DOOM PSX
Damn, I'd kill to get the source code of this port of Doom. The atmoshpere, the sounds, the lighting, the level geometry, everything feels so special.

So? We're only talking about atmosphere here. And Doom 64's atmosphere kicks the shit out of the PSX game.

I don't agree, Doom 64 feels really different from Doom imo. PSX Doom is just darker and more intense

How? Same composer, similar sounding tracks, and Doom 64 borrows the weapon and monster sounds from PSX Doom.

Not much of an argument considering the N64 technically counts as that also.

>> No.3477467

>>3477270
I always felt it was out of place. The only reason I'd prefer the N64 port over it is they built a new game from the ground up to match the atmosphere they were aiming for as opposed to just making some minor tweaks to the original game.

Still better than all that blur due to the sharper looking quality and texture variety.

>and Metal Gear soild
Is that even an insult? Even MGS' models look better than the likes of things like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, with the latter looking even dated for its time.

>Ff7 ugly models.
Still better looking than the likes of Quest 64's models by far.

Why would you need the source code for the assets of a port?

>> No.3477842

Very silly thing to say. Doom 64's mapset is very consistent in quality.

>>3477270
I understand liking the sounds and music, but the geometry is just simplified PC layouts (how is that better?) and the lighting is that janky faked color stuff.

And as someone else said, you can get wads that replicate most of that stuff, so it's kind of silly to want a "source port" of it.

It literally was if you ran it on a PC with """"""""""""minimum"""""""""""" specification as written on the box

t. somebody who actually did

I can tell you Perfect Dark was buttery smooth in comparison

DX is notoriously CPU heavy. It was literally impossible to run the game at 60fps before 2002 because there just weren't CPUs fast enough until then.

>> No.3479158

>>3479147
I don't know what toaster you ran it on but I did just fine on a PIII, 256 of RAM and a Voodoo 4. By fine I mean no slowdown and maxed out graphics.

Anyway the point is you on the N64, you have no options. You couldn't have picked a worse comparison.

>> No.3479165

>>3479158
I ran it on a Pentium II 300mhz, 64 MB RAM and a Voodoo 2. The performance was pretty fucking shocking. Yes, N64 shooters were smoother, I even remember thinking that.

>PIII, 256 of RAM and a Voodoo 4. By fine I mean no slowdown and maxed out graphics.

Not even possible. I've assembled a retro box with a P3-S 1.4 ghz, Voodoo 5 and 512 MB of RAM, did some time demos and got about ~50 FPS.

Of course it's 60 or above in interiors, but exteriors really kills the FPS.

Supposedly the Japanese version runs better, but this should give you an idea of how bad it can get.
