I can't believe this shit.

So apparently Gearbox's new version of Duke Nukem 3D will be out in a week. It will include a "new episode".

There is no art direction whatsoever, it's like those shitty fan mods that take textures from many different games and put them together; all with badly done weapon reskins and alt-palette "new enemies".

But the worst part? Their "dynamic lights", which they ripped off from EDuke32 but re-built from the ground up to avoid paying royalities, just like their 3D renderer.

The problem with the dynamic lights is that it seems to be their excuse NOT to build sector based shading.

None of the new levels shown in these pics depict any sector based shadow, and there is a lack of wall shading in many parts.

Sector/wall shading is one of the essence of 2.5D shooters. Mixing them with dynamic lights, can look good, if done in a right way, but this here is just lazy.

Holy shit guys, grow some standard.

Do you not see how badly designed the flamethrower is? Even if you pass on how it's just a freezer reskin, there are still yellow parts in it.

What about the fact their idea of an enemy of fire is giving them the red palette and applying new fire sprites randomly, which can look very unfiitting. Not too mention the lack of consistency between the old fire sprites, which you can see here as well, and the new ones.

What about all those textures, that are completely unfitting for DN3D in terms of style and colour. Let's not mention the inconsistent resolutions for sprites like those damn trees. There is also the inconsistent texture resolutions in the 3rd screenshot.

Then you have all the visual noise, all at all that shit around the wall texture and pot sprite on the first screenshot.

But really the main problems is the mish mash of textures and themes and the way they handled, or didn't handle, shadows and shading.
For instance in the 2nd screenshot, they put an artificial light in the goddamn cliff, out of lazyness even though something like this CALLS for great looking strong sector based shadows.

This could be nice, as far as fan mods are concerned....

My only hope is that these are beta screenshots and all will be fixed, but I have a feeling the screenshots got "leaked" on purpose for viral advertising.

Not exactly; They made their own sourceport, so it's not the same. Also according to those screenshots they're adding dynamic lights to the original game, I hope they are optional.

Also, chances are that the add-ons that Megaton came with, the original add-ons (Caribbean Life, Duke It Out in DC and Nuclear Winter) won't be included this time around because that would mean paying royalties to a 3rd party; and as proven by how this port was made, they're pretty stingy with that, as they'd rather remake the entire sourceport from scratch rather than paying royalties for an existing one, even if the later costs more.

First of all the dynamic lights they are using are new, different than the ones EDuke32 use.

Then, it's been confirmed already that they changed the original game's code, which broke compatibility with 20 years of mods.

This may also mean that, as is, the new code they're using won't be compatible with EDuke32.

In my opinion, that argument only works if you are opposed to the general concept of the product in question. I think most people in this thread like Duke Nukem and older FPS games and would likely be happy with a new episode with new assets. However, from what has been shown it brings into question the execution of the thing that many of us probably want. For me right now the biggest "that looks like shit" point is the botched backgrounds.

I'm guessing the way the game now handles the backgrounds is by placing the original, unmodified texture onto a skydome that covers the play area. That'd explain why the perspective is all fucked up.

It's complicated. When Megaton was made, someone else had the rights to DN3D, or at least thought they did (the result of the last courtcase is still unclear).

Gearbox had to take it down for a while to shift the rights, but yes they could have put Megaton back with their name on it.
However, that would have meant paying royalties to a bunch of people they don't want paying royalties to, including the EDuke32 makers who had a role in it, and whoever still owns the rights to the original add-ons, which so far are nowhere to be found in this new release.

Besides the key here is to have something "new" enough to make people pay the high price.

>>3455072
I'm sorry but if we're going that way, the DN3D community would have obviously been better suited than Doom's.
This being said, I don't know many mappers who have made great classic style maps, myself included, but perhaps it's just because they don't try.

I believe pro level designers are more likely to study mid 90's FPS level design than to sit on their ego, but what do I know really.

If you didn't already know; you can extract eDuke files to Duke Nukem Megaton steam folder and switch the dosbox exe to eDuke exe, and be able to play eDuke via steam with all the steam benefits.

You can show everybody how much of a badass hardcore Duke Nukem fan you are with your high play hours and screenshots. Same thing also works with Open X-COM.

