Why is Final Fantasy so popular anyway? I can't stand any of the games except 4 and 5.

And why do they use such big numbers for damage and boss HP? Halfway through a game your characters do like 5000 points of damage. It's ridiculous.

If you release that game, in Europe, where we didn't have a lot of JRPGs (0 FFs, 0 DQs), it's easy to think why it started to be so popular.

OP here, these threads are meant for all things Dragon Quest. We're not on /vg/ only because this thread isn't popular enough to survive there, so we set up these threads in /vr/. That means you may talk about the 3DS version of Dragon Quest VII and any other modern or retro Dragon Quest games as much as you like. We don't talk about the DS version of VII though, fuck that game.

I say we make the next thread Dragon Quest VII themed to support its release in the West, because in two weeks it will be just about ready to release. And we should probably start putting an FAQ in the OP so that we don't have to answer these questions every thread. What do you guys say?

Play the original first, then play the remake later on. Like someone said in the last thread, playing the remake first would inform your perceptions on characters and places based on the accents. I really want to like Dragon Quest VI, but I'm struggling to play through it. The second half of the game is just a bunch of sidequests loosely stringed together, and the game makes no effort to hide that. It really contrasts with how tight the first half is. I think some of the subplots might be more interesting if my characters had a reason for doing them other than that the person coincidentally has the item you need in order to progress, or if they were tied into the main plot. Right now I just beat Glacos and I'm in Barbara's hometown where the Hero's real form is. My main problem is that the objective is to find your true form, but you don't follow a trail of clues or anything. You just happen to stumble upon him from doing a bunch of unrelated shit. It just feels like wasted potential. I also really really want Terry in my party. Why the fuck do I have to wait so long to get him? It seems like by the time you get him, he'll be worthless because all your other party members are already fully leveled in their classes.

Is Dragon Quest VII even worse in this regard? Or did they make it feel more like you actually have a purpose for what you're doing?

VI really drags in the middle, but it does pick up again towards the end. Still not a huge fan of it.

VII is similar to VI in a lot of regards, but I feel that overall it was executed a lot better. It's still very episodic with many self contained sub-plots, but the stories are lot more interesting and fleshed-out. They very a lot in tone as well. Also, doing these quest helps the main characters find the pieces they need to re-build the world. As you restore the world you learn how it was broken up in the first place and the larger narrative starts to reveal its self.

Rumor has it that during the next Nintendo Direct they're going to announce that Dragon Quest VIII 3DS is coming to the west on December 8th with a new voice acting cast. I predicted before in a previous thread that they were probably going to have to replace the voice actors so that they can account for more bonus content and extra dialogue in the remake. Also Dragon Quest III and Dragon Quest V SFC are apparently coming to Virtual Console in Japan. It's a rumor from /v/ though, so don't get too excited.

I figured I might as well post it here since the Nintendo Direct is in two days, and the rumors don't sound that unreasonable. Are you guys going to watch it? They'll probably have some more information on Dragon Quest VII as well.

The last couple of times I played the game, it was the SFC version. I imagined her personality based on her few lines of dialogue and artwork, so I saw her as a quiet girl with a traumatic past. The fact that she knew everything from the beginning but decided not to tell Hassan and the Hero makes her come off as a mysterious and strange person. That's kind of cool I guess.

Barbara has a great personality in both versions, though. She is very cheerful and likable. She's feminine without being too girly, but she's not a tomboy either. She's the kind of girl that wouldn't mind hanging out with boys and would use words like "ass" without blushing. But rather than being vulgar, she's genuinely nice and sweet. Her personality is absolutely perfect. She reminds me of Rosie from Animal Crossing or Kairi from Kingdom Hearts.

The remake allows her to comment on everything and show more of her personality, while the lack of dialogue in the original version makes it more obvious that she's suffering from amnesia and doesn't really speak unless something interesting is happening or someone talks to her.

I think she is cuter in the SFC version, though. She looks much better in the old artworks (the remake forces you to look at her shitty redesign in battle). She comes off as a cheerful and outgoing girl that can't really show her personality because of her amnesia. It's a nice contrast that makes her seem really cute and fragile. She becomes quiet sometimes, as if she's lost in thought, but she's actually a very lively person.

