DRAGON QUEST VII: FRAGMENTS OF THE FORGOTTEN PAST IS COMING OUT ON SEPTEMBER 16TH! BUY IT IF YOU WANT TO SUPPORT DRAGON QUEST IN THE WEST!

Celebrating the release of the Dragon Quest VII remake, it's Dragon Quest Thread!
Previous thread: >>3459478

FAQ:

>What is Dragon Quest?
A classic turn-based JRPG that is incredibly popular in Japan, though not so much in the west. It was created by Yuji Horii, has been ongoing for more than 30 years, and is approaching eleven mainline games with a lot of spinoff games such as the Dragon Quest Monsters, Mystery Dungeon, Rocket Slime, and Dragon Quest Heroes series. Dragon Quest I-III and IV-VI are very loosely connected trilogies, but you don't have to play them in order to enjoy them. VII and beyond are all completely independent games.

>Why do all the characters look like they came from Dragon Ball Z?
Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball, is the character and monster designer for Dragon Quest.

>Where do I get started in the series?
You could start chronologically or you could start anywhere in the series. Generally, III, V, and VIII are your best bet for newcomers though. If you want to know what the best version of each of them is, or if you'd like more information on other games in the series, just ask the thread.

>What is the next Dragon Quest coming out in the west?
Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past for Nintendo 3DS on September 16th for both North America and Europe. Also, the 3DS remake of Dragon Quest VIII is scheduled for 2017.

>Can we discuss Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past in this thread?
Absolutely, along with any other modern Dragon Quest games. Although Dragon Quest VII is technically a retro game, if you are discussing the game, please make sure to mark spoilers.

>What should I know about Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past before I dive in?
The main story of Dragon Quest VII is easily over 100 hours long. This game will definitely keep you busy!

>> No.3487904

>The main story of Dragon Quest VII
Since when does Dragon Quest VII have a main story?
As far as I remember every single Island had it's own story completely unrelated to each other.

I put 5 bucks down at the game store. Really looking forward to playing DQVII.

I rented the PSX version around when it came out, but I think I was 10 or 11 at the time and it just flew right over my head. I don't think I got very far at all. A couple years ago before the 3DS version came out in Japan, I played it on emulator and grinding with keyboard controls became so insufferable I ended up cheating to get to the end. So, it'll be good to finally play it, or something like it, legitimately.

I - IV on NES
I - III on SNES

I'm not sure how far along Playstation Emulation is on 3DS just yet, but you might also have IV and VII available via that as well.

As for where to start, III or IV would be good choices.

Judging from Dragon Quest IX which basically has the same system? Waaaay easier. But I haven't looked that much into the remake yet since I don't want to spoil anything new for myself, so I don't know too much about the new post-game content.

>Kitase: Horii is extremely talented. He has an incredible way with words. He would check the dialogue of NPCs in towns, for instance, and just from those revisions alone you could get a strong sense of the “Horii style.” (laughs) He’d bring a lot of personality out of the dialogue just by tweaking one or two words.

>The thing about Horii, though, is that he tends to ignore the memory limitations we’re working under in favor of dialogue. But as developers that concern is foremost in our minds: don’t use up all the memory!

If it helps, the remake is a lot easier to complete.

I mean, the main story is still 130 hours tops, but if you are a completionist, 180 hours are enough to get everything in the remake.
Compared to the original, where you needed at least 450 hours to max everything.

>> No.3490163

>Max everything
I don't see how anyone can enjoy maxing every class with every character. Doesn't that make them too similar to each other.

Aira is the only party member who should learn SwordDance, IMO. It makes perfect sense. I'd never pull a HCBailly and have everyone learn it just because it's good.

Why the change in completionist hours exactly?

>> No.3490391

SwordDance doesn't take long to learn.
Maxing the Warrior class is already required to get the Godhand class (the class with the best stats) and after maxing the Warrior class you only need like 50 extra battles in the Dancer class to get SwordDance.

Make Gabo a Teen Idol for HustleDance and then have everyone learn SwordDance and then become a Godhand. Shit like the monster classes are only there to waste your time and should be avoided.

Should I preorder this? Never played a DQ game in my life, and while I've never been a huge FF fan, I did like the leveling system of 2 and I appreciated the stories of some that I finished. If I do play RPG's they're usually dungeon crawlers and/or roguelikes.

Alternately, I'm tempted to go full casual and get Rune Factory IV since I haven't played an animal crossing like game in ages. I would get the Remake of Etrian Odyssey 2, but I haven't finished Millennium Grill yet.

I really don't understand what people like in this series it's one of the most dreadful uninspired and boring jrpgs ever made. If your typical jrpg is full of cliches then I don't have the words how to describe what is going on in DQ. The series has 20+ years but it's battle system still is as dreadful and boring as ever. I don't understand is copying macros from PSIV so hard to do it's no SMTIII with it's punishing press turn so even minimal thinking isn't required to grind through the painful battles in it. Please tell me this series relies on nostalgia to sell in japan. It's mind numbing how something so rehashed(at least FF went some places and experimented) can still exist.