Cringy? Yes. Politically correct? Hell no.

As much as I hate Randy Moneymemeford, but if he knows what makes Duke a Duke and keeps it that way, it's going to be fine.

As long as he doesn't force his politics or any social justice agenda in the game.

>People don't play /vr/ games for the look, they look like shit by today's standards.

I'm very sorry you if you feel that way. Beautiful art isn't dictated by the advancement of the technical execution.
As far as video games are concerned though, it is a common belief, what publishers and hardware sellers want you to believe so that you keep buying their shit at the high price. A belief that is also spread by video game journalists and their shitty reviews measuring the number of pixels and polygons visible on a screen.

>It looks better!
No, it doesn't. It's technically more advanced, but that doesn't mean that anything made with it will automatically look better than everything made during the past generations.

You should open your eyes and make up your own taste instead of having your thoughts dictated by corporate technological shenanigans. You'll appreciate retro games more.

Duke Nukem 3D has its own visual style. The colours are harmonious, sprites and textures fit together. It has strong contrasts due to a good use of sector and wall shading.
And above all, it doesn't have unfinished weapon sprites which colours bleed and which screams "interns' first shoop".

And this, is why these screenshots look like shit. Either they're not taking it seriously because, like yourself, they think "who cares it's old, it looks like shit anyway", or they don't want to pay too much for a re-release and use untrained interns, or making a 2.5D FPS is so different than a modern one that they don't know how to do it.

So I can take all your favourite retro games and ruin all the graphics by drawing random shit on them, and also change all the light/shading work with a technical standard of the next generation that doesn't fit with those games.

Doesn't matter right, these games are obsolete.

I don't know if they tried to negotiate for Megaton edition, but it's unlikely considering the way it got taken down.

They definitely haven't tried to make a commercial version of EDuke32, which would have been a sensible solution considering their version is a rip-off of it and they even used EDuke32's map editor to make the new levels.

So they could have used EDuke32, and the only thing they would have had to work on was the multiplayer. It would have saved a lot of development time and manpower, which is money.

Instead, they re-made from scratch with the same features (while fucking up compatibility with existing mods at the same time). Granted, the EDuke32 source is available to anyone, so they were free to rip it off at will, which probably saved time, but they still had to remake it their way.
In case you wonder "how do I know that" again,
it's not assumptions. One of the devs of EDuke32 got hired as "consultant" for a while, and he witnessed huge chunks of their code used as placeholder.

>Or if paying royalties would fuck them up till the end of time for everything Duke Nukem related that'll be released by them or whoever buys the IP later?

No, not Duke Nukem franchise, just THIS version of DN3D. A third party work used on "Duke Nukem 3D: World Tour Edition" isn't going to give that person royalties for Duke Nukem Forever or Duke Nukem 5.

And if it's a problem to "whoever acquires the IP later", then they can do just like Gearbox did with Megaton and the GoG version. Take them down.

tl;dr Yes, when I'm saying that paying royalties for product A costs less than re-making product A from scratch, I'm making assumptions, I don't know the actual numbers.

>> No.3462957

>>3462947
>>3462771
But think business for a second, the EDuke32 wouldn't have asked for royalties if the sum they'd demand was greater than the potential profit Gearbox could make if they built the product themsleves.

Because if they did, they knew Gearbox would refuse and go for the cheaper option. They must have people whose job is to estimate the long term profit in each case.

This is why paying royalties for EDuke32 would have necessarly been the cheaper way.
It's not like Gearbox needed to have it done very quickly, or didn't have the skills to do it themselves; and the EDuke32 devs are a small company who could REALLY use money. Gearbox would have had the upper hand, by far.

Honestly, I feel the only reason is that Pitchford wants to claim Duke Nukem for himself, and himself alone. And he'd rather use more company for that.

>>3462906
>Go ahead, I'll just not play your version and keep the original.

EDuke32 automatically detects grp from Megaton (original game + add-ons) and they should show up to be select in the startup window (you can re-enable the startup window in the game's options if it doesn't show). Megaton made playing add-ons much easier.

Forgot to mention, originally the game's resolution could only go as far as 800*600. However, there were simple patches for higher resolutions. Later stock Build games could go up to 1600*1200 and above.

