What are the 10 most influential games from AMERICA? I've come up with this list of 9 (in no particular order).

PONG
Wolfenstein 3D
Doom
Mortal Kombat
Wizardry
Ultima IV
Ultima Online
World of Warcraft
Wing Commander

Trying to figure out the most influential RTS game is kind of an impossible task.

Dune 2 was the first one that resembles what RTS games are today, but nobody played it.

Warcraft 2 and C&C were the first RTS games that weren't a pain in the ass to play, and both were responsible for catapulting the RTS genre into the mainstream. Which one was more influential?

Starcraft was the pinnacle of the genre, somehow managed to be even more popular than Warcraft 2, was the first big online RTS, and the map editor's scriptability laid the foundation that expanded upon in warcraft 3, which gave rise to DotA. But was it too late to be considered influential...after all, it's a mere refinement of the already great and popular Warcraft 2 formula, like Quake was to Doom.

Damn...

Ultima and Wizardry are basically the roots of just about every JRPG and WRPG. More so Wizardry with JRPGs though.

Wolfenstein was not nearly as influential as Doom so Doom takes the title as the FPS that influenced every other FPS for decades to come, and you can cross Wolfenstein off that list.

Wing Commander really didn't influence as much as many think given that Elite was before it. Elite shouldn't be on that list because it's a British game, but it's far more influential.

World of Warcraft isn't even retro.

Pong didn't really influence much directly outside of Pong clones and selling Ataris. Pitfall should be on there instead for inspiring the entire concept of console sidescrollers.

>> No.3478615

>>3478608
Oh also I forgot to add: Mortal Kombat only inspired waves of forgotten Mortal Kombat clones. Just about every other fighting game didn't take anything from it.

Just about every Lucasarts game should be on that list, but Monkey Island would definitely the most famous and most influential.

Still saying Dune II, because of the same developer deal. If Dune II and C&C had been developed by different companies, then one could say that the C&C dev came up with their stuff without being influenced.

It's somewhat similar to Wolf3D and Doom both being on the same list: Wolf3D basically defined the modern FPS, while Doom popularized it without really changing the formula; Doom, however, also made huge advancements in 3D environments, ease of modding, and network multiplayer such that those achievements alone earn it a top-10 spot.