This is how I imagine her personality, based on her old artwork and her few lines in the SFC version. I think the remake should have given the amnesia part more importance in the party chat dialogue. She was too talkative and didn't appear to be confused by her situation most of the time. She doesn't remember anything about her past and is following the hero for no real reason. Why are the DQ7 characters "lost in thought" more often than her?

Also, she has as pretty sad backstory that gives you a good reason to hate Deathtamoor/Mortamor. He fucking killed her and everyone in her city. That's literally worse than anything Gema and Mildrath did in DQV. She is separated from the hero at the end of the game, when the dream world and all the dream people lose their physical form. That's really sad too, especially because they actually liked each other. On top of being the most tragic DQ character and having the best personality, she is also beautiful, has a really cool outfit and is pretty badass. She learns Madante, the most powerfull spell in the world. That's awesome. And the name of the spell is really cool too.

She's my favorite DQ character and probably one of the reasons I like DQ6 so much. The game has some flaws, but it has amazing characters. Hassan is a total bro. I like Kiefer a bit more, but he's definitely better than Henry.

Grind a couple of levels in the palace while you explore it and find the shortest path to the boss, but try not to get killed. Return to the town and sleep. Buy the boomerang when you have the money. When you feel you are ready for the boss, go to the palace and fight him. Heal yourself with herbs and don't waste Bianca's magic using attack spells. Try to win the random encounters using only attack, which should be easy with your boomerang. If Bianca is too weak, just let her parry for the entire battle.

You should reach the boss in good shape. You can now spam magic all you want. Reduce his defense as much as possible and destroy him! Remember that you can parry and heal preemptively.

This sounds more like a complaint with DS emulation in general. And I agree, DS emulation sucks. So don't do it, simple. Just play the roms on an actual DS if you really need to play it that way. I've never really noticed the extra screen getting in the way in the DS remakes though, mostly it's just for maps and expanded fields.

I also don't like the new translations either, but shit like this:

Anyway, I'm about to finish IV for the first time. The accents were honestly pretty shitty (as a frenchfag, chapter 4 with Maya made me physically cringe) but I still enjoyed every other aspect of the game. It's amazing how it's just so well balanced that you don't need to grind at all and the game keeps being a consistent, fair and fun challenge. The world felt alive and this is not an easy thing to do in video games.

I also played VIII but it just seems to be dragging on for-fucking-ever and I just dropped it. I can't play more than 30-40 hours before I just lose interest and it just becomes a chore at that point. Though I must say that it is one of the best-looking games I have ever played/seen.

IV was already the easiest game in the series. Every character is a god by the end of the game. But everything felt right. Why did they even bother making it easier? It only ruins the pacing and makes everything feel rushed.

And no, they didn't remove "grinding". The original didn't even have any grinding. What they removed is something far more important. The pacing of the game is now way too fast. That makes the game a lot worse.

Imagine if towns in the DQ3 remake had their NES size even though the characters move three times faster. The towns would feel really small and that would ruin your immersion. That's why they made the towns bigger, to compensate for the faster movement speed. What happened to the pacing in DQIV and DQV is something similar. But instead of making the game harder to compensate for the modern mechanics and game breaking weapons introduced in later games, they made the game easier for no reason.

A sage is technically a mixture of a mage and a cleric. In Dragon Quest VI you literally have to master both the mage and cleric classes before you can become a sage. Think of it like a Red Mage from Final Fantasy except with no limit on the spells they can learn.

That's why I would probably suggest turning your cleric into a warrior or something like that. Of course, you can experiment with other classes such as the Merchant, Goof-Off, and Thief if you want. Later games have more options for combinations (such as the battlemage).

You need to manipulate their stats into a certain range using the seeds you get, but even then you might still have to try multiple times.

I fucking love Kiefer. He's cool, his friendship wih the hero is both funny and heartwarming and he stays in the past and you never see him again. The idea of him being long dead in the present is really sad, but you can't help but feel happy for him.

I think the most fascinating thing about Kiefer is his design. He looks kind of ugly in some pictures but handsome in others. His design (especially the hair) seems to be a parody of the stereotypical prince charming. But instead of being a slender pretty boy, he's manly as fuck.

I also love saying no to Kiefer every time he asks me a question in the beginning of the game. He comes off as a bully every single time, but he's still extremely likable for some reason.

