Previous thread >>3471438
This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

You get sound buzz and noise when it's on bright screens. it's not proper 75 ohm, +5v is unnecessary for video transmission and is just adding more interference.

I think its the standard because its an off the shelf analog rgb interface and they make rgb scart breakout cables and scart-ypbpr transcoders. you can get your 240p argbtism fix in a few clicks instead of a few more clicks, using 2 foolproof tools and soldering ~8 pins(R,G,B,Sync,L+R audio 2x ground). and having broadcast quality interconnects to match your broadcast quality display

I've finally found something worth posting here. C1702 for $15. Hell f'ing yes.

I got it hooked up to my C64 thru the chroma-luma RCA jacks and it looks great. Is there anywhere I could buy an adapter so I could plug regular S-Video jacks into this? Or the wiring diagram if I have to make one myself?

Well I did consider that, the first words in the post were >"Unless you live in europe"

>but it's not analog anymore, we are talking about analog video.

Regardless of the type of signal being used, it doesn't change the fact that it's still one of the most ideal cable/connector for signal fidelity and professional use, which is why it's still being used over half a century later worldwide. The connectors are the same and it's still coaxial cable. The fact that the signal is analog makes it even more relevant. If you're going to have to buy special cables to connect to a professional monitor, you might as well use the same professional standard stuff, especially if there's no added cost to doing so, in my opinion.

To keep things semi related, does anyone have any experience with the cheaper <$100 HDMI to SDI interfaces? Saw a few generic ones on ebay for 30-60 from China. Since my BVM-A20F1U has no analogue A-series input card (they are impossible to find for under $500) I'm thinking of using it with upscaled content via HDMI.

Google ground loops, and star-grounding in particular. Be aware that most SCART sockets and all VGA sockets less than 20 years old will connect all the grounds together. Thus you want most ground lines connected at one end only, and a single line for ground connected at both ends. Most of the time it makes little difference though, but that's the theory. Assuming that CRT is in ok condition, at 768 x 120Hz/135Hz it won't look the same as a TN panel at 144Hz. There'll be a shitload less motion blur on the CRT, but you'll have to see how the res holds up. Might be ok.

However, going for 1024 x 100Hz might be noticeably superior to the TN panel at 144Hz, and will still give waaay less motion blur.

I know there will be less motion blur, that's why I said strobing is a huge advantage for the CRT. But feel-wise, as in, input lag, it should be about on par at a slightly lower refresh rate. CRT does not have any inherent input lag except for the delay between frames. So a higher refresh rate TN has a few miliseconds advantage due to less time between each refresh, but also a few miliseconds of delay due to processing. So it should feel about the same as a slightly lower refresh rate CRT.

On the down side for the TN, it's going to be very blurry because it doesn't strobe. And the LCDs that do strobe come with a whole bag of problems, even if they have very well implemented strobing like the BenQ XLs do.

>However, going for 1024 x 100Hz might be noticeably superior to the TN panel at 144Hz, and will still give waaay less motion blur.

>1080p at ~95Hz will probably still be better.

I don't know about that. At that point, there's a significantly higher delay between frames. It will still look a lot sharper in motion, but there could be more of a sense of input delay and worse cursor feel.

I got my PVM-2030 back from the shop where I asked them to adjust the colours and geometry. I tried it myself before this but did not have the time to dedicate to making all the alterations and corrections. They said it was done a few weeks ago, but it wasn't so I asked them to try again. They called me a few days ago and when I went to check it it looked even worse. When I said this the shop owner started getting pissy and basically said this is as good as they can do and I have to take it. Or I can try to send it to Sony and give them $1000 to try it out, if they even service these anymore. I just accepted that this store did their best and took it home. I looked online and there is another store not too far from where I live that, according to their site, works on Trinitron monitors. I'm going to give them a call and see what they can do to fix this thing.

I should also mention that it was a freebie, and I gave that Mom and Pop shop $30 to take a crack at it so a little bit more out of pocket isn't going to upset me.

Pic related is "as good as it gets". Looks like dogshit to me.

different consoles send out different timings which will cause the image to vary. on my newer sets I just adjust HPOS/VPOS/HSIZE/VSIZE per console through the service menu (enter + degauss).

