I still remember the elementary school days where I just moved to a new school district, and I met one of my best friends to this day from smash64

He was an extroverted popular kid who was self proclaimed the best at vidya, especially smash. That was all the rage where I moved to, all the boys and even a few girls played it nonstop.

We had assigned seats next to each other since both our names were close in the alphabet. I told him I was pretty good at smash after overhearing him at recess, so he came over that afternoon and I was able to beat his capt falcon with my Luigi. It was close but he was blown away since he was considered #1 at school.

After that we became close friends and we won any 2v2s that were thrown at us, even the middle schoolers. He helped me open up, make new friends, even got my first gf in the 5th grade because he was a true bro who wingmaned the shit outta me at the playground

We still keep close even though hes stationed in Seoul, but smash64 will always be a game I love because the things that came to be from it

I became a competitive player going to tournaments for a few years and can easily pull off 0 to death combos with most characters but it all started many years before that in 1st grade (im 23 now) when I was first shown the game by a Britizh kid in my class. The brit kid would play Kirby and we all thought he was a god because he would always come back to the stage by jumping, which was OP as fuck.

Another thing I remember was no one using shields because it was for "pros only". Obviously this was just because we were complete trash and it was too hard for us to use but ironically when you get to high levels of play the shield is actually very rarely used as amongst other things Z canceling which removes ALL lag from aerials means your shield getting hit still leaves a frame advantage for your opponent where he can keep getting more hits or simply a grab in during your shield stun.

Pretty much, although we didn't limit stages, Hyrule Castle was the best, and my main was Link and so was my other "rival" buddy's. I was blue Link and he was red Link. The classic sudden matches were me vs him on timed 4vs4, and when we played together the other kids didn't stand a chance, kind of like >>3492641's story.
