I enjoyed the games in their day. It was impressive unlike Catacombs 3D or Wolfenstein 3D where the ground was flat, there can be angled and heights to the floors. I got the second one because I really, really enjoyed 7, and the second Underworld continued on from the first half of 7 bridging into part 2. Plus the second one was more colorful with different zones. I found the Guardian a compelling villain (never did play 9, so I have no clue if he was ever defeated).

I have yet to try Gone Home, is that a not /vr/ game I am thinking of?

Origin games like id games pushed for more and more powerful hardware from PCs, but they were still quite an experience. I was a fan of their releases (not pictured, my Privateer game with speech pack).

gone homo is fucking boring shite, I got so into underworld for a while that I was pressing X to walk backwards when I tried to go back to FPS games.

He's just trolling. Gone Homo is shitty SJW walking sim.

playing Ultima Underworld on my old Pentium 1 at 2am in a dark bedroom was the pinnacle of immersion. I had never had a feeling of "you are there" like that with a game before.

>forget to douse my torch
>rest to regain health
>wake up, torch is burnt out

I swear my bedroom got a little colder.

I played both games for the first time recently and had a blast with both of them. Even 20+ years later I'm still impressed by all the shit they were able to do in 1992.

So I really enjoyed Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and I've been looking to play some more immersive emergent games like it, and People seem to think System Shock 2, Thief 1 and 2, and Deus Ex are a good place to start, but I researched that those were inspired by the two Ultima Underworld games. Is there anywhere I can download these? or would it be better to get them (and System Shock 1) off of GoG?

>> No.3455209

>>3455197
System Shock 1 is better than all those games you just mentioned so I say start there.

Also just pirate them. The GOG version of UU is just a repacked version of DOSbox so no point in buying it.

Thief 1 and 2 are god tier stealth games. Deus Ex is my favorite FPS/RPG of all time.

Those are some of Warren Spector's games. That's why people relate them.

>> No.3455864

Spector had little to do with Thief. IIRC he was unhappy with the way all the other designers were taking it.

>> No.3455880

There's a lot more to them than immersion. Graphics, sound, controls, interactivity, they basically advanced on all fronts.
The games included stealth aspects such as hearing radius even though it's nearly irrelevant

>>3455864
Deus Ex is the only of those games that's really his.
For Underworld he was a coordinator between Blue Sky/Looking Glass and Origin while he also produced Worlds of Ultima and Serpent Isle.

Okay, I pirated UU and downloaded DOSbox but I have no idea what I'm doing with it, and how to get it to work.

>> No.3457919

>>3457903
extract UU in a directory of your choice, make a new shortcut to DOSBox and put the executable of UU as its only parameter.
Like
>"C:\wherever\to\dosbox.exe" "C:\path\to\uu\uw.exe"
Then launch and hope

Can you not rebind the controls?

>> No.3457998

>>3457994
don't know if you can in game, but as a last resort you can use the mapper in dosbox to scramble the keyboard into something you prefer (or map everything to a controller, if you're insane)

>> No.3458001

>>3457903
Stick all your DOS games in one place like c:\games\dos. Run Dosbox and type
>mount c c:\games\dos (or whereever you have them).
From that point it's just like DOS. cd into the directory and run the executable.
>c:
>cd\gamedir
>gamename (or type dir to figure out what exe to run)
Could not be easier.

some people don't like that, or have no prior experience with DOS. When I discovered the shortcut mechanism, I suspected this is easier for beginners, as it's closer to what other emulators do

No offense, but if yiu cant use DOS then you dont belong on this board

>>>/v/

>> No.3458023

>>3458013
people of all ages (18+) belong on this board, if they have an interest in these games. A lot of them have not experienced DOS (or any other 80s or 90s CLI OS) first hand, and it's fine. If they have the nerd interest, they can learn about it (and quickly learn just how limiting DOSBox is in that regard), or they can focus on getting the games they're interested in to run, like on most other emulated systems of the time, in which case the job of DOSBox is not only to make things as straightforward as possible, it also does a really good job at that, by providing a lot of command line parameters you can put in the shortcuts and config file, to hide most of the DOS around the game.

>> No.3458026

>>3458003
There isn't a whole lot of audio in UW. Aside from the intro and ending there's only a few scenes where Garamon appears in your dreams and Tyball's final moments.

It might be more interesting for Ultima 6 which had a full voiceover in English and Japanese for the FM Towns. nuvie supports the English voices but the order for the Japanese ones is different so they don't match up even if you rename them.

How are the Worlds of Ultima games? I saw that they were free on GoG. I tried IV, but I guess I'm casual because I could not get into something that archaic.

Try it again. Also, read the manual, then try it again.

>> No.3458057

>>3458029
Savage Empire is a simplified Ultima 6 with some emphasis on crafting.
Martian Dreams on the other hands is more of an adventure game with limited combat.
Both should be decent for beginners and they're not really connected to the main Ultima storyline.

It might be worth holding out for nuvie to complete the support for them. They've been concentrating on MD and I hope they'll be finished with that soon.
http://nuvie.sourceforge.net/
It allows you to play the games with higher resolution and extra options such as drag&drop or inventory popups.

With the older Ultima games on gog you have get the patches so you get music and better tile graphics.
Or you play xu4 or the SMS port for 4.

>> No.3458062

Savage Empire is fun, and Martian Dreams feels unfinished. Apart from that, they are much more simpler than Ultima VI.