So don't feel bad for using higher resolutions. But there isn't much difference between 800*600 and above for Build anyway.

One last minor thing. EDuke32 uses Atomic Edition behaviour, even if you're using the original 1.3 version GRP.
Originally in 1.3 you could use both mighty boot kicks at the same time and couldn't kill slimers with the boot kick. This got changed in Atomic Edition, and EDuke32 goes by that rule, even for 1.3.

"classic" is the original 2.5D Build renderer
"polymost" is a true 3D renderer, which has the advantage of looking very close to the original while being true 3D (no distortion when looking up and down). Light and shadows remain the same. It should also be faster than classic.
"polymer" is true 3D and can give shiny lights and shadows like for Gearbox's upcoming version. However they're turned off by default now for some reasons so you have to go in "polymer setup".
I just tested myself and wasn't getting any shadow either, which is weird.

I've been making maps for DN3D and been part of the community since 2004. This will affect the game to some degree. Look at Megaton, it had its lot of pros&cons. It brought tons of players some of which downloaded maps on the workshop, that's the pro. The con is that it was full of glitches, which speedrunners abused and made famous, giving the game a bad rep, as people will say and think "DN3D is full of glitches" rather than "Megaton is full of glitches".

>still have 3 incomplete achievements on Duke Nukem: Megaton
>they're all multiplayer achievements
>tfw servers are probably dead already

Also, what's going to happen with Duke Nukem 1, Duke Nukem 2, and Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project? They also were removed during the great Duke purge. Are they going to be bundled together with the new Duke Nukem 3D anniversary edition?

>> No.3467517

What would be the chances of Gearbox not being such faggots for one moment, and doing something nice ie. giving free copies of the new Duke 3D for people who already own the Megaton Edition on steam?

Or do they honestly expect people to buy the same game for the second/third/fourth time? I already have 2 Duke Nukem 3Ds in my steam library. 3 if Megaton Edition's classic Duke Nukem 3D is included.

Titan Quest anniversary edition was released yesterday, and the devs gave free copies for everyone who already owned the original. The anniversary edition came bundled with all the expansions and whatnot, so even if you didn't own the expansion originally you got it for free anyway. I hope Gearbox will do something similar.
If Gearbox handed out free copies for loyal Douk fans, that would be pretty cool.

Also Quake 20th anniversary got a free new episode. I know it's not the same but...

Shadow Warrior remake was pretty nice, but it was super repetitive and not "old school" like the reviews made it sound like. It was more like Serious Sam and Painkiller:
>walk in room
>room gets sealed
>bunch of enemies teleport in the room
>kill the enemies
>room gets unsealed
>proceed
>repeat

The swordplay is great and feels just right, but I wish the game was more like the original Shadow Warrior with actual multilayered mazelike levels.

I don't know. I enjoyed the remake a lot for what it was, but it was limited and had balancing issues (above Hard difficulty, only the sword and rocket launcher are useful) and enemies tend to be bullet sponges.

I've never played Borderlands. It doesn't look interesting to me, but SW2, I think I'm going to get. Plus, it only costs 30bucks and the recommended specs are low.

If you like the original SW, check out my map. It's on Redux' workshop, but it's also vanilla and SWP compatible.

If you ask me the best way to play Shadow Warrior is still in DOS(box).

Redux uses a true3D renderer, so it's good if you're allergic to the way 2D engines look when yo look up and down, and it also has some remade art but mostly stuff like menus and HUD.
Depending on your computer you may get higher framerate more easily with Redux than with DOSbox.

Good thing about it was that it came with the 2 add-ons, but they're now free as well as the original on GoG in a DOSbox version.

>Greetings and welcome to my review of Gearbox's re-release of the greatest game ever Duke Nukem 3D. Upon layering it with added modern visual effects and re-recording all of the original lines with the great Jon St. John. Though the lines had some tweaking to make them more appropriate for modern times, They have never sounded better in quality. Gearbox also went out of their way to graciously add Dukes World Tour, a new campaign featuring new levels and a new weapon. Thankfully Duke has brought his topical wit to him, making references to modern pop-culture. The Big Bang Theory, Fury Road, and the dreaded Gamergate are targets of Dukes one-liners, and while some may call them "references" or "memes" Duke has always been about taking culture and making it his own, parodying it if you will. With Duke Nukem Forever: Gearbox redefined the FPS genre by simply making fun of it with poor design decisions.

