Rare is legit and had an unlimited budget. Came out a couple years after the movie even though the 64 wasn't even out yet so it didn't need to be rushed like most movie games. Got this game for my birthday 1997.

Developers (or any business for that matter) often have the mentality of "if it aint hot, fresh and new the kids wont want it" Which isn't really the case. Kids want to play what the older kids are playing/watching much like the genesis days.

I remember all the older kids/dads owned 007 and similar action movies so when the game came out everybody bought the damn thing.

In all honesty it could have been based on anything but being from specifically a well known action movie knocked it out of the park.

precisely, i guess movie games were usually not bad because not all combinations of gameplay had been done and a known brand was just used was cover for an already good game.

later it became the norm to just repackage an existing type of game or even a release one slightly modified and rebranded, and if you're doing just that, its easier to have it done by the time the film launches on cinemas

I think because it put the plot in the backseat and mainly used the movie as a framework to make an exciting action game. The plot is sort of there, but it's very simplified and has some alterations.

There's a few other games which does it rather well too, like True Lies and Stargate, both of these are rather challenging, and Stargate has sort of complex controls, but once you get used to them, they're really fun and exciting games.

I think what a lot of movie games do wrong is that either they barely follow the movie at all (common with a lot of NES games), or they try to follow the movie too much, at the expense of gameplay, something that's more common in post 2000 games.

>>3456331

Two to be exact. But, the DVD release of the movie happened around the same time (late 1996 - early 1997, I think), so the movie was still new.

http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Man_with_the_Golden_Gun,_The#Golden_Gun

>The Golden Gun is a fictional 4.2 mm single-shot handgun, the trademark of hitman Francisco Scaramanga (Christopher Lee) who uses it to assassinate his marks. It uses special golden bullets for maximum damage. The weapon breaks down for concealment and is usually carried as a series of everyday objects; a pen, a cuff link, a lighter and cigarette case. Scaramanga typically only uses a single bullet for each hit, but carries spares hidden in his belt buckle.

>At least three Golden Gun props were fabricated for the movie; one, which the crew called the "Gimmick Gun," was made for scenes where Scaramanga assembles the weapon, while the "stunt gun" was used for scenes where the gun is being handled, and did not come apart. A third version was built for firing scenes which could fire percussion caps.

The pen wouldn't actually work as a pen, as it has to be hollow and have a bore to act as the barrel for the gun (having no room for ink or graphite), the lighter would have to house the trunnion for the barrel and attachment point for the grip, as well as it's lid acting like a breech-block, the firing-mechanism and linkage for the trigger (which would be the cufflink) would also have to fit, there wouldn't really be any meaningful room for it to act as a real lighter.
The grip is a cigar case, which probably wouldn't have to contain any actual mechanical or functional parts, just being a grip.

Release date: 1997/04/24.

That's the first print Japanese release of Goldeneye. The USA release came out in 1997 late March.

That, plus Tomorrow Never Dies was released in 1997 in the theatres. So James Bond was very, very fresh in the memories of consumers, the fact that they made a game of the previous movie mattered little - it was still James Bond.

Made by a solid developer without the usual rushed release that most movie games suffer from. This at least gave it a chance to be decent.

But also the 4-player multiplayer was a huge breakthrough and probably the single most important thing that set it apart from other console FPS like Turok or Medal of Honor. If it hadn't been for multiplayer, it'd have a much different reputation.
