System shock 2 is on wikipedia's front page!

The many signs to us extra sweetly today!

Bah, wasn't it lame how they forced you to take the really scummy side?

Check out rebirth/shtup!

The grind-mod may also be some people's cup of tea, what with how the RPG features were a little short, besides just the aforementioned lack of multiple paths. It made all upgrades something like 4 times as expensive but let you find cyber modules randomly.

There's all sorts of whatever other mods out there too by now.

I love SS2, but I think SS1 is a much better game.

With the last years' improvements (mouselook and whatnot), or the clunky original running on its contemporary hardware (which was being brought to its knees basically no matter what if you tried to go beyond a 320x200 resolution)?

>> No.3419237

>SHISUTEMU SHOKKU TOO

Too bad that Deck 5 is the game's pinnacle and it all goes downhill from there (specifically, the Rickenbacker is an unpolished/rushed-feeling clusterfuck, even its deck/pod/whatever designations are an inconsistent mess).

>> No.3419346

>>3419237
Yeah, it was said to be unfinished. The mixup between cargo bay A and shuttle bay A was annoying. I suppose the Rickenbacker should have had some sort of distinctive military aesthetic? The exotic weapons were also damn lame, along with the higher tier psi powers being rather unappealing.

After 17 years of being told how good it is, I finally managed to be arsed to play this game through last week.

It was OK.

I want to try out SS1 but I have a feeling it'd be a similar exp. only with a different shift in genre and better level design.

>> No.3419496

>>3419437
Nah it's not. There are no RPG elements in 1 and it's not horror based like 2 is. It's very different in comparison.

>> No.3419540

I guess it's a testament to the game's quality that I could enjoy it as much as I did despite unbalanced gameplay mechanics, stiff combat, unnecessary RPG elements, horror-destroying action techno music, very uneven voice acting, etc.

The sci-fi nerd in me finds the hilariously unlikely premise almost unforgivable, though. Specifically talking about the plot thread linking it to the first game.

>horror-destroying action techno music

I actually set the music volume level almost all the way down so it was still somewhat audible but just barely so. Having it run loud would imho destroy the atmosphere the game was apparently otherwise attempting to build (which you aptly pointed out, if I understood you correctly).

>The sci-fi nerd in me finds the hilariously unlikely premise almost unforgivable, though. Specifically talking about the plot thread linking it to the first game.

Books have best plots, because they have nothing to make up for a bad plot. Movies have worse plots, because they have a lot of in-your-face presentation to make up for it. Games have worst plots, because the have all that movies have to make up for it and then some, plus being interactive.

>> No.3419576

Who else meddled with the config to reduce the weapon deterioration to more sensible levels (or did you enjoy for your weapons to fall apart very soon, in addition to the big scarcity of ammo making you fight all kinds of enemies with a wrench)?

>> No.3419609

>>3419565
The main problem I have with the game's plot is the involvement of SHODAN. While the mid-game twist of her having been pulling your strings all along was probably novel back then, most of the details of her involvement are pretty badly thought out.

It is my understanding that this is a result of the game being almost-forcibly shoved into the System Shock series (since the license was available at the time), even though it was originally written as its own thing.

>> No.3419704

>>3419609
>even though it was originally written as its own thing.

Was it? So Ken Levine thought up the original stuff first, and only later decided to effectively step into Warren Spector's shoes?

>> No.3419716

From hinsight, SHODAN's voice seems very unrealistic as she commands conveying all kinds of human emotion and subtle tone changes into it yes stutters as if its buffer was underrunning constantly. Valve's GlaDOS is the opposite (never stutters pointlessly, but pronounces things awkwardly and "machine-like) and comes across much more convincing for an AI as a result.

Not me. Instead I used the laser pistol only on overcharge mode, cause they wore out the same, and also carried two of them, and rapidly switched between them, cause why wouldn't you do that with slow cycling handguns?

And I used the wrench, laser rapier and crystal shard.

And of course I picked out all the slugs from the hybrids too.

I never had an ammo problem. I start with the wrench, make use of the pistol for a short while, then usually go full laser pistol unless I'm up against heavy mech/armor, then I use pistol, or shotgun if I have one functional by then.

Usually carry 2 laser pistols and recharge regularly, save anti-personal shotgun ammo and toss the rest, save the armor-piercing pistol/rifle ammo and toss the rest. I carry a nade launcher, shotgun, rifle, and two laser pistols. I use the lasers for most everything, use the shotgun for spiders, nades for biggun's, and the rifle for the final area. If you are really worried about running low on ammo, you can always get a recycler and recycle damn near everything you won't or can't use, then buy a ton of ammo.

As for falling apart, I always had plenty of nanites for maintenance tools, and with 2 points or more dumped into maintenance you can keep your main weapon in good shape after the initial hump.

>Easier said than done when playing on impossible
Why would that be? Enemy HP doesn't change between the difficulties.
>save scumming
Why would you even need to do that? Just save when you enter a new floor.

Stop triggering alerts and stop trying to go head-to-head with zombies and you'll stop dying. Then you won't need to save-scum or modify the game to make it easier.

>>3420786
Because the laser pistols handle everything for me, and I only bother saving the anti-personal shells for the body of the many.

The game auto-saves on load transition, nerd. You would know that if you didn't save scum.

Always found the depictions of SHODAN in the first game much more interesting than that one static image that's plastered over the second game. Is there a rip of the face used in the intro cutscene?
