-6 ports). Plus you get an audio setup
I would need at least 8 composite inputs, a separate svideo input, and at least one each of composite and svideo outputs to eliminate the composite/svideo switchboxes. I would need an additional 4-5 component inputs to get rid of its switchbox, and two outputs for those systems.
oh, and two coaxial inputs. If I modded that would make my requirements even more difficult to meet.

thats 14 inputs, and 4 outputs, at the minimum for my current setup. Ive looked into receivers before and I've yet to find one with the amount of connections I'd need at a good price. this is also assuming I dont add any more systems, which I know Im going to do. Ive yet to get a 3DO, TG16/PCE, or Neo Geo CD, along with the eventual Laserdisc and betamax players, all of which would mean more inputs required.

NES and N64 require modding. genesis requires modding for rgb as well, but I want to mod it to s-video instead. SNES and Saturn require scart. I didnt know at the time that psp had component cables, I ordered some shortly after I noticed them for sale. Dreamcast is an issue of figuring out how I want to set it up, for the moment I will leave it as composite.

>almost none of your systems have RF as their only output.
5200, 7800, and my 2600 if I used it. though those will probably be the first systems I mod when I get around to that. also my tandy's and atari computers output over RF.

I wanted to make a few myself but finding a wholesale source of the MultiAV connector is seemingly impossible. HDRetrovision sells 3-packs of the connectors for $10, but that's ridiculous.

Why the fuck would you go through all this trouble for a comprehensive and all inclusive setup when you're still using EIGHT composite consoles? There are very few consoles that people actually use where you're forced to use it. You should focus on getting a better monitor or better signals from your consoles before doing this dumb shit

You'd probably have a vcr over composite, which might even have stereo audio if you/your parents wanted to splurge. And there'd be a cable/satalite box which would use either RF or composite as well. Then sometime around 2000 a dvd player would join them, and although it probably could use component, chances are it came bundled with the standard red/white/yellow cable that would confuse your parents into using composite still (assuming your tv even had component inputs, I know mine didnt).

if your parents were like mine or my friends parents, youd end up with your own tv, probably between 14-20" that your dad had in his bachelor days, or they got on sale, which had mono audio over composite if you were unlucky, or a set of stereo inputs on both the front a back if you had a really good set.

saying that Y/C has been around since the 80's is like saying CD's have been around since the 80's. Yes they existed for consumers, but they didnt really hold a significant portion of the middle-class market (especially not the more competetivley priced market) until the mid-late 90' at least. Unless you specifically wanted that and were willing to pay extra to get it, you probably didnt have it.

yes it has a north/south or east/west switch and two position strength switch as well as a manual degauss button. Up here near the pole it has to be on max strength or the screen is tilted depending on which way its facing. The user manual said it was because of the size of the tube its sensitive to the earths magnetic field. it also said it would require adjustment after being setup but I never dis because I couldn't find a manual and it looks okay as is.

Don't get it wet. Don't let it get too cold or too hot. Don't run it at max brightness. Don't power it off and on rapidly. Don't press degauss unless you need to. Don't let it run out of spec (no sync, bad sync, no vhold lock, etc.) for extended periods. Don't leave a static screen up for prolonged periods (pausing for hours, etc.). Don't run it in 16:9 mode unless you're fine with uneven wear on the tube. Ignore the overscan button for the same reason.

Wouldn't that be more an issue with the underscan button? Overscan would still be using the entirety of the visible tube, where under would be bringing undrawn parts of the raster into view.

Many games have stationary status bars for health/powerups etc, can that lead to burn in? Would it be better for the crt to limit it to say 1 hour of use at a time? >>3519061
That is literally just a physical adapter that takes three RCA and feeds them over a SCART connector.
You need something that will actually change the color space between the RGB of SCART to the YPbPr of Component.

This: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/371647985464
is the most often suggested one because it is relatively plentiful and easy to find, and gives decent results after some tweaking. It will need a small breakout like this: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/302067263568
in order for you to get audio.

This: http://www.ani-av.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=22_29_51&products_id=220
is a higher quality one that's been brought to my attention recently and will offer better results outright, no adjustments required. It also doesn't require a breakout for audio.

Though I really would suggest you at least try out S-Video before going around looking for transcoders.

>> No.3519097

>>3519092
Also, pay no mind to the "SCART->HDTV" bit written on it. Its purely a transcoder and does no scaling. Resolution/Sync-rate in=Resolution/Sync-rate out.
Component is just more common on LCDs in general than older SD sets, especially in comparison to SCART.

Composite on a 20", consumer CRT is still an upgrade from the fucking horrible demon shit that i.e. 2016 Samsungs do to old consoles.

We talk shit on composite, but that's mostly because once you've seen the better stuff it's hard to go back. Composite looks fine as long as you don't quickly A/B it with something better.

