Don't fall for this delicious may may, PS1 was better able to render 2D due to having a true 32bit bus architecture. The Saturns bus was 16bit, requiring twice as many word transfers which limited the framerate.

the ram carts fixed that, for whats worth, made it so sprite-based games could have more frames than the PS1 could handle.

Why are there more animations and sprites in the Saturn versions of SOTN and Street Fighter Alpha than the PS1 versions? (two examples)

There isn't for SOTN, and transparencies were made in to dithering as well.
And for Alpha? RAM. The RAM cart is the only thing that gave it the edge, and the only thing the PS1 was really lacking.

Throughput will hard limit the amount of animation you can push into the VRAM, and you need to push your graphics into VRAM before you can render them.

Since the VRAM was throughput limited, RAM cart games actually ended up having more slowdowns than games without them.

Check Cyberbots or Marvel Super Heroes with or without the RAM cart if you don't believe me.

>> No.3373037

Nanatsu Kaze No Shima Monogatari is the only exclusive I can think of atm. I think the Saturn was a good hybrid between the N64 and PS1 in that it ran nice-looking 3D models in real-time play rather well.

When it comes to 2D images though, I still think the PSX could have handled it nicely.

>>3372969
It wasn't just for animation, though.
Take metal slug for example, it could load the entire stage on the saturn, while on the ps1 it would have to access the disc multiple times throughout the stage.
Also, with X-men vs. Street Fighter, the saturn actually had the arcade's tag team mechanic intact, while it had to be removed from the ps1 port because it would have to load from the disc every time you wanted to tag characters.

>> No.3373215

Keio Flying Squadron 2
Wrestlemania the Arcade Game
Afterburner II
Outrun
Space Harrier
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Mega Man 8

The Saturn had some perfect ports of arcade games. The games that were on Saturn and PS were better and more detailed, with more frames of animation, on the Saturn version almost all of the time. Saturn versions were only inferior when it was handled by interns, like SotN.

None of those 2D games are going to wow you today when you have access to the arcade originals via MAME or even later ports to stronger consoles. Saturn had the edge (with the "optional" RAM cart) in some Capcom fighters as it featured more frames of animation than the PSX counterpart. Still, unless you are truly /vr/-core and have a Sony Trinitron ready to roll out perfect CRT goodness---just either emulate on MAME or play later re-releases. Saturn emu should be left for games with no other versions to sample.

>> No.3373524

What is this obsession with playing everything on MAME and avoiding ports? You do understand that home ports included content that wasn't available in the arcades, right? He listed several fighting games, and while I didn't play them I'd imagine those have multiple modes and maybe a training option.
I rarely go for arcade versions when fifth-gen systems already had some really great ports.

That's an emulator recording which eliminates the slowdown on the Saturn version. It is really the biggest fault with SSF, though it is handy if you just want to play the game.

On the real console the game runs slow as shit. It's the reason why I sold my 1mb pack-in cart version in one of the old /bst/ threads.

Not really, other than the slight jitteriness it's known for (whose intensity depended upon the skill of the dev utilizing the hardware) it was still rather decent for its time. Anyways, before the advent of graphics accelerator cards, some 3D DOS games with textured graphics had similar looking results (see: Magic Carpet)

>Even the Saturn wasn't that bad.
If anything, the 3D was very similar to that of the Playstation's, if a bit more simplified due to its using quads over polygons. The only advantage it had was being a bit less jittery (emphasis on "a bit") due to the backgrounds chip.
