SMB2 seems to be considered among the easier Marios, but I actually find it the hardest. I wonder if it just has to do with your play style; i find this game significantly more difficult than 1 and 3, becuase in those games it seems memorization serves you better. In 2, I feel like you need better dexterity and the ability to adjust to the situation.

Pic related is something I still have incredible difficulty with, after all these years. I just can't get it. Digging in the sand with the shy guys, the ones shooting bullets..its a nightmare. And whenever I grab a key, it makes me incredibly nervous when the masks chase me. I know Toad is best for digging but even then I struggle (and I like to do everything as Mario).

So...thoughts on Mario 2?

It's incredibly difficult if you play with Luigi or the princess. Yes, the princess. She's a good character if you want to minimize deaths to bottomless pits, but she takes forever to dig and pick up objects. This forces you to synchronize your movements to avoid the jabs of the shy guy or THE MASK.
As for Luigi, I don't know. I can't get around with him. As a kid I enjoyed playing with Luigi because I liked how he jumped. Then I got to the latter levels and it became a literal hell.

I'm surprised you find it most difficult with those two, especially the princess. I always thought it was easiest with her since you can not only skip most of the platforming elements but sometimes the levels themselves. She's almost the equivalent of using the cape in SMW.

Toad is hard mode. Luigi you can skip whole sections and get to level skips easier.

SMB2 is definitely more strategic than the other Mario games. It really helps to know which character is best for which level.

For example, on those sand levels, Mario is good but Toad rocks. Just remember:

>dig extra holes and let the shyguys fall into them
>the sniffits jump as they shoot bullets, so if you dig fast, you just go past each other
>pluck the cherries; getting a starman helps here (it can even kill phanto)
>When you grab the key, phanto starts chasing you; he goes away if you drop the key
>On the sand levels, it's super easy: when you get the key, throw it onto the sand layer above your head and then crouch and jump under the key; keep doing this and you'll push the key up without ever having to lift it and trigger phanto coming after you

The game you are talking about is called Super Mario USA. What kind of idiot still calls it Super Mario Bros. 2, in 2016? Do you also call Final Fantasy 4 Final Fantasy 2, and 6 3? You were lied to, but the Internet is widespread enough now that you should use the correct names.

>> No.3505753

I find this game very easy. Even some newer Mario games like 3D World have more of a challenge than SMB2US to me. It might be because I've beaten it several times before though. The last few levels be a nightmare if you don't know where to go, but once you know where to go there's very little danger other than the Birdo.

>She's almost the equivalent of using the cape in SMW.

Totally disagree. She only stays a few seconds in the air, while the cape can be exploited to keep you flying without ever going down. Her skill only helps on horizontal segments (when precision isn't a requirement) and the game is full of vertical rooms. Also, it barely has any difficult (horizontal) platforming elements anyway, except for World 4. The main challenge of the game comes from the underground / indoor levels.

>> No.3506062

>>3504230
It's easy if you pick the princess since she can fly over most obstacles, namely those waterfalls which can get crazy later on. She picks up stuff slowly so just make sure you're in the clear. With anyone who you have to time your jumps correctly with it would be significantly harder.

The birdo fights are so easy though. When you're the princess you can just hover in one place until it shoots an egg. Even when you have to use blocks the fights are trivial, as you can easily evade the fire balls or find a safe haven and wait to attack.

Bring able to pick up things quick is helpful yes, but it's even easier to just jump and hover over everything

>>3505790
You can call it that or SMB2U if you want, at least that makes it clear you aren't talking about Super Mario Bros. 2. It is pretty funny to see people claim that Super Mario Bros. 2 is not a "true" sequel for being a so-called "ROM hack" when Super Mario USA is far closer to being one. The decision to use Mario characters was made purely to sell more by using recognizable characters despite the game having nothing to do with Mario besides being a side-scrolling platformer produced by Miyamoto, which isn't saying much considering he actually directed and designed Super Mario Bros. 2 along with Tezuka. SMB2 didn't get released in the West because Americans suck at video games. For some reason nostalgiafags or idiots still don't understand that.

Is that what delusional Americans believe? It's because it was deemed too hard for casual Westerners. Super Mario Bros. 2 isn't very similar to the first game, it looks different visually despite using the same engine, and gameplay-wise it is much more advanced than the first game (in terms of level design), and introduces new mechanics.

The levels are longer, and it also feels easier to make a mistake. There's more "trial and error" moments, a lot of them related to not being able to see below or above you.

So it makes it very tedious, because when you lose all your lives you start the world over again. It's especially annoying when the third level is the tough one, so you have to keep playing through the first two.

SMB2 was an amazing game when it was released here in the states. Graphically it was leagues ahead of Mario 1 and many video games of its era. It had an amazing soundtrack, fun level design, the option to pick different characters, many things that weren't really normal for platformers of the time.

To this day it still holds a place dear to my heart, it is a wonderful game. The All-Stars version was better because you could change characters more often. Going into a level with toad and realizing that it requires luigi or Princess to not be insanely difficult was a bitch.

It's not like other Mario games. You're going to have an outright advantage in 1, 3 world, and 2jp/lost levels if you played any one the other ones. I was good at 3 immediately cause I was really comfortable with how 1 played. 2us doesn't play anything like the other games, if nothing else your main attack strategy is completely different.

If you play through and beat the similar ones then try to play 2us sight unseen you're going to step into it and be completely out of your comfort zone.

It's not necessarily harder, just will have a different adjustment time. That being said, it's comparing apples and oranges, like comparing contra to defender. Not only that, but difficulty is somewhat subjective, especially in comparisons.

I'll keep calling it SMB2 because it's what it was called on my Super Mario All Stars cart, and because Lost Levels was a trash romhack tier game with stupid edited levels, that was only released in japan exclusively on a failed floppy disc expansion (literally the Famicoms equivalent of the Sega CD).

>> No.3507073

Sure, while Super Mario USA was only released in 1992, which is 6 years after Super Mario Bros. 2, 5 years after Doki Doki Panic, and 4 years after the game's release in the West. Doesn't sound like they gave much of a shit about THAT ROM hack, did they.

By the way, other Famicom Disk System exclusives include Metroid, Hikari Shinwa (Kid Icarus) and the Famicom Tantei Club series. Akumajou Dracula (Castlevania) was also exclusive to it until 1993 (2 years after the release of the Super Famicom title Akumajou Dracula, or Super Castlevania 4). And Zelda no Densetsu (The Legend of Zelda) was exclusive to it until 1994 (3 years after the release of Kamigami no Triforce, or A Link to the Past).

FDS sales represented over 20% of Famicom sales in Japan, over 4 million units (4.4 million on Wikipedia but this is uncited; Nintendo just says over 4 million). In comparison, the Famicom sold 19.35 million units in Japan. Game sales exceeded 50 million (53.39 million). This is successful. Maybe it makes you angry to think that "your" trashy ROM hack isn't really a Mario game, but you'll have to face the truth.

The game is maybe difficult if you play it with a single character, but Toad/Princess combo can easily beat the whole game with little difficulty. Luigi takes a lot of skill to play well, but he can literally skip entire parts of the game.
Mario is okay but he has nothing much really going for him, if you don't need the princess or Luigi's gimmicks, you're probably better off using Toad.
