Man, I can not get into DQ4 at all. Ever since midway through Elena's chapter I started struggling to get motivated to keep playing. I think the constant switching characters just wore me out. Managed to get through Torneko's chapter because it was kind of fun playing the markets, but now I'm back to level 1 with the twins and I just don't care anymore.

Also IV has my favorite cast, great designs and everyone is useful in battle. While I won't say force yourself I highly recommend trying it again after taking a break. I think it's best if I just put it down for a bit and pick it up in a few days. Though at the same time, I am playing on the DS, and it might just be that I'm getting tired of the tiny ass screen. I'd play the NES version, but honestly I can't really stand the nes versions of 1-3 much. I don't seem to have much patience for NES games in general anymore. I don't think the PS1 version ever got a fan translation, so maybe I should just emulate the DS version that way I can sit back and have it on a bigger screen at least.

I think when you have fantasy games, and anime as well, featuring kids as the MC it helps capture a bit more of a sense of adventure. Kids naturally have a more innocent and wide-eyed view of the world which is refreshing, it's why I love Grandia so much. Once you get into teenage MCs things always seem to get bogged down in melodrama at some point.

Falcon Sword and Falcon Knife Earrings are almost always the better option for late game.
But if the character is still too weak, they may end up doing less damage total with the Falcon weapon.
For Alena in particular, with the Earrings she gets two chances to crit per turn. That's not exclusive to her, but she does have a much higher chance to crit, so it's worth mentioning.

------------------DQ7 SPOILERS-------------

47 hours in. Finally unlocked the class system. Any suggestions? I don't want to give SwordDance to everyone or anything like that. This is my plan so far:

Hero: Mariner > Warrior > Thief > Pirate

I know pirate isn't worth it, but he's a fisherman's son.

Gabo: Shepherd > Cleric > Fighter > Thief > Tamer

Tamer doesn't give me access to a third level class either, but it makes sense for Gabo. I think Cleric + Shepherd is the only way to get increase, and I don't want Shepherd on any other characters. Does the hero ger Increase naturally? Do any other human classes learn it?

Maribel: Mage > Bard > Cleric > Sage > Jester > Dancer > TeenIdol > Summoner

Maribel will be a Summoner, Gabo a Godhand and the Hero a Hero (after going through Godhand). Is this enough to beat the game?

I haven't met Aira or Melvin yet, so I'm not sure what I want to do with them. She will get SwordDance, that's for sure.

I think you are supposed to use the fire claw for a while until her natural strength reaches a certain number, but she's always strong enough by the time I get the fire claw.

Her real body was burned to ashes when the monsters destroyed "Sorceria". This stupid pun is literally the only reason they changed a perfectly fine name like Barbara. They did the same shit with "Carver".

>what does madante even mean
I've heard that most DQ spell names in Japanese are nonsense words that don't mean shit. Some of them vaguely sound like real words and a few are onomatopoeia.

The problem with the localizers making every spell sound like the real thing (woosh, frizz, crack) is that it sounds fucking stupid in English. The Japanese have onomatopoeias for thousands of things that don't really make a sound, like a smile or a stressful situation. They even have an onomatopoeia for SILENCE.

むらむら (to be horny)

ぐずぐず (procrastination)

じぃ~~~ (staring)

ぴかぴか (shining or twinkling light)

You can see these things in manga all the time. Japanese has "sounds" for everything, even if it makes no sense. That's why trying to do this in English is so cringeworthy. They should use generic spell names like in the Dragon Warrior era or just use the original spell names.

I think the "open" spell is the only one that is a pun in Japanese. Horii talked about it in an interview. It's supposed to sound like a girl saying "get out, you pervert!" because you opened the door to the bathroom, or something like that. I'm not making this shit up.

Anyway, what's the problem with nonsense words for spells, characters and towns names? Madante, Hoimi, Calberona, Reidock, Gabo, Ojiron, Gandino, Salabona, Granvania... It's fun and makes them stand out.

I'm surprised they didn't try to change Alefgard's name into some kind of "underworld" pun in the android ports.

Seriously? Just emulate it. This game is known for freezing half the time if your disc is even slightly scratched. And there's no way you are going to find an unused DW7 disc.