The offsets are mostly only noticeable if you have extra space at the edges of the screen. You probably didn't notice this as a kid since consumer sets zoom way the fuck in.

Either way it is a CRT and they were asking for information on it, it can be inferred, with the intention to use it for retro gaming. So thread appropriate.

>>3504229

Some cursory googling got me this
http://www.cnet.com/products/philips-30pw8402-30-crt-tv-series/specs/
It says it has a 4:3 mode but a lot of HDCRT's say that whether they really do or not.

It'll add some noticeable lag through the upscaling and will round out the image considerably. For 5th (or 6th) Gen it wouldn't look horrible but probably wouldn't give you an experience you'd like.

I'd personally avoid it unless you really reeeeally wan't to run a 7th or 8th Gen on a CRT but it is not really worth it.

WARNING: THESE THINGS ARE FUCKING HEAVY!!!!!

I cannot stress this enough. 30 inch and higher HD CRT's are an absolute fucking pain to move they are massive depth wise as well as being wide (naturally). They usually clock in well over a hundred pounds and as any TV are not exactly easy on the hands when carried.

Personally I'd avoid it.

If you are looking to pick up a larger CRT and avoid the prices on Trinitrons or shipping a larger unit. Look for a TV Locally (I like Salvation Army they seem to be the only ones not just plain throwing out CRTs now. RCA's are pretty decent (but can have some color issues that can be fixed, sometimes.), TruFlats offer a pretty nice pictures honestly. Late model (2000- ) Toshiba CRT's are really really nice and are pretty common in thrift stores honestly. They tend to have less problems with them due to the fact they didn't get used long before they were replaced with flatscreens.

Hope I've helped.

Maybe if you compare a 2004 LCD to a HD CRT.
There's no real difference if you use a PS3 what runs 30FPS games with a proper newer HD LCD TV, the CRT does not actually give you any advantage, they are not even that detailed in HD VS real HD LCDs.

I agree it's probably a better shot with something like a PS2 where CRT distortion actually improves the picture.

i don't know the exact layout of your monitor but i guess you don't have two sync inputs but rather one input and one output. And even if you have two inputs they should not support RGBHV, these are just two individual sync inputs and only one of them works for RGB. Your monitor should need RGBS instead of the RGBHV your VGA card puts out. Please try to combine the H and V sync cables and but both together in the one EXT SYNC input like it's described here:

At least with Sony sets, they're better than a large number of LCD TVs and even some monitors so long as they're displaying a 31khz+ signal. A lot of those tests for LCDs monitors are for 1080p/their max resolution, so it could even turn out to have less when considering the scaling the monitor will need to do.

And again, at least for Sony sets, if you feed them 480p, that's what you're going to get usually(depends on DRC settings). For 15khz and 720p, all bets are off though.

I checked up on a video of someone's custom RGB cable for Genesis used on a VGA monitor. The picture was extra bright, and they solved it through adding some resistors/caps. I also saw the link providing the internals needed for Nintendo cables earlier (http://www.gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id=av:nintendomultiav)) and they say the same internals are required for an RGB cable. I need to add those to my custom RGB cables, right? Otherwise picture will be too bright?

I have a tv with only a coaxle input thingy. Is it worth keeping or should I just toss it?

>> No.3509280

Coaxial is the worst quality you can pump out of any console. Might be worth keeping if you just wanna play some NES but past that composites considered the lowest common denominator to the point of coaxial usually not even getting brought up. For anything past NES, you might as well shove all the hard work making the games look good out the window. If it's Sony brand it might be worth it, but just hold onto it until you find a composite TV at least.

HDMI to HD-SDI is digital to digital. Aja, Blackmagic, Decimator and a lot of other manufacturers make converter boxes of varying size, cost and features. My workplace uses mostly Aja. I haven't checked the amount of latency any of our little boxes produce.

I'm not sure any of the popular production or broadcast CRT monitors were compatible with HD-SDI anyhow. Think they top out with good old regular SDI. I could very well be wrong though.

Correct. It used a monochrome tube - for maximum res cause no aperture grille or shadow mask - and did three stacked exposures for RGB.