In the actual retro times basically everybody played using composite (or RF, which is modulated composite. So it will give games that """retro feel""", for better or worse.

For $15, I'd probably pick it up for now, and keep on the hunt for a slightly higher end, ~27" ish Trinitron which takes component and s-video. Post on here before you pick it up though, since some of the later models are "HD" which is bad.

I have a consumer, composite-only 20" that was my gateway drug back into CRTs. It still looks pretty good for playstation games.

S-video is a pretty significant step up from composite in image quality, many systems output it natively and the cables are usually cheap and easy to find. It would be my preferred method of playing retro games on a consumer TV, and is a fairly common input on mid-late 90s TV sets, and basically ubiquitous on anything post 2000. It should be easy enough to find a TV for cheap or free that has S-Video, but if that's your only option where you live and you're fine with composite then $15 isn't much to fret over.

Yeah, it's a great time for PS2 stuff. There's some rare ish stuff that's just now hitting $30, but you can pick up great games all day long for $5-$8. Been loading up on black label, CIB THPS, MGS, GT, Ace Combat etc myself.

I haven't had much luck finding 'bargains' for GC, that train is currently pulling out of the station. I've still been buying backup copies of games at the $20-$30 price point though, since I'm pretty sure it's only going to get worse from here.

Apparently Xbox games are cheap as hell too but I have no strong interest in the system. Also I don't really expect these to get expensive in the future so I'm not concerned.

My son, let me tell you about CRT projectors.

They are huge and heavy, in general. They have three tubes, one for each primary color. Due to the general nature of video and our world, some of those tubes get worn in faster than others. Some projectors were used to view 16:9 content so much that there's visible differences in brightness at the top and bottom of each tube. Some of these tubes were liquid cooled and/or focused (and are full of gunk, or dry, or whatever).

But yeah they look amazing when running properly and are pretty similar to regular CRTs with regard to response times.

>The other kind of analog-video transmission is component and has three color components. RGB (red/green/blue) is the common computer-monitor standard and offers the highest quality of component video. RGB achieves a fully white-to-fully dark transition on adjacent pixels to optimize font appearance. For a common 1280×1024-pixel display with a 60-Hz scan-refresh rate, the pixel rate is nearly 100M pixels/sec. RGB components generally do not use DAC-reconstruction filters, instead transmitting the raw DAC output or a buffered version of it. Amplifier requirements are for a –3-dB bandwidth of 300 MHz, a slew rate of 1500V/µsec, and a settling time of 7 nsec to 1%.

>The typical RGB amplifier is a triple with an internally set gain of two. Back-matching resistors are external because IC processes do not give accurate resistor values. Single-supply amplifiers typically have a slew rate of only approximately 500V/µsec and barely settle within a clock time. At the highest pixel counts, the amplifiers typically run on positive and negative supplies; are current-feedback or slew-enhanced, voltage-feedback designs; and have more than enough slew rate and bandwidth. Linearity for these devices should be 1% or better, and dc offsets are not generally important because almost all monitors have a dc-restoration feature for their inputs.

Now keep in mind that the required min. bandwidth is half the sampling rate. Your amp needs to be able to amplify 114.75Mhz or faster, also look in the datasheet for the external components (you better use the recommended resistors only) as well as keeping your wiring short and use proper shielded cable (75ohms) as 'early' as possible. different resolution display differently on crts. test a few different consoles and see how the overscan looks. If you want to adjust the horizontal position there is usually a pot to adjust that inside the tv. just be careful and note the original position.

>> No.3524142

>>3524128
Different consoles start drawing their active video lines at different points than others, and also have differing horizontal resolutions.
Adjusting Horizontal Center or the equivalent option in the service menu will let you adjust the former, and Horizontal Size or the equivalent will let you adjust the width of the drawn raster. You'l likely need to adjust both in this case, since the image on your set seems correctly aligned on the left of the screen, but not the right.

Make use of the grid and linearity images in that Test Suite to get geometry correct(squares are square, circles around as round as you can manage) and then go from there.

You'll need to find the service manual or at least how to access that Samsung's service menu to do all of this, it won't be in the normally accessible one. And don't go changing all types of things around without knowing what they do, otherwise you could end up leaving it in MUCH worse shape than it currently is.

Poteniometer. A little knob to turn inside of the monitor, and something you're more likely to find on older analog chassis.
I'm not saying a mid-2000's Samsung like that might not have one or two floating around inside, but the service menu would be the way to go about adjusting things like this.

Screen size and center are some of the simpler things to adjust in service menus, so it shouldn't be too difficult or take too long to remedy.

Someone just put up a 14" Trinitron monitor in NYC, for $100. I thought about it but I decided it's not really worth pursuing. I've already got a 32" Trinitron TV that looks good and I don't think I would want to pay $100 or more for an RGB monitor unless it was a 20" model.