>b-buy I want to play it on the real thing
Sorry, it's unplayable now. You have to use an emulator.

I'll never understand why people hunt for old games instead of just emulating them. The worst part is when they dump the game from a slightly damaged disc or cartridge and upload it to a rom site, even though there are perfect roms floating around already.

This is bad for videogame perservation. What if the damaged rom is preserved instead of the good ones?

>Her real body was burned to ashes when the monsters destroyed "Sorceria"

I don't remember this aside from maybe one line. I suppose Carver's body was carved up too? I think you may be over examining this. Even then it's a cute name.

As far as spell names, I like the onomatopoeia stuff since it's memorable. You know that Kaboom is a stronger Boom spell, for example. Or that Kacrackle is a much stronger Crack. What are these spells even called in the Japanese versions, just nonsense words? Given Japan's taste for all things onomatopoetic, one would think the spells would follow suit. I guess not. Magic Burst isn't even an onomatopoeia and looks a little out of place because of it.

For towns, I feel the same way. A city in the dream world ruled by someone who never sleeps? Somnia is a great name. Reidock doesn't mean anything, it just sounds generic. A mountain town which has silk as its main export? Weaver's Peak. Lifecod sounds odd. Virtually every town gets the same treatment. While a few are over the top (let's call the city ruled by criminals Felonia) most of them sound nice and are memorable. I suppose it's a matter of personal taste though.

You can't honestly think these don't sound as idiotic as any other onomatopoeia. And it's common knowledge we've been using onomatopoeias like "Crack" and "Whoosh" since comics were first introduced as a mass media here in the West.

I agree with you on phonetics and even the name changes for main characters, but you act like the localization team is out to destroy everything you love.

>I suppose Carver's body was carved up too?
Carver is a carpenter... That's the pun.

>Given Japan's taste for all things onomatopoetic
It just doesn't work in English. The Japanese has very few sounds compared to English, which means that even sounds that make sense (rain, animal cries) are very easy to pronounce. It's really awkward to say "whoosh" or "frizzle" in English, but the Japanese sounds for those things sound just like normal words.

The sound of fire is "meramera". That's it. It's nothing like the sound it makes in real life. That's why this onomatopoeia stuff works in Japanese. The translators should just ignore it.

Japanese is also a very punny language. Not because they are always making puns, but because the language has very few sounds. It has LOADS of homonyms, that's why kanji are useful. This makes it very easy to make clever puns without even trying. A lot of words sound exactly the same.

Doing this in English is, again, much harder. It ends up looking stupid, especially because the translators have to constantly invent puns that work in English. They are not talented enough to do this, but they have to do it. That's why we end up with so many cringeworthy puns. English is not a punny language and the translators don't have talent for this.

But the worst part is that they keep ADDING horrible puns that weren't there in the Japanese version. 75% of the puns in these games didn't even exist in the first place.

You may like the puns, but it's infuriating for the people that do not like them. Mostly because they are turning DQ into something it's not. These games are not supposed to be a fucking punfest.

>A city in the dream world ruled by someone who never sleeps? Somnia is a great name
Yeah, but the city in the real world is also named Somnia, even though it has NOTHING to do with insomnia or dreams. The king is always sleeping because of a curse, but the town always had the same name. It makes no sense.

Why? I can resist it easily because I know how much it breaks the games.

Unlike certain other rpgs, DQ games are very well balanced. Leveling up or farming gold with fast forward completely kills the games. You can easily become an overpowered, rich hero in a few minutes, removing any hint of difficulty.

I guess my issue is that the translated names aren't distinct. Lifecod could be called Reidock and Reidock could be called Lifecod and there wouldn't be any issues. You can't do the same for the remake names since they're also a descriptor. This ends up making each name in the remake unique. I like that about them.

What is Sizz even called in Japan, do you know? I bet it's some nonsense word. The puns miss more often than they hit but DQ has never been a particularly dark or serious series so I don't really mind. A toggle in the options would be neat though.

I have several problems with the new translations. For me, it smacks of translators thinking they're more clever writers than the original creators. You'd never have this kind of disrespect for the source material with say, Final Fantasy.

