At first I thought he was decent enough, but as I watched more of his videos I could tell he was pulling most of his information from Wikipedia as a source, which doesn't really give your viewer any incentive. He's also put out videos that are clearly personal opinion that aren't clearly titled as such which has also turned me off.

I'm really passionate about history in general and I'm masochistic enough to consider researching things in great detail and fact checking as hobbies. For years now, I've wanted to create a channel focused on going into excruciating detail on the kind of shit you don't see on popular channels like his or DidYouKnowMemes, especially in regard to the more obscure, forgotten and neglected topics like arcades and pre-third gen console hardware (spoiler alert: ET and 2600's Pac-Man are not solely responsible for the crash of '83, which was largely a North American phenomenon).

My biggest obstacles are having an 8 year old toaster that can't handle video editing and the fact that I'm a fat chick and I'd rather not attract either the "THICC!" or the "proud gurlz of size tumblrette" crowd.

My Life in Gaming. Its basically them documenting their own personal stories of trying to get the best video quality, along with honest impressions of games.

Maybe it's just me, but in this age of widespread information, I think it's pretty hard to make these kind of videos without coming off as pretentious or condescending.

Something about the way they present this information, that has been regurgitated over 1,000 times by everyone in the hobby or that I could find with a 2min. google search, as some sort of professional research, ticks me off.

Seriously, how many more times do we need to hear about Doki Doki Panic, the whole SNES CD fiasco and everything that it gave birth to, the story behind unlicensed NES games, Miyamoto talking shit about DKC, how Final Fantasy was supposed to be the company's last game, etc,etc. It's like every time some new eceleb is born they have this checklist of factoids they HAVE to go through in their videos one way or another.

Props to those that do REAL research though, going as far as tracking down game programmers and such, but can't remember anyone that does that in recent memory besides Game Trailer's short lived Pop-fiction.

It is out there. I've only watched one episode, but there's that devs play series. Nintendoplayer.com also does interviews and such of developers in terms of prototype finds.

I think a big problem is that a lot of game people from the older games are Japanese making it difficult for westerners to get in touch with. Some of course may have used pseudonyms, don't have a Web presence, or are still involved in the games industry and as a result might be hesitant to divulge too much info to random internet folks.

Well they do actually play modern games and own modern systems as they mention new games in their vids sometimes, but they said many times that they are retro at heart just like most of this board I'd imagine. Also the short reviews is a drawback of their show's structure. I can't imagine them doing detailed reviews of so many games for a system they are reviewing. I liked his videos well enough, even if they were mostly collections of fact that have been well documented many times over. I stopped watching when he started trying to make a bunch of different video types at once--I guess he figured his historian gimmick wasn't bringing in enough subscribers, so he started doing the let's plays and the My Opinion Here videos every other Youtube gamer does.

I recently found this Gaijillionaire guy, and think he shows some potential. At first I thought it would be another "DID YOU KNOW THAT MARIO 2 WAS ORIGINALLY A GAME CALLED DOKI DOKI PANIC?!" video, but it turned out to be pretty interesting. It talks about how the game was actually a tie in to a gigantic festival in Japan, and gives the history on it.

His videos do have problems though, they're technically pretty bad both audio and video wise but they are getting better. He can sometimes get mildly cringey. Still, who the fuck else would talk at length about Arcanum and the First two System Shock games?

I highly recommend all three.

A historian is an academic and operates under protocols dictated by the profession. He is not a historian. Basically, he just rephrases what is already available on wikipedia or other sites and pages and presents the idea or implication as his own effort. This is called plagiarism.

When he does get into historical analysis, his biases betray his incompetence. He is a fanboy collector who can't read and understand Japanese primary sources. Because of this, he relies on secondary and worse sources that he agrees with. At best, he's just some rando who is speculating about his favorite thing from something that someone who heard from someone else that someone did something about another person. This is not historical analysis at all.

None of his skits were remotely funny, he added nothing to any Completionist video, he clearly understood very little about most of the games covered, and he was just overall cringey.
