How do you play Uncharted Waters? Is it like Pirates! and you try to set your own goals as you cruise around?

Pretty much. You can trade, explore, or be a pirate/privateer. The first game is a little more free form and there's not much hand-holding, the second game has six different characters with stories and game styles of their own. But you can kind of still just do whatever you want.

Lord of Darkness for the SNES, Iron Triangle for the PS2 and Sphere of Influence for the PC are the best Nobunaga games IMO.

IIRC there's a problem with the UW2 controls on DOS; on land, the character stops and you have to press the button twice for him to change walking directions, which is a bit of a pain. Can be fixed by just using the mouse, tho, even if it's a bit unwieldy at first.

The dungeons are a hell of a drag for sure, I really need to check to see if there's a guide to power-level in Inindo, because your "safe" while doing dungeon training but the moment you exit training grounds or go to an inn you'll have bounty hunters or fuma ninja rolling up your ass.

Was lots of fun just doing dumb shit like randomly sabotaging armies for no reason.
Also took great pleasure in trying to find the way to trigger the nobunaga getting burned event at the beginning.

The La Reale is probably the best exploration ship in the game, second to maybe the Atakebune. 40 men = 30 on navigaton, 10 on lookout. You go full speed and spot anything within viewing distance. The oars help you when the wind's working against you.

Eh, for the controls all you really have to do is get used to doing everything with the mouse. Except maybe press enter to confirm a prompt you already know by heart. Walking is just a matter of nudging the mouse in the direction you wanna go and sailing is just pointing the mouse at the 8 cardinal points on the map (not the wheel at the bottom right) and clicking the center of the map if you want auto sail. Also, if you click while pointing a direction in sail mode, it goes into turbo for some reason which is pretty nifty. And of course, right clicking to pause the game and access the menus.

Bump, still setting up those UW2 ship tests. I'll post more later.

The other poster used Suva, but I chose Valparaiso because of its closeness to the bottom of the map and setting up a straight sailing path.

The route.

La Reale is easy to get by investing in French ports. 100 speed and 95 turning, oared. Can sail for up to 70 days with minimum crew (30) and no guns. It took 54 days to circumnavigate.

The Sloop is easy to get by investing in Northern European ports. 85 speed and 95 turning, sails only. Can sail for about 233 days with minimum crew (5) and no guns. It took 54 days to circumnavigate.

The Atakebune is not so easy to get by investing in Japanese ports (which João and Ernst may not be able to access w/o story access first). 55 speed and 95 turning, oared. Can sail for about 120 days with minimum crew (20) and no guns. It took 54 days to circumnavigate. I'm seeing a pattern here.

TL;DR: I'm an autist. Also the La Reale and Sloops are the real winners here. The Atakebune isn't as strong as I remembered it and not really worth the trouble. You may as well get a Tekkousen for the trouble it takes to build up Japanese ports.

I still think the La Reale is better for journeys where you might run into wind problems, but the Sloop has incredible range so there's that.

Lord of Darkness is a good starting point. Buy grain low, sell high. Play as Nobunaga in the first scenario and develop your land until 1560 when Imagawa tries to attack. You beat him for free and get a free alliance, then the fun can begin.

I liked the idea of the traveling merchants from different parts of the world very much, i liked how merchants of different cultures have different values for goods and how each country can only produce goods that are pertinent to it's culture and historically accurate.

Uncharted Waters still manages to amaze me sometimes.
Both by how expansive and full of stuff to do it was for its time, and also by how relatively unknown it manages to keep on being.
Like, "it's the age of navigations! The world is your sandbox, be a pirate, trader, explorer, whatever, just do whatever you want!" is the kind of stuff that nowadays would get kickstarted to fame in seconds.

How did you guys first get into Koei games? A friend of mine rented RotK III one weekend and told me to come over and try it. It took me awhile to get it but when it finally clicked, I was hooked. I ended up learning a lot more through those games about China than they had ever bothered teaching in schools here.