Character names: What the hell is the point? Why change Flora to Nera? Because of the potential for pun with Bianca? That goes out the window when they don't change Debora. Worse yet is when the puns arbitrarily put in pop culture references (Josef Starling for example). Key characters DEFINITELY shouldn't have name changes.

Place Names: Again, unnecessary. In general, Horii does a good job of creating unique sounding place names. I think the ONLY time I liked a translated name over the original name is Angel Falls vs Wollo Village. But that's it. Coffinwell was the worst.

Spell names: I used to be butthurt about it, but now I'm less so. I think quite a few of them miss the mark and are confusing to figure out what they do, but overall, it's not a bad attempt at localizing the Japanese names. Contrary to popular US opinion though, the Japanese names aren't onomatopoeia, they just nonsense words.

Text: Here is where I get the most upset. Their wanton use of dialects and puns and cultural references piss me off. Furthermore, when nearly ever scene has injected humor, it detracts from when the game actually is trying to be funny. Yes the series is more humorous than most other RPGs, but they're still fairly serious.

The fire spell "Mera" is based off the sound of something burning. But on the other hand, the freezing spell, "Hyado" is based on the verb hiyasu 冷やす (to cool something down). The spell known as Return, or Zoom, Rula is probably based off the English word "Ruler" since it took you back to the castle of the king in the original game. The spell used to waken comrades "Zameha" is probably based of "Mezameru" 目覚める (to awake). So how should these be translated?

I would leave them as is. But I don't think the latest translation was completely offtrack in how it localized many of the spells. Some of them I think the older translation was closer in spirit and made more sense, but the fundamental strategy isn't on too shaky of ground.

Its definitely going to be opinion based, but the sad fact is, these changes have caused a kind of division in the once happy DQ community.

I won't deny many people like the style Plus Alpha came up with. But many others dislike it. And I can see where they're coming from. Even if I clamied to be okay with the accents (which I'm not), it changes the feeling you're suppose to get from the character. Yangus in the Japanese version of the PS2 game is obviously suppose to be your 'brute with a good heart' who is also quick tempered and easy to surprise. But there's more to him than that, a second layer that doesn't translate in words, but in action. He fits a very common stereotype in Anime, mainly Shonen Anime. On the flip side however, that extra 'layer' of his personality was kind of hidden in the western release. Instead it was replaced by a thick cockney acent and tons of excess dialogue. Scenes in the Japanese version which would have features no dialogue and instead focused on his visual reactions were 'translated' into the western version with 'COR BLIMEY' or 'LOVE A DUCK' and other such nonsense.

My point? While its obvious some things won't fully translate, the 'Honeywood' translation for DQVIII and later the Plus Alpha translations went too far and 'covered up' some things that could have been recognized, even by a western audience. I'd like to point out another accent filled game, Chrono Cross. While this game featured a number of accents for indavidual characters, the original core script was left intact as much as possible, as Honeywood worked directly with Masato Kano to decide how to change the dialogue as needed. This doesn't seem to be the case with the DQ localizations. Instead, most conflicts or things that were hard to translate seem to be blazently thrown out and replaced with British idoms or nonsense. And in the case of DQIV DS, Party Chat and some dialogue was removed completely.

>Any amount of liberties makes it Horribly Translated

I like that Horii wanted the series to be entirely accessible and all, but the game would be criticized if the script was too dry because English isn't as capable of the sort of inflection that Japanese can be (the original LoZ, for instance.) It would probably come off as somewhat dry and boring (which the GB translations do come off as, though I love those remakes)

Also there are too many instances of quality of life in the remake to make it not the definitive version, DQVII on PS1 was rushed and suffered from a lot of the same problems that DQII did. Both of the Hearbeat Dragon Quests I'd reckon represent a decline in polish for the series that was only recovered by Level-5.

The wives in V are nothing special, all of them are pretty forgettable.

Bianca could've been cool but other then spending one night with her she has no real characterization. She's kinda just generic.

Nera/Flora is the "sweet and cute" shy innocent girl. She appears out of nowhere and has no real characterization.

And Deborah is your "tsundere" who's a jerk at first but becomes more sweet as time goes on. While she has actual character development its the expected development every character archetype like her does.