3DRealms didn't "develop" anything for Blood. They were publishers of it, when Q Studios was the developer. Q Studio was acquired by Monolith and 3DRealms sold them the publishing rights.

As for the engine, any Build game's engine is divided in two.
There is the "Build" code, developed by K. Silverman on one side, taking care of things like the rendering, and the "game" code on the other side taking care of things like gameplay behaviours and in game effects.
This is why most Build games are completely different, despite sharing that same base. This is the reason why you can't just play other Build games in a DN3D sourceport like you could play Heretic in a Doom port.

Here is an explanation on how it works :
http://fabiensanglard.net/duke3d/index.php

Anyway, so this together creates what we'd call an "engine". The "Build" code, developers of game had no access to. If they wanted changes, they had to ask Silverman. Unsatisfied with his response, Monolith reverse-engineered part of it to make their changes. But things like TRoR and in game effects are actually on the side of the "game" code.

So, Q Studios/Monolith did the level design. They did everything in Blood except the "Build" code, but which they modified to some extent anyway.

I remember that. I also remember them trying to explain the failure of Duke Forever because "it simply doesn't work nowadays". It just showed that the so called experts of gaming didn't know jack shit about video games. The game sucked ass because it completely missed what made Duke Nukem 3D so damn good.

Duke Nukem Forever is the perfect example of what is wrong with modern gaming.

Right now I'm on a netbook with a 2.16 > 2.58 GHz Celeron, Intel HD 4000(?) & 2GB RAM. Now this is a toaster, but it runs the web well and I actually use it to play a lot of games, many much more advanced than Duke Nukem 3D. Max Payne 1 & 2, Rollcage I & II, Red Faction; all at max settings. It runs eduke32 just great (but not polymer with lights on).

What gearbox are doing is pure bullcrappen, and people who hand-wave away specs are part of the problem. This is shit programming and lazy-af development practices. There is no justification under the sun to require a damned i3 for a game with <1000 polys on scene and billboard sprites.

Bullshit. Even original duke running through DOSbox (on top of "modern OS") will be faster on lower specs than what gearbox are asking.

I set my laptop to cap the CPU at 600 MHz on battery and was able to play 3D games from 2000/2001 without speed loss. Modern CPUs are crazy efficient with near-1 IPC.

It's bad programming of the lights, let's be correct here. What's the fillrate of a modern card now -- gigapixels, right? So you're telling me that a medium range GPU is required to colour <1000 polys (there are about 30 polys max in that particular screenshot) and even at per-pixel that's still only 2M at 1920x1080, hardly anything even for a integrated graphics.

DNF could have been redeemed had it gotten a modding community, the potential for interactive environments was in the campaign, but it meant nothing when there was no way to mod it. Gearbox being utter cunts really did fuck it up and it's a shame that if it did had a modding community, it would be worth pirating or buying used. But no.

One of the greatest things about DN3D was the modding community that still keeps it alive and relevant today, DNF on the other hand was always a vaporware joke in development, a polarized mess at launch, and after all that and 2 short DLC packs that are useless, it's pretty much dead. Had there been a modding community, it could have at least been mentioned as one of those games where "It's horrible, but the mods make it fun", but of course Gearbox didn't want to light the spark for a modding community, despite the fact that the modding community is what made DN3D so great and that the game was on the mother fucking Unreal engine.

IGN posted some preview gameplay videos.

The sound quality of the old effects is ATROCIOUS. They succeeded in making it worse than a 1996 sound.

Then there is the new JSJ. There is a dichotomy between the sound quality of the that and the rest, and it looks like at least half of the re-recordings sound worse then the original.

Thank fuck the community will fix all of this with a mod, or make the new content playable in EDuke32 with the original sound quality which is all that matters.

One of the videos show a gameplay "rewind" feature.

Good thing is you can turn off the dynamic lights by the press of a key.

