Lynx is one option, runs natively on DOS too, the other way is to telnet a *nix box and use a CLI browser (again Lynx being one option) on there.

There's a anon around here in /vr/ and /g/ who is working on a telnet 4chan API client that makes 4chan into something like a BBS, can't wait to hear from him again.

Do you have a free ISA slot?
What are we dealing with? 8088 or newer?

The Etherlink III 16-bit ISA card works fine in the 8-bit slot and drivers support 8088. No need for anything else (except a DOS TCP stack), just connect the RJ45 cable to your router and boom.

486 with W95/DOS 7, and yes I think I have more than a free ISA slot.

What do you mean by DOS TCP stack? Some background stuff to load into conventional memory? By the way thanks for helping me.

If you use DOS then you need this
http://www.brutman.com/mTCP/

486? Then you have 16-bit ISA slots, just look on eBay for a 16-bit ISA ethernet card with an RJ45 connector.
Any one should work fine. Searching for the DOS packet driver might be a little tricky but nothing more than a few minutes in Google.

Under Windows 95 you just need to install the driver and under network settings just add the TCP protocol and then you can fire up something like Netscape.

Gotcha, never really hit my mind that there were actual ISA Ethernet cards for some reason. Do I need special cables or I can go as far as 1000base-t ones?

>DOS packet driver
As in the one that works for that specific card?

>Under Windows 95 you just need to install the driver and under network settings just add the TCP protocol and then you can fire up something like Netscape.

I really wanted to try IE 3.0, but I'm scared it won't be able to hold modern internet without crashing every couple minutes or just straight refusing to load pages due to their high amounts of data. That's why I leaned towards DOS browsers, they sound like they would be more stable and know which bloaty code to scratch to maximize performance.

>> No.3393465

A normal CAT5 or 6 cable will do, but the speed is limited by the card and not the cable.

>As in the one that works for that specific card?
Yes, it's a driver for the specific card

>I really wanted to try IE 3.0
It will just look weird because it does not support JS and CSS, probably will load fine.
DOS will still be faster with something like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arachne_(web_browser)

Perfect, thank you. I was only puzzled because I was instructed not to use modern cables on older hardware because it might fry it.

>It will just look weird because it does not support JS and CSS, probably will load fine

Since most of the bloat is JS and CSS anyway does that mean the browser discards what it cannot interpret thus not killing the system RAM? I guess I will find out whenever I get the setup working.

Can I ask a few other things? Just because this is sounding so cool:

1)I seriously need to make a backup of the HDD, is there W95 LAN file sharing software that is XP compatible?
2)Are there Serial/COM emulators and IPX drivers for DOS that use the ethernet port instead? The same way I'm supposed to set up TCP packets exchange. That will seriously blow my mind, being able to play DOS games on my 486 with other people running DOSBox.

>Since most of the bloat is JS and CSS anyway does that mean the browser discards what it cannot interpret thus not killing the system RAM? I guess I will find out whenever I get the setup working.
Yes, but depending on RAM big threads can still load slowly even on Arachne, but it worked for my 486.

>1)I seriously need to make a backup of the HDD, is there W95 LAN file sharing software that is XP compatible?
It is, even works up to Windows 10 or Mac OS X or Linux, you need Microsoft Network Client 3.0 for DOS and you can mount network shares as drives in DOS.
It's better to just run the FTP server from mTCP and something like FileZilla on your main PC and just copy everything off the 486 or onto. But you can use the Microsoft file sharing to run things over the network if you have a small hard drive.

Another way is just to get a cheap USB-ATA adapter and directly connect the old drive to a newer computer, but this way might be more hassle if your system is all nicely set up and hard to get open.

>2)Are there Serial/COM emulators and IPX drivers for DOS that use the ethernet port instead? The same way I'm supposed to set up TCP packets exchange. That will seriously blow my mind, being able to play DOS games on my 486 with other people running DOSBox.

Yes, IPX works fine but I don't think DOS had any serial-over-ethernet software but I'm not sure, most games have an IPX option anyways.
There are USB serial adapters too for newer machines that would let you use the serial port of the 486 together with a newer machine.

I'll look into it. I only have an old PC linker which probably used the parallel port but using a microsoft DOS client to load network shares kinda sounds like forbidden magic.

>It's better to just run the FTP server from mTCP and something like FileZilla on your main PC and just copy everything off the 486 or onto.

FTP server programs are also a good solution.

>Another way is just to get a cheap USB-ATA adapter and directly connect the old drive to a newer computer

Nah, I wouldn't trust myself carrying 20+ years old hardware around.

>most games have an IPX option anyways.

I remember reading most games used optimized routines for network modes to minimize lag, while the serial option, due to his local and faster nature meant it was more robust and reliable so it would get less sync errors while preserving smooth gameplay (not like I'm going to play with more than 1 person, unless I luck out). But I'll take what I can get.

>There are USB serial adapters too for newer machines that would let you use the serial port of the 486 together

You mean like dongles? That's also a thing I was looking into, but alas I'm pretty ignorant about this stuff and I wouldn't want to waste money.

Thanks, by the way. You've been of tremendous help. I may make a new thread when I get all of this working, or just post about it in the retro computer general.

You can't ever completely disable windows 10 telemetry.
Microsoft is actively pushing towards making this ever harder to do as well - see the recent group policy change for example.
Even if you yourself are not concerned about the data collection, you still expose information about your friends and family via Microsoft's aggressive surveillance methods.
You should not use, support or endorse this operating system.

The spyware has been backported to Windows 7 and 8.1 as well.
You can much more easily remove it though - all it takes is uninstalling the related updates.
You can find out which via a quick google search for 'telemetry updates for windows 7 and 8.1', and then hiding them in Windows Update.
Don't forget to check for these every month or so, as Microsoft can push out new updates anytime that can reinstall the spyware.
