There are subgenres within the shmup genre itself, so:

>R-Type
>Showed how shmup gameplay can be more than just shooting. Also: Atmosphere.
>Dodonpachi
>Introduction to the bullet hell scene. So much stuffs to shoot and see!
>EspGaluda 2
>Showed how advanced scoring systems can change the way one plays. Great replayability.
>Touhout
>Like using the first iPhone in 2007: Less is more. Reduced everything to its core. Incredibly polished in its own way.

For me it just lacks the "magic factor". Can't explain it but it seems there's something in the design of these games where shooting and moving about a bit can either be fun and absorbing or just really lame and tedious.

STG is the latter. Gradius and the like are the former. With STG I'm painfully aware that I'm sitting in a chair, holding a piece of plastic, occasionally pressing buttons. The whole point of a videogame is to make you forget this.

TF4 is bad ass but I hate how the only way to play it is memorizing it. Skills alone won't get you anywhere, and retaining your bonus weapons is nearly impossible.

I would've liked if, say, the blade and railgun weapons would've been permanent upgrades on that level where you get a booster.

I suppose it is not a surprise that I liked TFV way more, even if it was unpolished and felt unfinished (the demo version that dates back to 6 weeks before the final is just a mash-up of random enemies and uses placeholder TF4 graphics - they changed stuff around only for a little over a month compared to that, and it shows).

Mahou Daisakusen, aka Sorcer Striker (arcade only) is one of the best examples I've played recently of how to tell a story in a shmup. Not because there is loads and loads of text (there isn't), but because the way the levels are arranged, how the enemies appear, and whatnot tell a really exciting story with you as the main character.

Seirei Senshi Spriggan is somewhat similar in how it tells a story through level design, though that has short cutscenes between levels.

It is coincidental that Compile, who made MUSHA, had people who worked on both Mahou Daisakusen and Spriggan (along with MUSHA, presumably).

Also for comedy plots, no one beats Psikyo. That shit is gold. All of it.
Gunbird is also a really great-looking 2D game, as is Strikers 1945 (no real plot; just ww2 planes vs mechs).

>>3481058
Dragon Blaze is astonishing in how good it looks. While I think Psikyo ironed out the kinks in making pre-rendered look decent in Gunbird 2, Dragon Blaze is incredible to look at. I've no clue how they pulled it off.

>> No.3481795

>>3481698
Thanks, I shall check out Mahou Daisakusen and Spriggan.
I agree the right way to do story telling in shmups is through environment, you can do text and voice but dont interrupt the gameplay. if you do interrupt it better be amazingly well written then. and its pointless, just do it while the gameplay is naturally idling

Yea comedy bases shmups exist quite a few great ones. I meant more dramatic stories

I don't play a lot of shmps, but I'm rather fond of Gun Nac on the NES. It's really cute an comfy. I heard Compile, who made it, also made a bunch of other greats ones. So I'll probably try some of those some day.

Vulgus and Exed Exes are purely reaction-based (Vulgus moreso) because the random nature of enemy formations/spawns. Those two games are also excellent and very unique, especially Vulgus (I think that was capcom's first game? One of their first anyhow).

I think "good time" is misleading. It's probably one of the hardest shmups to learn because you are forced to play for score. And you aren't just holding down a fire button, you're learning how and when to use each of the weapons effectively. Also, the length? I don't see how someone can play it casually.

Some of my faves include:
- Raiden I & II
- Tyrian 2000
- Zanac
- Gun Nac
- Demonstar

I'm not really well versed in the SHMUP genre, so what else would I like?

Gradius III, arcade version. not the watered down SNES port.

It is a fantastic torture simulator, especially when Konami decided to not include an option to continue on any revision ever.

I like it for the silly engrish quotes, the music, the weapons, the bosses (Except Ultraman) and basically everything besides the difficulty.

Treasure games are ok, but they aren't a challenge, period.

Damn man.
I haven't started a file in silvergun for like four years.

I'm sure the rust is strong in me but believe me I'm good.
The game has enough depth and it's fun and pretty but it's not as demanding as any CAVE game besides of the need for a bit of patience since it's much longer than your everyday STG.
