That's not a source. I've never heard this elsewhere, and the impression that I always got from reading about DNF's development was the product that Gearbox eventually got didn't resemble the original game at all due to the extended development time, and that the final game is just simply Gearbox and some other developer I forget the name of that was formed from the ashes of 3D Realms cobbling together what they could into a finished game.

This is more complicated than that.

For DNF, a small team was working on the game already, from their home, with no publisher, when Gearbox came in. It's true that a lot of content was cut and stitched together, but there is no telling if Gearbox was the cause of that.

In any case, many things about DNF, from the 2 weapons limit to the linearility, was there already before all that, it was 3Drealms decision because XBOX360 was the main market.

As for Shadow Warrior, I don't believe Devolver owns the IP. I think they just have licences for Redux, the reboot, and 2, but I could be wrong. Last I heard a small company made by G. Broussard and S.Miller had the rights, but it could be old news.

You seem to be confusing owning the IP and having the rights to make a game; as well as confusing the situation with Gearbox and 3DRealms.

In any case, SW and ROTT didn't "escape" anything, because the war going on between Gearbox and 3Drealms was always about Duke Nukem, and Duke Nukem only. There is no reason for other games to be involved.

I believe what most people don't get is how we're also way past the simplicity of stuff like doombuilder, projects involving mapping and modding oftentimes requiring a team of at least 5 guys just for one level, and that's regardless of the quality and maneuverability of the tools. Not to say it couldn't be done differently from the way idstudio has been coming along for the last six or so years mind you, but ~20 years of classic doom maps might have jaded their view somewhat.

There aren't a whole lot of good options.

There's the Rossi/Taurus rifles but they're absolutely abysmal quality.
They feature a shield by the cylinder gap to protect your arm, which is a good idea, but the execution of the things is just awful.


Uberti makes a replica of the old Colt Buntline revolver (Single Action Army with a long barrel and a stock), which probably is pretty nice, given Uberti, it's available in .44 Magnum, and probably .45 Colt, though you can't shoot it in double-action.

There's the cylinder gap there still, though, so you gotta keep your hands back.
I imagine you could find a good gunsmith to fit a blast shield by the gap if you wanted to, as well as a wood handguard on the front. That shit isn't free though.

I grabbed the latest x64 dev build, what I'm pretty sure is the latest x64 stable build, the last x64 build that worked with doorpeg when Kate and Kyle dropped out, and a dev build I just had laying around, I'm not sure what version it was. Only the last one launched, but the sprites were all flickery.

"User info descriptor too big" error means that combined length of some console variable's name and its value is exceeding the engine limit. Deleting/renaming your .ini file should solve the problem.
Alternatively, you can open the mentioned .ini in text editor and look for long lines, like with more than 200 characters. Delete such line(s) and save the file.

Pretty damn cool stuff you've got there.
I'd say the Rocket Launcher is really the let down of the group though. You've got all these weapons with flashy effects and oomphy sound effects, and then you've got this gun that sorta clinks a bit and then pafs a few explosions for a split second.

I'm sure it does damage, but goddamn it feels like I could burp stronger attacks than that thing. All the other weapons seem really good too, which makes the RL even more odd.

I got the chaingun mostly done, working my way up to the BFG after I get home from work. I'll release a test version here first, once all the weapons are implemented. I intend for the mod to mostly leave the monsters alone and let you use watever monster replacer like Colorful Hell, etc.

You could make the gun similar to a Nagant revolver, if it's just .22LR rifle it probably won't require as stiff of a trigger, and it'd still give you a gas seal, removing the danger of cylinder gap, as well as being suppressable.

Izhmash was looking at making a gun just like that once, but decided not to produce it.

I'd recommend trying to make the cylinder and barrel out of steel, hammer too.

A loading gate and an ejector rod wouldn't really be difficult to design. On an old Colt the gate would interact with the lockwork but you really don't actually need to have it do that, it can just be a hinged piece that covers the cylinder.

It's not really a typical revolver is the thing. Here's a difference design where the firing pin rotates to match 4 barrels (not a complete design - trigger spring is too small and other shit, all just shat out in an afternoon), but the cylinder on the thing I'm talking about revolves similarly.

It's just not like other revolvers - and for no good reason. It's just for fun.

I have to make the forge first anyway, and the design will probably turn into something more viable in that time. The only real goal is to make something cheap and mechanically simple.

wow what a wad. i played the doom1 version. won on the second attempt, after an early death due to underestimating number of hitscanners. as you say, nearly all monsters are sergeants. but fortunately the map is very spacious, so they can be kept at sufficient range, and you can stay healthy. as for the ending, i found the BFG so the cyberdemon wasn't too much of a problem. it seems you can accidentally teleport in there if you are unlucky.

Looks like the light needs to come more from up top, but then the head won't be lit well. Could put another spotlight on the head but I want to try and solve the lighting problem with the same number of lights used in the original sprites, which would be 1 lamp and some reflected light from white surfaces.

first map is a more compact e2m1 clone, felt like a single long corridor than the more spacious original. secrets were all pretty obvious wall miscolorations.

second map, red bricks and lava corridors off a central caged tower+moat. easy to lock yourself out of computer map secret since the floor only lowers once and return is triggered by walkover, easy to hit unintentionally. chainsaw secret was good but chainsaw itself was pointless, a soulsphere or blue armour would have been better

Holy shit, Cyberdemons are SO much more difficult in Immoral Conduct, the rockets are way faster and are way more powerful, he also has NO delay in starting his shooting, Cybie is a fucking quickdraw, often he'll launch a flurry the split second he spots you.

I often found him 'missing' his rocket, hitting the wall BEHIND ME, the explosion throwing me out of from the cover of the pillar, where he would hit me straight in the face with his second or third rocket, killing me in an instant, like the bitch I am, which almost feels deliberate.

I really fucking love how much harder he is, even when locked at a static position.

so you'd call a script on the puff with ACS_NamedExecuteWithResult, which would be able to:

- from there calculate distance from firer to puff, and then damage that should be done

the reason why we can't have the ACS script do the damage directly is because ACS is... really fucking dumb with applying damage.
so instead, now that we have the damage to be done stored in the puff, we can now A_DamageTracer(user_bulletdamage, <damage type>, 0, "", "", AAPTR_TARGET).

that AAPTR_TARGET makes it so you need a dev build, no fucking joke. it's so the puff's damage is connected to you.

if damage isn't actually being done with A_DamageTracer, switch those blank strings to "none" before doing anything else - I haven't used A_DamageTracer at all since it's not in zandronum 3.