I didn't even know there were multiple translations, but the version I played has a bug near the end caused by the Prince of Cannock's name being too long. Toriyama was meant to be a mechanics artist and general robot designer.

Everything mechanic he draws, from motorcycles over guns to spaceships looks fantastic.

His monsters, and in particular his lizards, reptiles and dragons are a close second.

His humans are extremely limited.

If it's still him doing designs these days and not one of his assistants then he's another artist whose art has been ruined by photoshop, like Masamune Shirow's. His copic art was leagues better and more charming.

Yes, I just found a Club inside a cave and it's great, I'm doing 9+ damage on everything.

Just a question though, since you can always "search under your feet" does that mean this game has invisible loot on patches of grass or something?

Seriously, keep save states. I had my saves get fucked and several crashes in the SNES version not even related to the menus with the translation patch.

For the most part, in containers. If the game wants you to search for something on the ground, you'll probably get a hint for it first. That's not specific to this game, just Dragon Quest in general. It's pretty rare for important items to just be on the ground outside of 2, which does give hints to everything even if they're vague as fuck.

For instance, you'll never hear the real overworld themes unless you stand still for a while like an idiot. If you just play normally, the intro will still be playing by the time you reach the next town. It's retarded.

I'm done with this series. VII was the last great one. Horii lost my respect when he started dumbing down the remakes. What they did to the ruins in this one is a disgrace. The SNES remakes are improvements over the NES games in almost every way. Improvements to the system, extra content, and it looks better. People often recommend the GBC ports because they have all the content of the SNES game and while they don't look quite as good, they were officially translated and released in the west.

If you put aside the issues some people have the the localization, the DS remakes are also much improved over the originals.

If you are only planning to play through a particular game only once, most people will tell you to play the best version, which for the DQ series at least is usually the most recent remake. But if you want to play the original version or play all the versions, no one here is going to tell you not to.

>> No.3504930

>Extra content

That's half my beef with the new versions. Minimedals and casinos are boring as shit. I've yet to see a JRPG remade with additional content that I give a shit about, save for a few International Version releases. It's like records that are rereleased with bonus tracks, almost all of which are demos/b-sides/archives/live cuts, and which may be interesting, but which were either left off for a reason or don't fit contextually with the rest of the album.

I find the SFC and DS art style and graphics really ugly. I much prefer the chunky pixel look of the NES games, which is a bit of a bummer, since I'd like to play through V and VI. FFIV and DQV have to be two of the ugliest SNES games. Much less appealing than FFIII or DQIII/IV.

>The SNES remakes are improvements over the NES games in almost every way
I much prefer the original version's music and aesthetic. And remakes make it a casual joke instead of providing the challenge, tension and strategy of the original.

But really, if slightly higher definition graphics are a reason to play a remake when you claim to want to play the games "as intended", I don't know what you're doing on /vr/. Then again, I don't know what this thread is doing on /vr/, it's /vg/ material.

I don't understand why people have a problem with first person battles.

In DQ games, you see the battles from the perspective of the characters. Outside battle, you see EVERYONE in your party. It doesn't feel lonely.

In games like FF, you see your characters in battle and see them doing all that cool stuff, but it feels less... personal. It's like your character is someone else. Outside battle, you only see the lead character. That's something I've always hated about those games. It makes me forget there are other people in the party, I feel lonely as fuck. And the way everyone comes out of your body before a cutscene is immersion-breaking.

I'll never understand why people have a problem with not seeing the characters in battle but don't mind being unable to see more than one character at the same time outside battle.

I always talk to everyone. And I do it AGAIN after every little event, because they say different things. Why aren't you doing that? Aren't you curious about what they have to say?

This game's plot becomes absolute crap if you are the kind of player that ignores half the NPCs. I don't see how such a player could enjoy any of the stories in the game.

All the worldbuilding and lore is told through NPC dialogue. You should WANT to talk to them every time something happens, instead of feeling like it's a chore that you have to do to "trigger" the next cutscene.

Seriously, those people are completely missing the point of this game.

Apparently, the coding for the PS1 DQ games is an absolute mess or something. I think someone is translating the DQ Monsters PS1 remake and they keep complaining about how hard it is.

But yeah, the main reason is lack of interest. Nobody cares about the difficulty or gameplay differences, because the DS port looks the same. Nobody will ever translate it. 3DS release is significantly easier. Additionally, the game is much more streamlined: encounters are easily avoidable on the world map, the fragment radar makes it easier, the fact that all dungeons immediately have a map makes you plow through them without any trouble, and it's just generally easier.

That said there's still plenty of extra content for you to do if you want more time in it.