If it makes you feel better, the MIDI soundtrack is much closer to the original PS1's score.

Yes, 3DS has backwards compatibility. Dragon Quest VII comes out in about two weeks on 3DS, so you have that to look forward to. That's also the only 3DS Dragon Quest game released in the west, so unless you're looking to import that's your only option there. If you haven't played many Dragon Quest games before, I'd say come back to it later, since it's really fucking long. As for the DS Dragon Quest games, there are the three mainline remake games IV, V, and VI. Technically a trilogy but the order you play them in doesn't really matter. I'd definitely recommend V, but obviously quite a few people in this thread have a problem with IV's DS remake. Oh, and there's IX too. IX is alright but not really like other Dragon Quest games. He can't pretend like he's equal to everyone else, as he's been told he's different than everyone else his entire life. He hates it. He really just wants to enjoy himself a little and find some place where he can feel comfortable. That's why the ruins adventures are so fun to him, in the other worlds he's just another guy.

DQVII isn't some grand overt story and most of the time it has the main plot in the background. That being said, the few big elements it has are pretty well done.

What level should I be for the final boss of Dragon Quest VI? My party is around level 33 right now and I was thinking about grinding my classes to max rank.

>> No.3478154

>>3478126
The level doesn't really matter, but you should have a sage and a superstar in your party. Hustle dance is amazing. Mastering hero with the hero would be good too. The passive HP recovery is very useful.

The bonus boss is HARD as balls. If you want to fight him, you need to find a secret item (revealed during the ending) that allows you to access the final class. Master every class and you can enter the bonus dungeon.

The best places to grind classes are the tower of the wizard (you can even warp there) and the sunken ship. There is no level cap in those places.

I didn't bother trying to kill the bonus boss, because he was way too fucking hard. But the bonus dungeon had some nice surprises.

>mastering every class
You don't have to master every class on the same character. Even characters outside the party gain job experience so have them master the useless classes like Paladin, Mageknight and Ranger. For example I did the following:

>Hero mastered: Fighter, Soldier, Gladiator, Hero
>Hassan mastered: Fighter, Soldier, Gladiator
>Muriel mastered: Dancer, Goof-Off, Super Star, Priest, Wizard, Sage
>Barbara mastered the same shit as Muriel
>Chamaro mastered: Priest, Fighter, Paladin
>Amos mastered: Thief, Beast Master, Merchant , Ranger
>Terry mastered: Soldier (he starts with that maxed), Wizard, Mageknight
All you need for the bonus boss is two characters with Hustle Dance and you can easily outheal all damage it does. Alternatively you can replace a Hustle Dance with the Sage's Stone.

I think the only character that can access Dragon is Drago. You have to master it with her. Once you get to the bonus dungeon, you can buy dragon books that will let other characters use the dragon class, but by that point you don't really need it.

I don't find that very fun.

I too dumped all the shitty ranger classes on Amos, though.

Does every game in the series get really tedious towards the end, or is it just the first few?

I've beaten I and II, and I'm just about to beat III, and every one I've really enjoyed up until the last parts of the game, and then it starts feeling like a major chore figuring out where to go and tracking everything down. Not to mention I'm really eager to play IV.

But I thought people liked the sassy and brash Maribel. You can't have it both ways; she can't be sassy and brash while being demure and innocent.

Just about all of the games have a collection quest at the end of the game, including IV. I really like the orb quest in III though, why don't you like it? The exploration part of these games is awesome, in my opinion.

>> No.3480494

>>3480431
Oh well, I still enjoy the rest of the game enough that I think the rest of the series is something I'll also like. The orb quest specifically wasn't bad, but there was other fetch-y/explore-y stuff around the same time that I wasn't into.

On the topic of IV, do you have a version preference?

DQ2 is the worst as far as the end-game treasure hunt because the clues are so vague. The later games get better at telling you what you need to do. But most all of the games do have a mid/late game moment where the majority of the world map suddenly opens up and you're just expected to explore everywhere until you stumble on to your next objective.

>> No.3480846

>>3480376
Just because some twat assumes that Maribel's character is pro-feminist doesn't make it true. She's just a brash kid that always speaks her mind.

And fuck you for trying to stir shit.