What drives me insane is that twice now I've seen a good deal for a PVM, contacted the seller, he never gets back to me and next thing I know the price on the listing has jumped up from something reasonable to $500. By now I am pretty sure it's the same guy behind both and he's trying to run some kind of scam. Yeah, I'm leaning more and more towards just saving up for a Framemeister. I've already got several CRT TVs and monitors and as much as I would love to get an RGB monitor for my consoles, it's coming less and less practical these days. There was that brief flash in the pan where all the studios and hospitals were getting rid of them and it was a great option, but we're fast reaching the point where you'll be better off with either going cheap and getting a component cable TV for $5 at the thrift store, or going ultra-modern with a framemeister.

If I find a good deal on a PVM I'll definitely spring for it, but it's looking a lot less likely than it was a year ago.

That's normal. If you're worried, leave the monitor in standby. BVMs were made to be powered on 24/7 for months and years. There's two 14 inch BVMs in my station that have been confidence monitors for Comcast closed captions for years now. They'll probably continue to run for years before shitting the bed or being decommissioned.

Almost every consumer computer monitor I've manipulated in my lifetime has auto-degaussed when powered on. I wouldn't sweat it.

My earlier comment about not habitually degaussing was to deter people from being trigger happy. Degaussing is not a magic bullet; it's particularly useful in a few specific situations (mostly related to cardinal direction orientation or operation in extreme close proximity to other strong magnetic fields).

Remember to let your monitor warm up for a good 20 minutes to 1 hour before adjusting fine settings.

Why is Composite so bad?

>> No.3530896

>>3530849
memes deserve good answers too sometimes. Here.

If I gave you a headset with instructions on how to paint a painting you could probably do it. Slow, and most likely close to what I wanted. Electronics are near instant and almost 100% what I wanted.

Pretend you are electronic and fast.

Composite is multiple voices telling you what color goes where and how bright for your picture. 5 different voices all talking at once. You need to do this picture so fast you mess up ( usually 60 times a second (or 50 if palfag). You can't go any faster, but you can't take longer either. Sometimes there is outside electrical storms or nearby picture creation rooms (power surges or other analog cords) that muff up the instructions too.

Component or scart for 240p gaming is like having 5 different people with different headsets. One for luma, one for blue, etc. The picture can't be completed any faster, but the individual person doing their job can focus better, creating a clearer picture. Component and scart sometimes have higher quality shielding too, so less muffed up instructions. (you can get thick protected cords of any type, but even cheaper YPBPR usually have better shielding that composite)

Something like S-video falls in between the two examples above.

Digital connections, like hdmi or DP, are still like you and a ton of others working together (depending on the cord , the faster the digital cord the more others there are to help do more cool things). You are instead given the image and told to trace it and make it look perfect.

It takes 6 Mhz to transmit a full luminance signal (black and white) at old TV resolution. Radio transmissions in the old days were just one 6 Mhz channel, so it worked out fine.

Then, they added in two color channels (blueishness and reddishness), but they still wanted to cram it in to the old signal. So they ended up saving like 60% of the original bandwidth for luma, 20% for blueminance, and 20% for redminance.

The end result is that the signal loses a bit of luma resolution, making things blurry, and greatly loses chroma resolution, which makes the edges of colors streak and spread out. IMO the worst part is the luma-chroma crosstalk, where sharp black and white transitions will create spurious color noise.

Composite encoding is an irreversible, lossy transformation.

Component uses three separate 6 MHz channels (18 MHz total), so it can carry the full bandwidth of the signal and doesn't throw away information.

I can understand the fear if you only own one CRT, but if you have a backup there's really no good reason not to safely, slowly fuck with every pot available inside a set. If you have a vectorscope, you're even better equipped to make changes.

I still haven't messed with the convergence rings on any set I own. I also have never added magnets or "rejuvenated" a tube, though a much older engineer friend of mine keeps offering to do so. He said he used to regularly flash tubes for fun back in his day. I'm relatively sure he knows what he's doing (he's a legit wizard with satellite tech and electronics repair), but I don't have a really good candidate for rejuvenation imho. I found this 32 inch CRT on Craigslist.

Does anybody know the model? Is it any good?

so even the non rear-projection TVs don't have scanlines? What's the appeal of them, then?

this every time

It has a front s-video which is a good sign. I'd grab it as long as it isn't an ed/hd set. Geometry and purity is the most important thing
make sure it's square and colors look right with all display settings at 50%

Many (All?) HD CRT TVs upscale. At the least they do some digital fuckery that adds lag.

>What's the appeal of them, then?
Decent colors and motion quality.

Why not get both an HDCRT and an SDCRT?
If you are going to go RP, look into the Mitsubishi.
