I can't find it, but there was this Sims as with this gorgeous redhead on the beach and the punchline was something like "Getting her into a hot tub? Much harder."

That one, because hot redhead. Can't find it though.

Man I fucking love these old '90s gaming ads - the ones that are sexual in nature but are written subtly like that so that it would go over innocent kid's heads. That shit is fantastic. Some of these I remember seeing as a kid and having no idea what it meant (but I knew on some level that I was missing something) but now all these years later and it's like 'damn'.

Wow. I remember seeing this so much back in the day and i forgot about it. I never half paid attention to what game it was advertising, just always saw a fucked up hand.

This threads making me miss game commercials and magazines.

As shitty as some of the magazines got, I feel like they're still better than some game sites today.

Probably just the nostalgia hitting me though.

What you gotta remember is that when you were a kid, the magazines were basically all you had. And you'd read it over and over and go over stuff you wern't even interested in because you already bought the whole magazine and it was there and something to do. They might also seem better because you knew what was going on without actually being involved in the gaming culture and all its bullshit. A kind of safe isolation.

I've been going over old magazines a lot in the past few months. Most games sites today area trash but, the writing in the rags is almost always even shittier. It's far more dry reporting, more blatant advertisements than even modern corporate dick sucking, and incredibly cringey attempts at humor. For fuck's sake, Game Pro was Poochie in magazine form. Generally, the main things of value are archival purposes, finding specific art and ads, getting an idea of how things were at the time and finding interviews with developers. "New Games Journalism" is practically /vr/ in its own right at this point, but it was really the best thing that could have happened to games writing, whether you like it or not. Stuff like personal experience with games, actual discussion of game design, and using games to talk about other topics and issues is far more interesting than the latest press release.

Like the magaziens are charming in their own way, I wouldn't be going to the trouble of finding this shit it was wasn't. But anybody who seriously things games writing was better in those days is either just fucking delusional or the most boring man on Earth.

>Stuff like personal experience with games, actual discussion of game design,

This improves games writing

>and using games to talk about other topics and issues, etc.

This -could posibly- be used to improve games writing, but currently has only been used to whine about things.

>But anybody who seriously, SERIOUSLY thinks games writing was totes legitimately better in those days is either just fucking delusional or the most boring man on Earth.

This is why GameFan/GamePlayers/Tips&Tricks were so great: They weren't just boring fluff, but instead they either were legit excited about the games they covered (In terms of GameFan at least, they covered even Japan Only games that they simply were excited about, in turn making them seem even more enthusiast than a press releaser like EGM) or they covered ancillary material (I.E. AnimeFan, or the backpages of T&T).
