I know you guys get real sick of the hype on EarthBound, however, I'm just curious on how/how much did you get your cart for. Is it worth the 200 tag? Stories of acquiring a plus.

>> No.343498

Depends on how much disposable income you have. 200 bucks is a shitload of money, and even though it's a ten out of ten game, I'd never buy it for that much.

Believe or not, I bought it when it came out. The big box was up on the rental shelf at Blockbuster, pretty hard not to notice it. I already had played a few SNES rpgs and it looked fuckin neato. I was right. Saved up my lawnmowing money and bought one for $50 a couple of months later.

I sold it on ebay in maybe 2002(?) or so for around $100, whenever it was that the Starman website starting getting popular.

I picked up another CIB copy with guidebook in a trade with another collector maybe five or six years ago. I traded him Tengen Tetris for Earthbound and some cash.

It's overhyped but that doesn't erase the great experience I had first playing the game and not knowing a damn thing about it. I experienced that final battle not knowing that "Pray" was going to work. Used it as a final option after Jeff and Poo were dead and after a couple times, when it starts doing the cutscenes... I get shivers thinking about how holy shit of a moment that was. And then you get to walk Paula home with everyone saying thanks. Still one of the best endings of any game ever.

Plus the soundtrack is totally god tier.

Don't buy any game at over 100, over 60 really. I've been collecting games for a long time now and the prices on good games are always artificially inflated. It's "demand" but don't accept the price, its already ruined the market enough by people confirming the game's worth by spending 100+ dollars on it. Tell sellers to fuck themselves. A lot of the shit that people want (like earthbound, snatcher, dracula x) aren't even uncommon. Just in high demand once people understood they were good games.

Exactly what this guy said. There's a few things I've paid around and above $50 for, but it was because I had to go through a Japanese auction escrow type service for some obscure PS1 and Famicom games on Yahoo JP auctions.

Everything has been ruined now by ebay and dipshits who actually pay >$100 for Ikaruga or Panzer Dragoon Saga or whatever. You can't even find stuff in resale shops or flea markets anymore because every fuckin dum-dum thinks any old game is $$$.

Emulate and wait until you find a deal on the games you want.

>> No.344838

Back in late 2000, I bought a used copy at Gamestop for $35 with a somewhat beatup box and player's guide. The guide was still usuable, just the very last page had about 1/6 of the corner tore out. A few years later, I bought a near-mint, fully complete copy of the game for just over $100. Came with the cart, the guide, the box, the cardboard filler, the little plastic bag the cart came in, all the ads and warning books, etc.

Honestly if it were me I wouldn't pay more than $20 for the cart, $40-$50 for the cart+guide+box, or $100 for a complete copy of the game all in great condition.

Well Capitalism and ecomonics are just working naturally, the real problem is the nature of the collection community itself. When you want to watch a movie you just buy it on iTunes or whatever is easiest, you don't concern yourself tracking down some out-of-print DVD unless it has rare footage on it. But with Retro games many people would rather have the original than downloading off Virtual Console or PSN/XBLA, and those carts aren't getting made any more so of course supply only goes down while more people start gaming and demand goes up.

I think you are far overestimating the effect people like us with taste have on the market.

Besides, Xenoblade was an order only game. They made copies for people who ordered it online or preordered at GameStop, no more. To make several thousand more units just to sell to the stragglers who would buy it later on would have been absurdly wasteful.

Earthbound's case is a little bit different, since a lot of the buyers are only buying the SNES cart out of necessity. Also, when prices are this high, many of them would rather download the VC version.

Whatever the case, it will cause panic amongst many sellers, which will drive the price down substantially.

Pirating video games isn't legal, but I can't think of a single case that someone got put in jail for downloading them. The only games people actually care about punishing pirates for are the AAA new releases like Mass Effect and Call of Duty, and no one here gives a shit about those anyway.

I said it's a niche market, so yeah, it's small but significant. They (we?) are the kind of people who will buy these games.

With Xenoblade, it was already translated for PAL. All they had to do was release a few thousand physical copies for US NTSC. The whole ordering thing was a retarded way to sell the game. If they had actually put the game in stores and done a tiny bit of marketing, a bunch of people who had a Wii (there are lots of them) and who play RPGs on other systems (check) would've picked it up.

I bought mine around 2000 at a blockbuster for like $5. There was also a copy of Final Fight Guy and, I think, that one rare Clay Fighter game sitting right next to it, but I didn't buy those because I was a very poor 13 year old who didn't even have enough money to make a proper Pokemon deck.

I know there's a lot of people who do repro carts of other games. EB is going for ~250 right now, I'm surprised people haven't started doing it. A shitty sports game donor cart is only a couple dollars, there seems like a lot of profit to be made there.

i was fortunate enough to get mine for free, along with all the best SNES RPG's from a great friend. when he heard I collected retro games, he gave me Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, FF3, mystic quest, EarthBound, and a few other random games. the SNES is the only system i don't just buy any games for, I ONLY buy A+ gold titles, or favorites, so, my SNES collection is all god tier grade A stuff

They aren't going to give it to us for thirty cents regardless of whether they give it to us or not. If they ever decide to sell us EB on the VC, they'll do it at full price. Not like $8 is all that much.

Although, I wonder how many people would go out and buy a Wii U just to get Earthbound on the Virtual Console.

So a franchise of used electronics places has two stores with Earthbound in them in my area. $200 for each one, but apparently they are both in box. Really am tempted to buy one, but I don't want the game for collecting I want to play it.

Was talking to a person who worked at another of the stores to find out if there were any Earthbounds in the area (not one of the two with the games) and we ended talking about how ridiculous the price has gotten for the game, and how it is a shame that people who actually want to play the game can't get it for a decent price.

Having the cart is nice and all, but seriously just emulate it if you want to play it. SNES emulation is pretty much perfect at this point. If you don't want to play on a computer, there are SNES emulators for every console out there. It is incredibly easy to do on the Wii and Xbox, I don't own a PS3 so I can't vouch for that. Playing it on a emulator, sitting on the couch with a controller in your hand -- it is exactly the same experience as playing the cart.

Except you're saving yourself >$200.

Like >>354182 says, at a certain point your non-gaming life starts to creep in. I'm married, have a house, a job, a dog, no kids (yet). I like my collection and all, but it has less value to me. Might as well let some of it go, someone else can enjoy it, I can have some money to buy more games I'll never play.

There's tons of games I will never get rid of because of emotional attachment. Like going through my games and seeing Tekken 2 and remembering all the good times I had with my best friend during college, or my Umihara Kawase Shun and thinking of the summer I spent playing that with my girlfriend at the time. But eventually you can retain the memories without the objects themselves.
