Don't bother, just make him shoot them much faster, and make them move much faster, I found that's more than enough to make him much harder.

See, because he'll fire off a volley, and you'll try to run and take cover behind a pillar, the first rocket will hit the front of the pillar, doing nothing, the second rocket will hit the wall or ground behind you, throwing you out of cover, then when this has happened he fires the third rocket at you, scattering you over the general area.

Just make the arena so you're forced to take cover, rather than circle strafe.

depends where the monster is placed, i mean revenant missiles in a giant yard aren't much bother as long as you don't forget to stop moving. if you sped the missiles up as well though that would make it a lot harder as the previous poster, whose post appeared while i was typing, says.

Honestly adding crazy stuff might just be a bit too similar to things like GMOTA and deviate from the Souls idea that seems to be the focus at least for now. Finding ways to make the DS formula in Doom would not only be rather unique in terms of mods available, and offer new perspectives to future modders, but also have a more compact theme to your mod and make it stand out more.

>> No.3506775

>>3506760
I'd say focus on adapting the base mechanics that define the Souls games, whether simplified or as complex as you like, then branch out into content additions later. Everyone's gonna have their own opinion on what they want added, so having systems in place that make expansions easier later on is priceless, as opposed to making some grotesque monolithic tech demo that needs a reboot every several months.

The most important thing is to have a vision that you know you're going to enjoy pursuing, because a project you don't want to work on often becomes a game people don't want to play. Have fun and see what happens, but try to stay true to the original formula to a repectable extent, and don't be afraid to rework things that can't be redone 1:1.

I think what I've got right now is pretty strong when it comes to the Dark Souls formula, my main goal would be to keep it enjoyable more than anything. So if I have to deviate then I have to deviate because I know some things just won't work in the DOOM engine

I think for now, in the very near future, I'm going to pull together a demo of sorts, maybe a few maps, one or two weapons and I'll release this demo for people to play with. Then I'll take any feedback/suggestions and implement that. Hopefully making for a better experience for everyone, myself included.

You are forgetting the best part, multiplayer in Doom wasn't even a planned feature, it was some crazy bullshit that John Romero wrote to hype the game.

Carmack figured out during the development of Doom how to get two PCs to communicate with each other in the game. Romero legitimately went apeshit when he fired a rocket at somebody else when he got to playtest multiplayer Doom for the first time.

It was also the event that gave birth to the term "deathmatch".

I mean I know what they supposed to be.

Are they faster than making a "model sprite" as the same efect was done before, but was slow AF.

>> No.3507562

>>3507547
Flat Sprites are faster to implement than using a billboard model and have less limitations - they can handle all the same alpha layers, ANIMDEFS, TEXTURES and other tricks as any other sprite, they're easier to animate via DECORATE and they're generally much less of a pain in the neck to work with in my experience.

Roll sprites are normal sprites that can be rotated left and right using DECORATE. Pretty no-thrills.

In the context of MetaDoom, flatsprites are used for blood splatter and shockwaves from explosions, while rollsprites are used for gibs and the Z-Sec enemy's dodge attacks.

It's a fuck of a lot easier to develop levels for the base game than a gameplay mod, as the "rules" of good design are much better established through 20 years of practice.

Also, gameplay modders just aren't very good at organising community projects. Or completing them. Term.

Some people feel that way - I don't really agree since the author is actually a decent coder, but his projects do suffer from quite a lot of feature creep and don't seem to have a focus. War of Attrition and his Star Wars mod have improved this at least.

WGR2 is still his best work because it was alongside a mapper so there was actually NEW gameplay to be had (although I think WGR2 has its own share of problems with texturing being an absolute mess)

It's the inherent problem with any identity-based community. People's accomplishments, both good and bad, get associated with their names, and people's opinions of these accomplishments get tied to them as a result.

The advantage of an anonymity-based community is that such things can be shed, which is terrible for archiving but fantastic for unfiltered and perception-free data.

But even that has its limits. We know Eric is good at DM but kind of a nerd. We know ijon is good at coding but keeps to himself. Etc.

