Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, this game keeps amazing me and I'm only 2-3hours in.

It's a great FPS game with very creative level design, that is the perfect middle ground between objective based missions, "realistic" environments and Doom-like conceptual design.

The story is just right, just how I like it in a game, as it creates a cohesive piece while never getting.

On top of that, the games dates from 1997, last quarter of the year, but still. Quite a few 2.5D FPS were still being released in 1998, but technically speaking this game is miles ahead Quake.

How did I miss on a gem like this for so long?
Underrated FPS games thread I suppose

I'm running it Win7.
I'm using the Steam version and it ran perfectly without having to install any mod or anything. I think it's the same for the GOG version.

Apparently it used to be broken but they fixed it.

Only thing I had trouble with was fiddling with the settings, I have to play in software mode or else I get terrible latency and weird mouse control. I'm fine with that though as I don't like the smoothed out look of early 3D acceleration.

Also it has one of the best boss fights, conceptually, anyhow.

GOG version runs on windows 8 no mods but will occasionally crash back to desktop, But otherwise very playable.

Sadly no 3d acceleration right out of the box.

Still worth the effort though.
Still a damn good FPS and star wars game.

Shame it'll be unplayable for future generations...

You need to calm yourself here. I don't know what you're trying to prove but throwing insults only make you look more stupid.

Rides Again is the very definition of a sequel.
It's standalone and it takes place RIGHT after the first game.
If it's an "expansion pack" than so are Doom II and Megaman 3 to 6.

As for NAM and WWII GI, they are standalone commercial games, which is like the definition of... well, a game. That's like saying Heretic or Strife are "just shitty Doom mods".

Rides Again is very underrated. I'll give you that, most people think it's an add-on, which shows how underrated the game is. Most played stopped at the first Redneck Rampage, but Rides Again fixes most flaws of the original, while expanding on it and have some insane level design.

The game starts slow and there is still a little key and switch hunting, though nothing near as bad as in the original, but later on it has some of the most technically advanced level design I've seen in any commercial Build game.

For instance, everyone talks about Shadow Warrior's or Blood's "room over room", but Rides Again has it too (another proof that it's not just "an expansion pack" as improvements on the engine side were made) and noone ever talked about it.

Funny thing, I was just discussing Redline with a friend and we were talking about completely different games. There's some freeware race game with the same name apparently. But yeah, that game was great, but I tried replaying the Gog version the other day and quit in frustration. Didn't age too well, or I'm just shit at old fps nowadays.
I've always been interested in Exhumed though, is it worth picking up still?

Exhumed/Powerslave is two games.

There is the console version, which also got a fan remake on PC with the EX version, which is like a first person adventure platformer FPS. Think of Metroid Prime except it's still cut between levels.

Then there is the PC version, which runs under Build. IMO that one is very underrated. Yes, it runs on an older version of Build, gameplay is good but nothing spectacular, but if you ask me it has great atmosphere and some of the best Doom-style level design I've ever seen.

Realms of the Haunting.

Although I approve of your list so far

NAM.... idk its cool and pretty accurate rendition of combat in vietnam. Its just that combat in vietnam wasn't very fun, and you die a lot by traps and random shit you can't control. Not really great game design, even if its pretty realistic for the period.

I would say Doom64 is pretty underrated too

I was talking about NAM for another reason. Ilike both NAM and WW2 GI, at least on the lowest difficulty, but I admit that's because I'm a sucker for the Build engine. They're not games I'd recommend to anyone.

>>3409612
I beat the main game and I've started playing MotS now. I'm in the middle of the 2nd level and so far I like it a lot, it's more challenging that's for sure and it has some cool new stuff. Level design is perhaps less crazy so far, funnily enough it reminds me of JDK2 a lot, but I love JDK2.
My main complaint so far is how dark that Asteroid level is. Holy shit I'm always running low on light battery and my eyes are in pain.

Do you know what this is? Looks like a gun but the game won't let me pick it up. I also found some ammo I never saw before... I saw a 2nd one after too.

Anyway MotS doesn't have that good of a story, I'm a little disappointed. I see what you mean with the level design but I think there is definitely quality in there, and some crazy stuff here and there too. Only thing I don't like so far is that I got stuck a few times because the devs just LOVE to hide vents that you have to go through, in the darkest places.
