I was surprised I even got out of the first room.

I really suck at games despite playing retro games since I was a toddler. I haven't played most of these games in 6 to 8 years though so hopefully I could beat them nowadays.

>until I got internet access I had no clue there was more than one world in SMB3 because I couldn't get past the floating block stage (I beat them recently though)
>can't beat any bosses in Mega Man X
>got stuck in the cave levels of Donut Plains in SMW
>couldn't get past Flea in Chrono Trigger
>have yet to beat a classic Sonic game besides Adventure 1

I know that it's meant to be for people who beat the first three scenarios, but why does the game hate your guts so much?

that minefield is just the beginning. this is where the devs concluded that they despise humanity. oh and the cosmic cube as well.

They obsessed with making the game as hard as they could while still keeping it beatable.
I might actually be able to beat it but it might take months and cause little enjoyment.

Jesus fucking christ, I gave up before that monstrosity. I also just looked up the cosmic cube. Why? Seriously, just why?

Probably Mega Man 2.

The whole game wasn't too hard, it was just that bit with those turrets - where you have to use the sticky bombs to get through the walls and destroy the turrets but you have a really limited amount of them and you have to be exactly perfect with your placement. AND you don't even have a reasonable amount of time to dodge their shots.

Shit was fucked up.

Nothing. I've beaten all the so called hard games. Most of them really weren't even that hard. A little patience and planning get you 90% of the way there and not having a motor neuron disease takes you the rest.
I really like how some devs played on those first two. Giving you shit powerups right before a boss, for that kid who had to grab every fucking one. Putting something that would come in really useful later in the game in a place you couldn't return to, for that kid who rushed through without exploring. Making hidden shit just a couple pixels different from regular shit. for that kid who couldn't take the time to look and see the difference.
Makes me wonder if most kids in the 80's were just as much ADHD spazzes as they are today and I just led a sheltered life not knowing any. Or maybe the devs some how knew the future and designed games so future Atari dads could mop the floor with their kids.

The walls stay destroyed if you die.

Also, there's a way to beat the boss without running out of ammo and without dying.

just grind on Brains/S.Brains all day long. I believe they had their exp doubled or tripled for the US. Probably the only advantage given to the player. Then when you are level 40 or so, get a partner and stomp the game.

>> No.3451925

SMB2J is very sadistic. I only completed it on All Stars, which has different physics (although not sure how harder or easier that makes it, I personally didn't notice a difference between SMB1 NES and AS versions).
Now I can't remember if you could continue from the last level you were at if you got a game over screen, or if you had to go back to the first level of that world, I'm pretty sure that's how it is on the original version, can't remember that in All Stars, but they probably made it a bit easier.

It was still pretty hard. I beat all the A,B, etc worlds.

Except the grinding and power leveling works against you when you fight rivals. Their levels scale to yours and they get stronger shit than you because they are still in the original leveling curve. Don't know if Enix USA could not be fucked to keep the rivals in the same learning and stat curve as the player, or if they didn't know your rivals were left with the curve they changed for you.

Contra 3 on hard. I can beat it on normal without even using a continue, but I'm just not autistic enough to beat it on hard.

The worst one is the rival who gets the maximum HP/MP spell. Once he gets that spell, you can't beat him period.

I don't think so. I beat games like OOT perfectly fine and I can play Sonic Advance, but in Sonic 1 I can't even get past Marble Zone anymore.

Right, and most gamers neglect the planning part. When I see other people play games, they throw themselves at the challenge over and over and over trying to brute force it. I did that as a kid, and it literally drove me to tears. I remember having an ass of a time trying to beat any of the robot masters in Mega Man VI, but after a while I realized I could use an E-Tank mid fight.

Alas, they don't make em like they used to. Enjoy this comic.

Friend of mine told his little brother to play Spyro 2 while he was doing something to shut him up. The little shit couldn't do anything without being told what to do. Its fucking tragic how casual games are now.

They are not hard games, and you must have improved in the meantime.

Just start with Chill Penguin in MMX, or Storm Eagle if he proves too difficult and you have the boots upgrade from CP's stage.

I suck at Sonic too, and the only one I finished were the Master System ones.

Yeah you start from the beginning of the world on the Famicom version at least. First played that shit on Wii vc and I would have never finished it if it wasn't for that feature. IMO, beating it as Luigi was much harder.

True, that is the one downside. Therefore you need to have a little planning before hitting the higher levels. I believe there are only 2 forced apprentice encounters -- the one in Patrof castle, and whoever steals the Sky rune. There is also a small chance that the one with the Sky rune will choose to join you instead of fighting. Once you've finished both of those, that's when the power leveling can begin.

I know what you mean though. Do not ever go up against a level 40+ Lux, unless you want to game over every single time from the Laser 3 spell
