Pix related are all just the same game story-wise. Graphically and mechanically, sure, 2j got some tweaks, but we're still just talking about three different difficulty levels for a game representing Mario and Luigi's first adventure in the Mushroom Kingdom. In terms of story, Super Mario Bros. 2 USA is the true sequel to Super Mario Bros.

In fact, we can even trace a certain degree of continuity for the Mario Brothers, but only through the NES games (and SMW).

>Mario is a carpenter working construction
>Comes into possession of large ape, Donkey Kong, who escapes and kidnaps his gf, Pauline
>Mario captures Donkey Kong and frees Pauline
>Donkey Kong Jr. comes looking for DK, Mario gets BTFO, decides to get out of the Evil Zookeeper biz
>Hooks up with little brother Luigi, goes into business a demolitions Wrecking Crew
>Get a job working for NYC as plumbers, cleaning up the pipes under the city
>Pipes infested with monsters—giant crabs, fighter flies, living icicles… and koopa troopas
>Pipes turn out to be a Warp Zone to the Mushroom Kingdom
>Weird gravity there gives them super powers, plus otherwordly magic and shit from power-ups
>They fight the Koopa Troop, defeat King Koopa, save the Princess
>Live in the Mushroom Kingdom as heroes for a while
>Weird dreams, picnic with Princess Toadstool and Toad, door to Subcon
>The whole Wart thing
>The gang saves Subcon, goes back, finds that Bowser & the Koopa Kids have invaded the grater Mushroom World
>SMB3, Bowser Koopa and the brood get BTFO, Doomship crashes on Dinosaur Land
>The Bros. and Princess vacation there, get into it with the Koopa Troop again

After that, also sense of continuity breaks down. Yoshi's Island, the gameboy titles, and Mario 64 all present too many contradictions to tease out a single narrative.

I subscribe to the theory that Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. are canon and everything after that is a "big fish story".

This old guy saved a damsel in distress from a giant ape and helped clean up the plague infested sewers with his brother. That alone was enough to propel him to a local legend.

Soon his name starts spreading all over the world. The ape become a mutated dragon turtle from the sewers, this Brooklyn chick became a princess and because this old fuck jumped over a piece of scaffolding thrown by the ape people are now suddenly saying he has magical jumping powers.

Mario become such a legend a play was made based off of the tales (Mario 3).

The legend keeps evolving and new stories keep being made so by the end of it "Mario" is this space traveling, dinosaur taming globe trotter.

But that's just a theory...an autistic theory!

The Mushroom Kingdom slowly starts to worship Mario so much that it becomes Mario Land (hints of this in MK8 locations), and Mario is given his own royal castle, given political power. He eventually defeats the Koopa Troop for good, and bored, ventures out for strange new lands and adventures, along the way he meets a real love interest, since Luigi was always the one who loved Peach, Mario more cared about the thrill of adventure. Mario's story is done, so now focus shifts to his greedy, weird cousin. This is the end if the Mario timline.