Sword of Damocles
dmswrd.zip (53 KB, 2005-04-29) - Ray Johnson
https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/?id=13403

starting out a bit like e3m1 in a tree-filled yard this map then splits into two main pieces, firstly a fairly convoluted yet compact castle-style map (with some techy bits for no apparent reason), then after a final large courtyard it seems the author decided "no i need something more, i need a hook to name this otherwise fairly generic effort", so he drew a massive sword on the automap, textured it and made the walls lower like the end of e1m8, surrounded it with an arena, carefully shadowcasted it, then put a cyberdemon in a pit for you to deal with.

the first part of the level is quite short on ammo to begin with. i found it best to go for the chainsaw and backpack secret first. although you are largely unrestricted on where you must go, the route is not always obvious. the three keys - i'm not sure the blue is actually necessary but i wanted it for the plasma gun. the yellow is near an inescapable blood pool which i somehow never fell into, behind a red archway that resembles the e2m1 cross but then reveals itself to be a mouth and tries to bite you. the red key is in the curiously tech segment in the centre of the castle. there is a roomful of teleporters which you can ignore, but the way to the red door is technically a secret area, but it's fairly well hinted, a window to show there's a room behind a inset wall, with a barrel in front to show the wall is shootable.

the sword + boss encounter is trivialised because the previous large courtyard full of barons gave you a free BFG if you cared to jump into it. maybe a more cautious player from 1994 might not have felt the courage to drop into a courtyard with several barons and cacodemons or in case there was no way out. still it's clear the cyberdemon fight is meant to be done with rockets but they're not necessary.

good level, worth a play anyway.

Dumb idea time! How about categorized inventory in Hexen?

This was a 5 minute mock-up of an idea I had while working. You use the Chaos/Banishment device to "expand/collapse" your inventory bar. I figured with a little tinkering you could easily add categories for different items. I could see this being relatively useful in something like Wrath of Cronos where you have about 10 million different items along side Hexen's standard items.

sometime i'll be at a target and see a console game playing from 20 feet away and think "wow that looks super smooth, why doesn't my copy look like that?" but then realize, of course mine looks just like that. it's just that when i play on a big tv it's literally saturating my optic nerve and i lose the full sensation of movement that i get when i see it from further away.

Sort of, you could brace and try to keep control of it in runaway full-auto, but you'd have a really difficult time keeping it on target.

Not that you'd use a machinegun like that in sustained full-auto fire anyway, you'd use it in repeated bursts, and ideally with another machinegunner (or two), to take turns firing as you pause (this is called 'talking' machineguns), to make sure your gun doesn't overheat at a bad time.

It'd also depend on what kind of machinegun you're looking at, a GPMG in a full-sized rifle cartridge can be tougher (though not impossible) to handle standing:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIX9wCktVQc

The MG3 for example is derived from the old Wehrmacht MG42, known for it's very high rate of fire, so it's among the less easy ones, (something like an M240B would be easier), the rate of fire in the .webm makes me think MG3 tier.
You really want to use a bipod with a weapon like this.

But something like an LMG/SAW in an intermediate cartridge (like used in an assault rifle) would be much easier to handle.

What mod is that anyway, Mutiny? It looks different.

Certainly, you have to offset them somehow.

I only gave the mod a twirl since Term has a year-old video on weapon feedback and he mentions the Psychic shotgun often at the start of it. I'm still having some fun with the mod at least with blasting fuckers with lightning and pillars of fire, but I think I held my expectations a bit high.

Giving it some thought Guncaster does seem to share similar mechanics with guns/magic/shop, but in stark contrast Cyg is overpowered as fuck though it's still all good fun. Is there a middle ground equivalent I'm not aware of by any chance?

My machine has 2011-2012 parts but still, have you tried running nuts.wad on PrBoom+'s GL port? 144 FPS throughout the entire ordeal at 1920x1080. At least on the first part of the map I go down to about sub-20 FPS on GZDoom. Obviously the latter is a lot more advanced, but still.

Of recent, MetaDoom blood splatters really add up and kill the framerate so I have to enable the fast cleanup on maps with significantly high monster counts. Assuming the target is 60 FPS, there's notable dips in stuff like Gutrot Island and Reel Stadium on Reelism.

You know I was gonna make fun of the Engrish, but honestly, this map, with it's music, was kind of creepy.

What was with all those Revenants in tubes anyway? They got loose and immediately teleported away, checked later and they were counted as dead, what's up with that?

>>3510942
Bloodstain, though mainly since it's built to focus a lot on you taking cover to survive encounters, and I know I'm good at running from cover to cover and how to use that against each monster.