Honestly it feels weird how much emphasis the wife aspect is given, it felt so rushed to me. The game had so many other cool aspects and themes yet they chose that. Still the idea of of battling evil with your wife and kids is so cool, I wish more games did this. Closest example that comes to mind is mother 3 and even then all you do is play as the heroes father at one point.

The Frieza saga was really cool, but everything after that was just more of the same. It's not like the manga stopped being good or anything, but it never managed to recapture the awesomeness of the child Goku and Frieza arcs.

My favorite villain was Tao Pai Pai. He defied the laws of physics. But the most memorable scene for me was that part when adult Goku used the spaceship to travel to Planet Namek while training using the Gravity Machine, slowly increasing the gravity from 10x to 20x and so on.

Every time he managed to move without any problems at 20x gravity and then returned the gravity to normal, you really could feel how strong he was. He was able to move and hit things 20 times faster! It was more impressive than any SSJ transformation.

I agree that it never got bad (well except Buu) it just seem to turn from just a fun adventure comic to just a manga about training and fighting. You kind of see it right before Z started with him against Piccolo in the tournament. Once that started it stop really becoming anything more than that. Original was weird and made little sense but I feel that's what made it fun. There was a rabbit that turned people into carrots, pig that can transform into anything he wants for a short period of time, a cat that trained people, and actually meeting what is meant to be Earth God. The only interesting thing once Z started was a guy that can switch minds which kind of ends a bit too fast and it's that interesting because he was just a henchmen for Frieza.

Ephraim sauntered, wiggling his buttock-augmentation. Life couldn't get any better. This, he knew, was due to an incontrovertible fact:

Naked asses are the final equalizer. Everyone's got an ass and, if honestly appraised, they all look ridiculous.

Imagine Saddam naked, awkwardly bending for the soap. Or Osama squatting in a humid cave. Don't seem so threatening now do they?

The ass has equalized.

But Ephraim thought he had the system beat. His logic; if all asses are ridiculous, then mine will be the most ridiculous of them all.

I will be King of all Asses.

A difficult point to argue.

It's mainly the dialogue that's censored. There is a scene where Goku asks Bulma why she has "a butt on her chest", but some translations completely ignore the original text and change it into something completely innocent.

Some versions edited this scene by covering Bulma's panties but leaving her hands in the same position, which makes no sense.

The problem is that a lot of sites have the full manga but with some chapters censored. If I want to collect and preserve all the volumes in my HDD, I'm fucked.

Mario Party 8's use of the word "spastic" got it recalled and temporarily banned in the UK until a revision changed it.

After that, Nintendo decided to have NoE do their own separate English translations for games for release in EU.

NoA and NoE both seem befuddle how they should localize their games. Sometimes they seem fine with sexual stuff in their games while others times they feel the need to cover things up. I have a theory that there are people within the localization teams that want to keep most if not everything and slowly trying to win over people there. Since before any sexualization in almost any form was bad now they leave things in. Not saying its great because of dumb things like #FE having to completely rewrite a whole chapter because of NoA but I do think they are trying at times.

Yeah Atlus localized #FE but do you really think Atlus would have gone as far as they did without NoA having some sort of hand in it? Feel localizers has a choice in the matter on listening to Nintendo or not (Bayonetta 2 for instance) but some think that NoA would know best about their audience and do what they are told. Hence why when it comes to Nintendo publish games they tend to get more localized with the outfits than most other games.

Ahahahaha. You have no fucking idea what went on in the localization of that game. I've seen bits and pieces of the English localization, and it's pretty dry, but accurate in several places, but there are also times when the localizers "spiced things up". Like the "little slave girl" comment the Wind spirit made. Not in the Japanese version at all. And do you remember the joke Sharkeye made about turning a guy into a slave? Not in the Japanese PSX or 3DS version at all.

It's a late 90s PSX RPG localization, and it shows. It's overly literal and dry in places, it's overly liberal and punched up in others.

