they censored the names of alcohol. people still got drunk. if you were a kid with half a functioning brain, who didn't live in some ultra sheltered existence, you knew what a drunk person looked like. In Final Fantasy 6, it didn't take much to figure out that all the trouble Locke went through to get some cider for that old man was because it wasn't actually cider.

and, yeah, Nintendo censoring church iconography was weird. especially in the Castlevania games. they gave that shit up by the Playstation. by that point, the plot of every other JRPG was "religion is a tool for oppressing the masses. final boss is God."

Hell, the final boss of FF6 was Kefka-as-God. all that censorship was just lip service to the Religious Right. The content still made it through.