Also what does it matter, nobody fucking goes on this 4chan board anyway.

But really, the issue is, you can't patch the console versions. Then, not everyone on PC will patch them either, it's a minority.

The only part I didn't like was that battle in the field with the turret and trenches and all the guys spawning in. I'm not the biggest fan of SW to begin with (compared to Duke and Blood), and that part just rammed home how I find the enemies annoying, especially with their ducking behaviors.

First time I have laughed all day, thank you.

Honestly it doesn't matter, the new episode will get uploaded and you'll be able to download it and play it in eDuke and there will literally be no reason to buy this (especially not at $20) unless you absolutely have to have Dook on your PS4 or something.

Everyone who isn't a dumbshit is just going to either pirate it or wait until it's $7 in a Humble Bundle in two months next to Battleborn again.

Not even comparable to the way those dickbags in Shadow Warrior pop up and down behind boxes and crouch down to avoid your rockets. Fucking annoying.

I want to bet it's because of the shitty programming libraries devs use, or the fact that Duke 3D is forever cursed to never have a well optimized source port. Megaton collection crashes at various points, Eduke32 uses 15% of my CPU at the fucking title menu, not to mention Polymer is bloated as all fuck. It's so weird how Doom gets Zandronum, which uses practically nothing of my CPU in OpenGL and everything, along with various other homeports, yet Duke just has EDuke32.

Crouching for Cultists in Blood is part of their natural AI behaviour.

In Shadow Warrior, ninjas only crouch when the mapper wanted them to. They're like a Ninja variant, the crouching variant, that will only do these crouching/crawling behaviour until he's dead.

FUN FACT : You know how coloured ninjas can fire grenades/rockets? Well crouching coloured ninjas don't, but they still retain the extra HP of the coloured ninja variants. I had never realized that before until I made my own map and read about it in a tutorial.

>JSJ is probably the biggest Duke fan himself
Well it's a really fun and recognizable character (as well as an outrageous one) that a lot of people love and have come to be one of the icons of gaming, his voice is really what makes that magic work too, any performer would be proud of something like that.

I mean, regardless of how bad DNF actually was, he saw people wait expectantly way over a decade for it to actually come, people REALLY wanted to see his character again still, for all that time, and even after the critical flop, I don't think people hold any real ill will against Duke as a character, more just the game itself as a whole, and that really tells you something about a performance (and obviously of the quality of game that performance was originally part of).

I mean, I still want another Duke Nukem, as do many others, but Gearbox isn't exactly treating the property with respect, which is where I feel one of the big problem lies. Listening to his line readings for the rerecordings, I sort of get the feeling that he has a pessimistic attitude towards the future of Duke Nukem as a character and game franchise, draining him of his usual enthusiasm and spirits.

Thing with trademarks is that they're context sensitive, what gives you exclusivity in one field will not give you exclusivity in another.

You can trademark a phrase for marketing purposes in a particular field, but that doesn't give you exclusive rights to that phrase in any and all contexts.

Even if you were to successfully trademark the phrase "Thank you" as a phone company, that would only apply in the business of telephony, so you couldn't sue or Cease & Desist just any person using the phrase "Thank you"

The final build of Duke Nukem Forever was genuinely a fucking atrocity though, on top of people holding their breath for 14 years waiting for it to finally release.

If it had been just mediocre, I don't think people would have been even close to as mad.

Half-Life Ep3 turning out like Duke Nukem Forever hinges on how the development looks, because the development of Duke Nukem Forever was a genuine shitshow, SO many blunders and errors and bad decisions, one of the big ones was desperately trying to keep up with current technology and constantly falling behind, the game really should have been finished and released before, or at, the year 2000, after that, I think it was too late and the mess had just compounded too much.

If Ep3 has even been developed for all this time is questionable, they may have writing, level layouts and resources available, but put the project on ice, then waiting for whenever they feel is appropriate to actually do a proper development and get the game released, assuming Valve has even been working on Ep3 at all and not just forgotten about it.

Also, though the Build Engine that was used for Duke was certainly janky, it was very advanced and traded graphic fidelity (true 3D) for speed and quantity, the levels in DN3D are all rather detailed and populated, enemies are plentiful, there's miscellaneous items everywhere, beer bottles, coffer brewers, trashcans, chairs and computers, vending machines and what have you.