Translating it as "ruff" is missing the point. "Ruff" doesn't imply that he is trying to make an animal sound but failing because he's now a human. It's just a normal sound that dogs make. And a terrible name for a character.

There are very few puns in the DQIV translation. The main problem is the accents, as you said.

The DQV and DQVI translations remove most of the town accents (a lot of important characters in DQV are given obnoxious accents, though...), but the localizers turn everything into a pun. Especially NPC and town names. It's really cringeworthy. They even ruin a lot of serious conversations by adding puns and jokes everywhere. Absolutely disgusting.

If you hate the accents, you'll probably hate the puns even more. It feels like you are playing one of those joke fan translations that make every line of dialogue "funny".

Do yourself a favor and play the SNES versions.

But I'd love to be able to use spells like bikill whenever I want or force everyone to parry just to try weird stuff with some enemies.

How much does it reduce the difficulty? I want a challenge, but not buying anything from the shops would be meaningless if the lack of AI makes the game insanely easy anyway.

What do you think about the Return/Zoom spell? It's very useful, but at the same time it trivializes the distance between towns.

I wish I could disable the spell somehow in DW3, it would be interesting. If you are in a far away land and want to visit the starting town, you'd need to travel by ship for like 10 minutes while fighting monsters. Just like in real life. It's probably tedious as hell, but it would make the game feel even more like a real adventure. Especially when you need to collect all the orbs, since in a normal playthrough you'd just warp to each town using return.

It's the interplay between the breezy but charming writing with the game design that makes it work. The three games you mentioned have some of the best sense of exploration in the series and that's part of why they work. They're tight, but don't hold your hand.

I didn't even say that I didn't like it. I just prefer the other games' format of having a giant world to explore and get lost in. With DQ7 it's just "go here, watch a scene, do this," and so on. I don't know about this version, but in the original there was a missable boss battle. If you miss it, you eventually get the reward anyway. But the monster won't be registered in your monster book and you will never get the postgame ring that prevents all random encounters everywhere.

After you get Melvin (the old man), give him some classes, grind for a while and go to the palace of Gracos in the present. By the time you get Melvin, you'll already know where it is. And you have to beat the boss at the end.

I believe you can do it as soon as you return from your last adventure in the past, but you want as many people as possible in your party. The battle becomes unavailable after completing the next three islands, I think.

Not sure if they changed it in the 3DS version but there's an optional piece of equipment you can miss out on the original. Make sure you enter the wisdom rankings in El Ciclo after it opens in the present and you've saved Wetlock. Then go talk to the bandits west of Alltrades. Make sure you get all the mini medals in one time only locations, there's like fifteen missable ones and you've an allowance of five if you want all the prizes. Gracos V can be fought whenever for your monster book entry, in the original you could miss him. Make sure you don't give Maribel any story items just in case the remakes doesn't out them in your bag.

Does anyone know if you still only get four party members after Melvin rejoins? Because that was bullshit in the original.

Playing NES DQ4, recently got to Ch. 5.

I'm really tempted to turn off the party AI with that one Game Genie code. A few simple boss fights got drawn out or simply fucked because the party was making idiotic choices.

I loved the game up to this point, and it's still very fun. But basically every boss fight turns into a crap shoot and it's consistently annoying.

Fucking why? Any one of these would work. Moving the puzzles and artifact room to opposite sides fixes the problem, as does giving you a menu/instant access to the artifact room. And if it was because the puzzle was too hard they could have just made an easy, single room puzzle.

OP here, I haven't been in this thread for a while, mainly to avoid Dragon Quest VII spoilers and such, but I hope you guys have been enjoying it. Since the last time I posted...

>I was autistic enough to grind all my party members to Hero class to beat Dark Dream in Dragon Quest VI SFC (never again). I beat him in less than 15 turns just from spamming Gigaslash over and over again for 300+ damage each. It was pretty fucking awesome desu.

>I played Dragon Quest I+II for the Game Boy Color before realizing it's literally just the same game as the SFC version with dumbed down graphics and music (still going to play Dragon Quest III GBC because of the extra bonus content though)

And now I'm playing through Dragon Quest Monsters. After playing through Joker as my first Dragon Quest Monsters game, this game is pretty hard to play through. Please tell me that the sequel doesn't have randomized dungeons.

You've got a couple more dungeons to go. One of the things that sucks about third gen is that you need to grind the kids up to your level at the beginning if you want to be able to use them, and it takes a while at least in the SFC version. Also when you get your wife back you'll also need to grind her up if you want to be able to use her for endgame too.

DQM2 has random *worlds* with procedurally-generated towns, dungeons, encounter tables and bosses, but they're entirely optional. The story-related content is all nonrandom (though the world maps have gold and consumable items randomly strewn on the ground each time you enter, instead of monsters dropping gold and items)
