Now that the dust have settled, can we all agree that SEGA has better music than Nintendo?

Not only did Michael Jackson *definitely* make the music to Sonic 3, but you got games under the SEGA banner with fantastic music like:

Streets of Rage
Outrun
Space Channel 5
Jet Set Radio
Shinobi 3
Phantasy Star

Nintendo has, I don't know... Splatoon? That's a pretty good soundtrack, kinda.

>> No.3476484

Yeah Sega's music is really great almost always.

But Nintendo also has cool stuff, I dig soundtracks like F-Zero, Zelda, Metroid or Mother.

Is this just another Nintendo vs Sega thread? We already have this one >>3466396

Some lesser known/underrated Sega and Nintendo music I like

If we are talking about in-house sound teams then yeah SEGA is definitely better. Their music tried to be more complex but because of that was less catchy then what nintendo did. If we talk about what they offer today then sega is on top simply because of the fact that ninendo still hasn't evolved beyond what it did in the 90s. Also sega did vocals better than nintendo will ever do.

Like he said before, it's a cover (of a YMO song). Just listen to the original instead.

I like Nintendo's music better. Not to say Sega's is bad, though.

Except for Sonic 3, none of the games you mentioned compares to Chrono Trigger, Donkey Kong Country, F-Zero, Mega Man X, Zelda, Metroid, Final Fantasy, etc.

Anyway, how many threads do Sega fans need to create to reassure themselves about their special little things? Every four days or so someone has to create one of these "PLEASE, TELL ME SEGA BEATS NINTENDO PLEASE" threads. It's becoming ridiculous.

Nah even though its simple yes, it's also for the most part catchy and memorable; sometimes even bordering on atmospheric and/or experimental at times. Sega in comparison, is just generic 80's/90's prog. rock/J-pop crap that's truly just forgettable, and for the most part not even the good kind either.

Hip Tanaka's stuff (Mother 1&2, Metroid, Balloon Fight, Super Mario Land, Game Boy Camera, tons of others) was always fantastic for sure. He's a big inspiration for me and he's still making great original stuff even though he doesn't work at Nintendo anymore. He contributed a remix of Pac-Man's theme to Smash Bros 4 though. Definitely Nintendo's most stylish musician, but SEGA's got Ninty beat overall.

I was just gonna say this man. The SNES used sound samples like a "musician" uses one of those dealies with the buttons, where each button can have a pre-recorded sound on it.

Sure the GEMS driver was mostly ass, but not every game used it. Most third party developers actually created their own, and others might have used the SMPS 68k or Z80.

But listen to this shit right here.

This isn't an exclusive to the genny, but rather a port, that has been ported many times. It was developed by Tengen, which eventually became Time Warner Interactive. The same fucks who made Batman Returns and Rise of the Motherfucking Robots.

There is no reason that the soundtrack has to be anything but GEMS garbage. And yet I consider it ear candy.

Then you have Columns III.

Thank you.
I'm tired of this "GEMS sounded bad, SMPS was better" meme coming from people who obviously never tried to program a FM synth in their life.
Tommy Tallarico used GEMS, and said it was a neat little system because he could edit the sounds with his PC and compose everything with a MIDI sequencer. (source : http://www.sega-16.com/2005/06/interview-tommy-tallarico/))
It seems way better to make music that way than to have to program everything with a custom scripting language, like Yuzo Koshiro did (and I respect him a lot for that).
If you don't believe me, download Deflemask (or any DAW + YM2612 VST / FMDRIVE / VOPM), and try to make a nice sounding track without relying on any preprogrammed synth patches.

True. Look up Vopm which is a YM2151 vst. The problem I see MJ probably had with the Genesis sound was its drum samples. It was pretty weak at playing samples because they had to be heavily compressed to save space so samples on Genesis usually sound shitty. However FM was great.