Compare to the rivaling Quake of the same time, which had more advanced graphics, but also a more barren and less detailed world because of the limitations of that, less enemies, less effects, less doodads and objects.

Duke was advanced in it's own way and was impressive still for how well made it actually was for the way it rendered.

I don't know about Halo, but it's really nothing like Half-Life, because Half-Life lets you carry all your weapons, lots of ammo, you had to find health and the game rewarded exploration (with health, ammo and weapons), as well as having more than one type of enemy encounter (closing arenas where enemies slowly come in).

Nope.

Half-Life was fun, innovative, and engaging. And the technology was, at the time, mindblowing.

Half-Life 2 introduced facial expressions and realistic reactions with them. And making the environment HUGE using linked maps and clever skyboxes didn't hurt either. All the while keeping up the excellent story Half-Life 1 started.

Half-Life 3 is going to need to have a monumental leap forward in order to keep up with the hype that builds for it every single day or it will suffer the same fate DNF did, where "more of the same" isn't enough and everyone gets pissy.

and yeah. Duke3d was great fora 2.5D shooter. It was one of the best... In a world that had just been given it's first 3D shooter and on the cusp of a "3D is the future!" bandwagon. Face it, DOUK wasn't TECHNOLOGY incarnate. But it WAS damn good fun.

DNF suffered through pretty bad level design that was trying hard to be Half life 2, to the point where it does feel like a game from the 2005-2008 era of "We want to be like HL2" shooters where the whole game has to be one pathway and have obligatory Vehicle and torrent section. It was pretty obvious that Gearbox just took what was essentially a 2007 build of the game, touched it up a bit, and put it up for release (Which is pretty much the true story). The biggest sin I feel though is the lack of modding capabilities, Duke 3D essentially had this out of the box, and it made for one of the best modding communities of all time. DNF's Campaign did have a bit of neat sections with interactive environments that would have been pretty cool to experiment with in a map editor, but alas Gearbox didn't want that. It really is a shame, as meh as DNF's Singleplayer campaign is, a good modding community could have done wonders with what was there, maybe make a full on casino, maybe do straight up remakes of DN3D's levels, or very nice contemporary city levels with interactive environments and exploration based level design, but Gearbox wanted none of that, so after the whole bitter taste left our mouths, no one ever really spoke of DNF ever again.

Had a modding community been given a spark, it probably wouldn't have completely redeemed the game, but it would make it good enough where it would be one of those "Shitty game, but modding community makes it worth the price of entry" products, and made the game still relevant today, but as it stands, it's just going to be known as a huge disappointment forever.

Fuck you Gearbox.

Quake came out 6 months after DN3D. That's a lot, ESPECIALLY for PC gaming in that period. If you check stuff 6 months older than Quake, you'll be surprised too.

If Duke Nukem Forever played like Duke 3D with big well thought out maze-like levels, secrets, no hand-holding, no-regenerating health etc. just a DN3D with modern engine, it would had been great. The problem with Duke 3D was that it didn't follow up to Duke 3D. The only thing common with DN3D and DNF is that they're both first person shooters.

I wish Gearbox had given us the modding tools, we could be playing Duke Nukem 3D on Duke Forever's engine right now. (not that DNF engine is any good, but having custom levels would at least make it worth to play DNF again every now and then)

I really can't decide whether I'll be buying this or not.

The cons:
- Fucking Gearbox and the way they handled this version. I don't want them to give them my money.
- Shitty sound quality, redone Duke lines that sound worse, and censored healthkits. Can be patched though.
- Lot's of the new art are of bad quality and look out of place

The pros:
- I can play in the original 2.5D renderer and don't have to deal with the lights and post processing. Even Megaton wouldn't let you play with the original renderer
- New levels by the original level designers, with new musics by the original composer and new JSJ Duke lines. After 20 years, that sounds like a dream come true.
- Workshop support. My maps got an INSANE amount of download on Megaton's workshop and it could be the same here. I also contributed to upload lot's of quality maps by other mappers I love on Megaton's workshop among the tons of shovelware map, and someone's got to do that too for this new version. Due to how the workshop rating works, for better visibility you have to upload the maps as early as possible. Then agian is it worth it if most people play it with shitty lights and post processing not made for those maps?

