Aeon Genesis released a patch that lets you play the game while keeping the Kotodama system unchanged, the previous ones had to mess with the system since they needed to double the character slots needed to type a spell since the japanese syllabic system allows up to two letters in one character slot and the Kotodama mechanic was conceived around a syllabic system instead of one using just single sounds/letter.
It was actually a very interesting and ambitious hack mind you, but it fucked the original mechanic into oblivion, the new patch apparently restores the original system.

I played it in Japanese and then played the first patched version out of curiosity years ago, so I don't know how how they worked around the problem with the new patch.
You really should learn japanese though, their translations, like 90% of any translation is pretty lifeless and not really true to the original in some parts, some character have been given pretty weird accents that either weren't there or just don't fit the original character's speech pattern, especially in Surlent's route, most of his cast suffers greatly from that.

That's not even legal, it was just a rumor that circulated on the old net. In some instances it's not even legal to rip your own roms. But the only people in position to challenge it are nintendo, they have to money, and they are the most likely to prove damages with them re-releasing games on the VC. Even then, they're not going to get nearly as much money as they'll have to spend in courts, and the PR blow would be the final nail in their coffin.