It was also very nicely challenging, it never felt unfair or tedious, if I ran into an encounter that kept killing me, I'd eventually figure out a way to persevere, and it'd feel rewarding.
Level design was pretty too, without being too cluttered, I really wish it to win a Cacoward, or at least get nominated, because I feel it deserves recognition.

are we talking about pl or pl2 here?

for me, when pl2 came out, i decided i should actually bother to play through the original (having moved from doom2 to pwads, skipping final doom for years -- it was harder to get hold of in the late nineties / early 00s). i had UV-maxed a couple of the maps but most i hadn't even seen, so i maxed them all on HNTR just to learn them. this was a strange experience of constant deja vu - so many plutonia maps are homaged in various pwads it was like i'd played much of it before, even though i knew i hadn't. anyway a few years after this i started a random plutonia map on UV - map 20, death's domain - and managed to max it, so i set about doing the rest. it took a few months but eventually i was able to cross them all off the list.

pl2 is a whole other problem. i have maxed all the maps on HNTR, and a few on UV, but most are beyond me on the higher skill. occasionally, i will start a map randomly chosen from the ones i've not yet maxed on UV, but rarely do i get very far. pl2 is much more "modern" in its difficulty level, and i find myself hopelessly outmatched.

>You may have noticed that when playing with mouselook with the original Blood, Redneck Rampage, Shadow Warrior or Duke3D executables it feels awful. This is because of some crappy filtering code that is implemented on all of them that stops both axes from being updated at the same time, giving preference to the one with the most velocity.

>Using 3D Realm's external controller driver code as a base I put together a mouse driver that doesn't have that filtering and supports the above mentioned games. If anyone knows of any more games that use 3D Realms external driver hook message me so I can support it please!

>I've tested it only using DOSBox, however there shouldn't be a reason why it wouldn't work under a normal DOS environment.

>I released v0.4 a while ago but it was pretty broken since it wouldn't parse command line parameters through the the game executable. Now it does and as a bonus supports a bunch more games. You can now have the fixed mouselook in multiplayer!

I'm actually kind of interested in this. Did mouselook suck back then too, or is this a problem of DOS mouse drivers / dosbox - modern windows mouse driver incompatibility / something else?

I'm a bit of a purist when it comes to my first playthrough for these games, so I will endure the shitty mouselook if it was like that when it came out in 199X.

Any oldfags that can give us the history behind mouselook and how it felt way back when?

But it's interesting, isn't it? People beat these games - probably even on the hardest difficulties - using shitty mouselook. If you're interested in the games from a larger historical perspective, it's probably worth doing.

I wouldn't recommend it at all though. It's the kind of thing you do after you've established that you're going to play through the game.

Press the mod's drop weapon key once (should be GZDoom's 'zoom' function renamed), then press alt-fire (straight-forward). Pretty anything that's not a basic without mods can be disassembled.

Truly a mod where extra mouse bindings come in handy.

>> No.3511702

Check the 'Customize Controls' menu. Make sure you have a key bound to 'Drop Weapon'. When playing as the Techie, dropping weapons gives you the option of breaking it down to a modpack. Or it might just replace the drop entirely? It's been a while since I played as Techie, and I can't check right now to be sure.

>> No.3511703

>>3511690

Oh, and don't bother using ZDoom's native 'Drop Weapon' key. As >>3511698 mentioned, DRLA uses ZDoom's native 'Zoom' key but renames it in the menu.
Because of the way DRLA's weapons have to be coded, things will go wrong if you use the native 'Drop Weapon' key.

First step to do when G/ZDoom shits out with an error is to try again with a dev build.

http://devbuilds.drdteam.org/

However, this does not sound like an error that arose form having an out-of date build. I think Project MSX has a similar problem in modern builds nowadays.

IIRC, it's because of how old MSX is. Mag had to 'dummy' out ZDoom's crosshair so the ACS-driven dynamic crosshairs wouldn't be obscured. Try messing with ZDoom's crosshair settings to see if you can make it go away.

>> No.3511748

>>3511740

If that doesn't work, you may need to open up the mod in SLADE3 and fix it yourself, which would involve discovering what the filename of the graphic the weapon is setting as the crosshair, and then replace it in the TEXTURES lump with that uses TNT1A0, ZDoom's reserved blank graphic, as a patch.

Normally with stuff like this I make it by default go to the failure state and only jump to the proper fire states when the player has enough ammo.

So try to make your weapon check to see if they have enough ammo, rather than check to see if they DON'T have enough. Here's an example of what I did.

I believe those flags tell zdoom "This gun can be selected even if it's out of ammo, and attempting to fire the weapon when out of ammo shouldn't auto switch to another weapon."
So, ammo is optional to use the weapon. You may still need ammo to fire the weapon, but that depends on the weapon.