I also feel shared about the price. On one hand, 20€ is a lot compared to Megaton, also considering this doesn't have the add-ons.
On the other hand, I am very confident this is about the equivalent price of something like Plutonium Pack and Caribbean Life back in the day. Had Megaton come out with a 10-20 bucks DLC consisting of a 8 new levels episode by the original level designers and music composer, I would have bought it right away.

wat do?! Piracy is not an option, can't upload workshop maps that way.

The EDuke32 devs aren't going to port anything themselves. The main dev of EDuke32 worked as a consultant on this for Gearbox.

But don't worry, other people will, and it shouldn't be a legal problem just like it's not a legal problem to play DN3D in EDuke32 as long as you have the game's files. There is also no reason why the new textures, sounds, musics, and code for the new episode wouldn't work with EDuke32. I'm sure most of it will work as is, and the rest could be converted faithfully.

I hope someone fixes all the visual issues we see in the new art, but that, is less likely.

Sin Center (with the help of another mapper), Sex City, Galbadia (with 3 other mappers) and deathmatch maps Canyon Bunker and Atomic Bunker. First two maps are the first two "top rated all time" on Megaton's workshop but it's mostly due to the fact I uploaded them early and due to how the workshop's rating and visibility system works. Also I guess sex sells. I don't claim these to be the best maps ever, I can't play Sin Center myself anymore, I only see its glaring noob flaws. I also made other maps which aren't on the workshop because they were made to be part of episodes for EDuke32.
I also uploaded plenty maps on Megaton's workshop, which is what I think is the most important. Most people in the community didn't bother, but I think it's important to give visibility to good maps. If nobody does it, only the sholverware stuff (which is plentiful on the worskhop) will get visibility

According to wikiquote, Duke supposedly says
>Mess with the best, you will die like the rest
in Duke Nukem 3D, which is a reference to movie Hackers (1995), but I don't recall Duke ever saying that in DN3D. I don't think I recall Duke ever saying that.

The audio is also fucked in general. The two gameplay videos from PAX had this really muffled sound for everything. Randy is claiming this version of Duke was never meant to replace Megaton Edition and the $20 is really for the new episode not for Duke 3D itself which is just a freebie that comes with it. Personally I don't buy it considering he could've always looked into getting some deal with Devolver Digital(the guys who published Megaton) to have the new episode be DLC for it instead of removing the better, cheaper and more content filled alternative. Really fucking doubt Devolver would turn something like that down either since they actually seem to give a shit about their customers unlike Gearbox.

I am pretty sure I read somewhere that Gearbox took it down without discussion, and also that the devs didn't get their part of money for the last couple of months sales because Gearbox kept it. I could be remembering wrong though, and the thread were this was discussed is now hidden.

As for Megaton being a better alternative, this remains to be proven. I liked and respected Megaton for what it was, I even wanted to contribute, but it has some huge flaws or lacking in some aspects, some of which we can already guess is not the case in World Tour.

For instance in Megaton you couldn't use the original 2.5D renderer. It's not really Build without it. In World Tour, you can.
Megaton didn't have true widescreen support (it's a zoom in), World Tour seems to have that.
Also Megaton's online had a lot of latency, and we can hope this one has better online.
Finally Megaton was full of glitches. Not only already existing glitches became a LOT easier to pull but it also introduced new ones. There is a reason why speedrunners use Megaton (just look at the speedrun.com page...) but if you ask me those aren't real DN3D speedruns, they're Megaton speedruns. Most of the stuff pulled in those speedruns couldn't be pulled so consistantly in the original game, if at all, and it gave a bad rep to the game, those speedrun have become quite famous after being seen in charity liveruns and I've heard people claim "DN3D is a glitchy mess" when it is in fact Megaton they're thinking about.
I don't believe the new port can be as bad in that regard, but who knows what else Nerve software fucked up.

Megaton edition can be launched in "classic" mode from the splash menu that lets you select which Douk expansion you play. Yeah you can't switch it during the game like you can with World Tour, but still.
