Hey everyone, I've just been getting into the Umihara Kawase series and I wanted to have a general discussion thread. Does anyone have any tips for how to get good at the games? The grapple mechanics are really cool but also really tough.

Do you guys know that old /co/ comic where the /co/fags would find a waifu and would all hover around her, but then some new waifu appears and everyone would just flock to the new one and left the other old behind and alone. And then find a newer one, etc ad infinitum

Well I feel like Umi was /vr/'s first and now everyone is forgetting her and going towards Mail from Popful Mail. I wonder who's going to be the third one, maybe Eriko from Yu-No.

They probably wouldn't be very cool if they were made easier, as it would dumb down the gameplay.
Anyway, I have been playing the original a bit more lately, it is tough but it doesn't even take very long to get the grapple mechanic down to a point where you can easily swing across a the bottom of platforms

It's so rewarding when you try a complicated swing and it works exactly how you want it.

I was reading this interview from the creator.
http://www.usgamer.net/articles/indie-before-it-was-cool-the-umihara-kawase-story
Then I come across this part:
>Despite the intricacy of Umihara Kawase's design, Sakai feels his work went largely unnoticed. "A group of core fans and people who were interested in programming really praised the game," he recollects with evident disappointment. "But I feel like, in general, there weren’t that many people out there who noticed the physics."

I feel a bit disappointed and seeing the steam sales just confirms that these games are not popular at all.
I doubt it will ever change, I doubt skill-based games like these will ever become popular.
Not that I want Umihara Kawase to be the next big hit, just a bit more love would be nice, a bit more attention from other parts of the gaming community and maybe a little more certainty about the game's future.
From a technical standpoint, surely there are enough possibilities for a continuation.

Yeah I don't honestly expect this series to become the next big thing anytime soon, but after 20 years I would expect to gather a little bit of a niche market. Right now it's beyond niche or cult following, no matter how you look at it, these are very small numbers.

I was honestly expecting for steam players to embrace it way more than this, specially when it got some buzz in the news when they pulled the games from steam and then degica reinstated them.

Nothing new here. Look at the money and entrants in fighting games. The numbers pale in comparison to League. It's always been this way and that will never change. Games that require time to get the full potential out of just can't be as popular as easier, just as fun, games.

The art style and environment in Densen are a perfect match with Umihara's surreal urban japanese setting. I agree about the gameplay which looks very hard to develop a game around. I see that the girl has some freedom of movement but she needs to stay on-rails to line up with the electric wires. Like Umihara it would have been focused on the unique controls which look very fun like a kawaii rollercoaster ride. I would love to play it someday or at least see better video.

Significantly higher if we send him a card or something themed around it.

Studio Saizensen (Kondo + Sakai's company) has their address publicly on the internet, so it shouldn't be too hard. I also know Japanese (and have many native speaker friends) so I can translate a message if needed.

That would be a super good image for the front of the card, by the way.

I'm thinking nothing too big or extravagant, just something nice and full of love.

Possible ways to contribute:
>Write something nice about your experience with UK, or just something nice in general
>Draw a cute little sketch about Den-Sen/Umihara
>If you have any questions you wanted to ask to the creators, post them generally here.

I was thinking it'd be a small, few-page post-card that you can open up, has some nice pictures and messages, and then a short piece of writing at the end that summarizes our questions or general words of thanks. Of course, let's try not to ask more than a couple of questions. Let's not make things hard on them.

I think a theme that they'd appreciate is fans from outside of Japan.

How about mixing some /int/ into it and draw your country's version of Umihara? Cute girl, fishing pole, walking food, maybe some pieces of your local countryside and nostalgia to past decades, you know. Bullshit
people who want to play mario and zelda don't download entire romsets. they download mario and zelda.

people who download romsets do try new stuff from time to time. most of it? doubtful. all of it? nah. but the chances of someone playing something new to then instead of "mario and zelda" is way bigger than whatever you think it is

I thought each game had a different protagonist. With the Sayonara release, I thought they changed to a female character to cash in on "anime waifu" market. I never really looked that close at the PS cover. Also, I'm posting on 4-chan so I assumed it was the usual horridness of "same but female" art, like how rule 34 makes female characters have penises. I ... am a well adjusted person, like the rest of 4chan. Believe it or not, it was the constant art on these Umihara Kawase threads and I started thinking "damn, there are a lot of pictures of the main character with big breastuses ... oh my gawd, I think the main character IS a girl" and then I took the PS game out (to make that picture) and I did see.

I almost never hear about game emulation. for one, games journalists are all but forbidden to mention it. the biggest venue for spreading word about obscure games, Youtube, is completely supine when it comes to takedown requests by rights holders. And Nintendo is fast and sloppy with the ban hammer.

Thirdly, the number of people who have a computer is probably dropping, as most of the functionality is covered by owning a game system and a smart phone. Emulation works on neither of these, unless you know about jailbreaking. Most people don't. Again, legal grey area squashed by industry gatekeepers acting like jealous husbands.
