Could this be considered a shmup? And on that note, what are shmups that have unconventional settings?

I remember one game where you're a knight constantly walking forward while shooting everything but I've forgotten its name which may or may not be the reason for this thread being made.

I would suppose so. I have friends who straight up ignore the fact the Donkey Kong 3 ever existed, but I recall enjoying it while eating my tacos at taco bueno.

Yes. They made DK3 after galaga hot super popular and everyone wanted shooters. It was supposed to be a take on that whole theme. It's wholly its own thing though, definitely a very underrated game.

Could KiKi KaiKai be considered a shmup?

I bet it's this. Pretty neat game, one of Uematsu's earliest works and one of Square's first as well, as I recall.

I just found out they just announced a sequel to it the other day. Wow.

I always thought it was one. Didn't think there were people who felt differently.

Another one that's like that is Hi no tori for MSX (which is different from the side-scroller Famicom game).
It's very similar to Knightmare but you can also jump, it's pretty damn fun.

DK3 is very original because it uses a Space Invaders formula with platforming similar to DK1 and Jr, but for the most part is a shooter. Hi no tori also has some platforming even if it's a vertical shooting game, you have to avoid pits or mud that slows you down.

Probably because they got the license but got short development time so they had to work out something fast without making it shovelware. It's Konami so the quality is there, but yeah it's not a game that really lives up to the manga, it's barely related other than you play as Gao and the phoenix appears in the form of statues during the game, and the intro/ending.

Konami also did a Famicom game based on it, completely different than the MSX game. That one is a side-scrolling platformer, not bad at all, it's pretty good too, but also kind of doesn't really relate to the story all that much, you're just Gao fighting a lot of japanese ghoulies, like on the MSX game.

Proto Treasure made the MSX version, thats why.

Konami Computer Entertainment Osaka made the Famicom version, it is not as good as the Tokyo made MSX version.
