ITT: We post old/recent consoles in trash conditions that we restored/fixed/saved/cleaned

Here's mine.
Some old man was selling this N64 with a bunch of great games. Oot, MM, Banjo Kazooie and Tooie. The owner didn't want to sell the games apart so i bought the bundle for 50$.

But the console was fucking garbage. It sounded like a maraca when i moved it. I opened it up, and heres the surprise...

So i opened it up and a fucking colony of cockroaches (all dead) was the reason the console sounded like a maraca. Holy shit, i've never seen this shit. I could just throw the N64 to the trash and buy another one in good condition, but i wanted to give it a try.

After an hour under alcohol (drowned the motherboard in 98% alcohol and then cleaned it with a brush) The motherboard was like new (it had some rust because i suppose the console was not in use for a while). Now i could eat on it.

not bad! the paintjob looks a little patchy but still.

here's a before/after of a filth-encrusted genesis 1 i got.

pics dont do it justice. this thing was foul. it actually smelled bad and stuck to your fingers like it had been dunked in something. the on/off and volume made the nastiest grindy feeling when you pushed them too.

anyway, took it apart, internals were fine. soaked, scrubbed, and waxed the plastic. put it all back together. now it looks almost factory-new.

I just reflowed the solder on an original game boy I just picked up at a garage sale. Funny story too, there was a dr Mario cart a gbc and a gb in a Ziploc. We agreed to a price and I continued to look around. While I wasn't looking that enormous fat fucking whale took the dr Mario cart out of the bag and I didn't notice until I was long gone. Can I do the same with a SNES? It has something inside and it's really giving me the nerves.

I haven't used it in two months, maybe more. So it shouldn't have any "leftover" electricity.

And does it have to be strictly 98% alcohol? Can't I use Isopropyl (~90%)?

I run a used game store, and I'll tell you I've seen some shit. This is one of my favourites.
>guy enters my store with a disgusting looking duffel bag
>he asks if we buy old games
>we sure do!
>he puts the duffel bag on the counter
>I open it up and start going through it
>inside there is a SNES and a handfull of boxes games
>My fingers make contact with the system and suddenly it feels like I just put my hand in half dried glue
>this smell of this guy and the bag hit me
>he smells like somebody made a stew out of cigarette buts, used jock straps, and mouldy bacon
>I resist the urge to vomit
>I look at the system it has a 1/8th inch thick layer of this horrible brown/yellow goo mixed with dust.
>I move over to my testing area, it works fine
>my hands are now covered in this horrifying goo
>i start checking out the games
>DKC1,2,3, Mario All Stars, and Mario world.
>I start to open DKC1.
>The color on the boxes it totally gone, replaced with a sick yellow
>the box feels oddly moist
>what the fuck?
>The box starts to fall apart
>He smells so bad I don't know how much longer I can take it
>I don't bother checking the rest of the games or controllers
>I give him 20 bucks for it
>none of the boxes are salvageable, they're literally falling apart
>The only system I've ever totally strip cleaned
>used the dishwasher in the backroom that we never use to clean the non electronic parts.
>The system after intense cleaning still smells like an ash tray.

Turns out the guy got it when it all came out, lived in the same apartment since the 80's and was an extremely heavy smoker. So those games and that system were stewing in 20+ years of smoke. It was basically SNES jerky that point.

Oh yeah. The worst are people who have no idea what they're looking for, but won't admit it.
>Woman comes in my store
>professionally dressed
>I ask her if I can help her find anything
>She says "I'm looking for a specific game for my son that he lost"
>She tells me the title of the game
>Super Mario War Lord 4
>whut
>I ask her what system it's for she says Game Boy Advance
>Alright so I start thinking what she could possibly be looking for, Super Mario Advance 4, Game and Watch Gallery 4
>I say "I don't think there are any games called that" And I start listing likely ones she might be confusing
>She looks at me like I'm crazy, and with a super condescending voice she repeats herself "No, I'm pretty sure it was Super Mario War Lord 4"
>I tell her I don't have a copy and I've never heard of it.
>She looks at me like I'm retarded.
>Suddenly guy walks in the store, comes up to her and asks "do they have it"
>She says no
>The guy says "There it is, that's the one he wants"
>He's pointing to a copy of Wario Land 4 in my GBA cabinet.
>The woman asks to buy it.
>Not even a shred of shame in her demeanour, like that entire retarded conversation never even happened.
>Why was the guy who actually knew what they were looking for waiting in a car outside?

In retrospect, I feel a little stupid for not thinking of Wario Land 4 at the time. It's far from the only time someone doubled down on being painfully wrong though.

It's not even important electronics, it's sole purpose was to make money for nintendo. The original kidney dialysis machine should be preserved, it's purpose was to make money and save lives or at least improve the quality of life. It's existence meant something.

I'm waiting for a bowflex to be thrown into a museum dedicated to marvels of mechanical engineering.

I'm not even trying to knock the n64, but if every single one just disappeared off the face of the planet it's not going to prevent any lives from continuing.
