Everybody and I mean everybody praises Ridge Racer Type 4 because it's pure kino, but I just want to put in good word for Rage Racer as well due to its career structure not found in Type 4, also cool courses and music.

People also praise Wipeouts so I am going to recommend Rollcage Stage II along with it.

Moto Racer 2 is my favorite /vr/ motorcycle racer but the framerate is not as good as PC. Road Rash, the 32-bit remake with the kick ass midi, muh rusty cage and hilarious FMV. ESPN Extreme Games aka 1Xtreme is a Road Rash clone with rollerblades, skateboards, street luge and mountain bikes. Seems shovelware quality but it's the same kind of unintended humor as Road Rash.

Lego Racer is amazing but I personally greatly prefer the PC version out of any console version due to 60 fps and editor controls.

Jet Moto because it's awesome and it's got great SingleTrac comic book art (classic Twisted Metal).

Colin McRae Rally 2.0 is cool.

Crash Team Racing is a classic. Speed Punks for another decent kart racer.

Need For Speed, despite its bad rep in the modern days, is actually amazing back in that era of Electronic Arts. NFS3 Hot Pursuit, NFS4 High Stakes, NFS5 Porsche Unleashed. They're slightly different than the PC counter parts but still good.

>I am going to recommend Rollcage Stage II along with it
in another thread elsewhere just recently someone who knows their shit also suggested Rollcage (1). Stage II supposedly went a bit overboard with some balancing

>Need For Speed, despite its bad rep in the modern days
Anybody who knows anything about NFS knows that the series consists of three distinct parts. The first is the quality luxury car racing game, up to NFS 6. Then comes the ricer period, with Underground, Most Wanted, Undercover. Then comes the we-don't-know-what-the-fuck-we're-doing period, where every single game in the series is wildly genre hopping and utterly lifeless

Most /vr/ Ridge Racer games are very arcade in a Daytona sense where you just pick a car and track and repeat until you get bored. Luckily with Ridge Racer Type 4, they tried to push the arcade single player experience forward in the same sense where some fighting games have a polished arcade mode. Go get RRT4, start Grand Prix mode, pick your team (difficulty), your manufacturer (pick Grip for beginner), then the game will carry you through every track in the game with lite story intermissions and promotions towards new cars. Basically it's a very automated play experience that needs no menu or any bullshit. Amazing music, amazing scenery and course layouts, male announcer voice will keep you company. It doesn't take too much of your time to reach the ending, it's very much a one sitting game with a ton of replay value.

Do NOT skip the intro FMV.

sorry, I just don't see any interest. I know I'm odd in that regard. Skipped a bunch of "major" games that way. If I want a career, High Stakes is the game I go to. Best career mode ever, in any racing game.

might as well just play a bit of Screamer then if I want that. The announcer is delightfully enthusiastic (and probably a straight rip-off of some Ridge Daytona Racer thing, but I don't care). Sorry anon. No offense meant. R4 is probably a killer game, and have all the fun you want. I just don't feel a need, a desire to find out what it's like. how many remakes, remaster and hd updates have you seen that have not infected an old game with modern bullshit? The temptation is huge, and very few developers manage to resist. >> No.3372264

>>3372250
Slightly off topic, but we're on different pages regarding what a remaster is and what a remake is although I contradicted myself with Klonoa. Even with Outrun 2, that is in no way a remaster. When in doubt, think of what a Bluray remaster is and what a film remake is.

>>3372258
If Zelda had a Ridge Racer level of drought disaster, giving me a Wind Waker or Twilight Princess "remaster" is almost a fuck you to the fans. Multiplayer sounds like a perk, but it feels more of an excuse to not make a brand new game. By the way, the modern era of Ridge Racer is literally rehashing old content. You already have old Ridge Racer content with new graphical assets and online multiplayer. Say no to remasters because all that money and time could've went into a whole new game.

>> No.3372271

>>3372264
>Outrun 2, that is in no way a remaster
hmm, I think it's why the game works. The developer(s) managed to keep the actual gameplay intact, and merely upgraded technical aspects, in a very careful manner. OutRun had successors, but the lost they OutRun vibe. OutRun 2 retained it. It's why I consider it a remaster. It's all there, just carefully retouched

>> No.3372278

>>3372271
The gameplay and driving feels pretty different than Outrun 1, especially when you factor in all the features of the home console versions. Just because it builds on top of what was good about the original doesn't mean it's a "remaster". You're talking about how it remains faithful with a few touch ups in essence, but a remaster refers to technical aspects. A remake is what relates to what you are expressing.

Yes something like a Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is most definitely a remaster because it's about taking remastering its resolution, aspect ratio, and all that technical goodness and has absolutely nothing to do with redoing assets. Just like a film, you are just taking the original film and transfering it for a newer, more advanced medium, you are not reshooting the film unless it's adding back bonus content. Why do people get so utterly confused with remake/remaster/reboot?

Dude, to remaster something is a very physical and technical process. Klonoa and Resident Evil are remakes because they are not using the original work. Metal Gear Solid HD Collection games are remasters because they are the original work. Twin Snakes is a remake because it's not using the original work. Trying to argue against technical facts is just trying to pick a fight.

I know Stage II had. Was it in the first game as well? Regardless, Redux and Extreme should be plenty fine. Usually PS versions are a nice choice, because emulators are, unlike the old Windows versions, stable on modern hardware and software. With Rollcage though, the original versions have been fixed to run practically flawlessly on modern hardware. There's very little reason to use the PS version under these circumstances

>there is no reason to have it on PS1
Well, most people will have an easier time running a the PS1 version on their PC than the actual PC version.
I found some late 90's PC game that work without much trouble, but those cases seem to be rare. But if you were to tell me it's easy to run Rollage on a modern PC, I'll get it.

If it's Win32 application and isn't just hard programmed to hardware, it usually works. You can play the first 3 Resident Evil games just fine.

the AI sucks shit anyways if you aren't facing 13th racing, so does a lack of cars really matter? Time Trial is my favorite part of retro racers like RR.

Don't know man, the entirety of Ridge Racer is about drifting and overtaking.

The AI cars stayed glued to the line, and collisions with them do nothing. So you're basically just on the track by yourself once you get past the AI. Tracks are pretty bland, sense of speed isn't very good; you don't really feel like a pro racecar driver when you're playing the game.

I thrifted a copy of this and was surprised to find that a) it's a pretty solid game and b) the PAL version at least is way rarer than I anticipated

Man I love DD2. Having a nice damage model for 20 cars was really impressive.

I just wish it had a derby league like the first game and a non-retarded scoring system for wrecking racing.