Really!? Woo… great. Matilda is protecting this town from monsters right now, but I haven’t seen her lately… Father’s injured too, and even Matilda’s gone…”
>Father moans a bit
>”Father… Are you alright? Is your injury hurting you? Oh, I’m sorry, I just cut off in the middle of talking to you… This person sleeping here is my father. Father’s a warrior of the village. He was injured in a fight with some monsters while trying to save the women… The doctor said that we need a glittering, green gemstone to cure him, but the mine to the south east is full of monsters now, so no one can get it. I was hoping to ask Matilda to go get it if I saw her. If you guys see her, could you pass along the message? I’d like to go look for her myself, but I’ve got to watch my father…

I don't know what he talks like in the English PSX version, I've never played it, but in the Japanese version, he kinda speaks in a mature tone. I mean, just looking at the text there's nothing all that special about it, but he's serious, and a surprising amount of kanji is used in his dialogue. Usually, small kids like that speak almost entirely in kana, it's a sign of immaturity. If I recall correctly, the Keeper's Diary in Resident Evil was like that, had more and more kana the more and more the writer's mind deteriorated. I've also seen stuff like that in other things as well. But Patrick here uses more kanji in his dialogue than I'd expect for a kid his age to use. I didn't really think about it when I first played the game, but this talk about how he speaks got me thinking about it.

So yeah, it seems like he has a bit of a mature tone in the Japanese versions.

>play them in spanish and skip the accents
What? The accents in Spanish are even worse. All the European translations are based on the English ones. That means they have accents and puns up the ass, but they are even dumber because it's a translation of a translation.

Ragnar speaks normally in Spanish. Alena's chapter is even worse than in English because all the dialogue is written with a mix of normal and cyrillic letters (backwards R's and shit like that). Taloon's accent is barely noticeable, but he's not Irish. I think he's supposed to speak like an Arabic person. Nara and Mara's chapter is full of incomprehensible French sentences and characters speaking Spanish with a French accent, which is even more annoying than in English.

In 5, all the main villains speak broken Spanish with cyrillic letters too. Deborah is called Stephania. Ludman is "Santino Rimaldi". There are a few towns with accents, just like in English.

In 6, Terry is Norris (a horrible Chuck Norris reference, probably because he's so strong), Milayou is Mencía, Barbara is Lucía (cute name, though), Hassan is Ebanisto and speaks like a person from Andalusia (kind of like a hick, but less bad), Amos is Aniceto and speaks in Catalan (a sort of dialect of Spanish that could be considered its own language, it's like Ragnar's Scottish accent), Chamoro is Francis. Calberona is called Meigan, which is an improvement from Sorceria in my opinion.

The games are filled with puns and accents, and most of the time they are even worse than in English because European translators didn't come up with this shit and don't have the passion for puns that Plus Alpha had. The puns are horrible and lazy.

IX is filled with Spanish pop culture references and Chiquito de la calzada jokes (a 90's comedian known for having dozens of dumb catchphrases).

I'll never understand this complaint. You are supposed to talk to everyone. That's the point of playing these games. The NPCs are usually interesting and the bulk of the story is told through them.

Do people seriously play DQ games without talking to everyone? They are really missing out.

I would understand it if you already played the game before and don't want to talk to absolutely everyone again. In DQ6, you have to talk to the prisoner in the Reidock prison to make captain Tom appear. That doesn't make much sense, but the triggers are usually very intuitive.

Hargon wants Malroth to destroy the world. Maybe he has reasons beyond being evil.

Saro is the least evil villain in the series.

Mildrath is a bastard, but he barely does anything by himself.

Deathtamoor is a more evil version of Zoma. His world is designed to make people suffer and he can even turn back time to make those greedy people kill each other over and over again.

Orgodemir is literally Satan.

I always choose Flora in the SFC version. She's a better mage than Bianca. I would choose her even if she was garbage in battle, though. The game wants you to choose Bianca, but that only makes the act of choosing Flora more meaningful.

The idea of marrying a rich, princess-like girl and taking her out of that boring place appeals to me more than marrying my childhood friend. Also, I like blue hair.

The other reason is that I want to remember Bianca as a cute loli. I do this in real life too. I don't want to meet any of my old classmates because they are probably a lot uglier than they were in fifth grade. I don't want to taint my memories of them.

By the way, does anyone else think that the daughter looks like a preteen in the SFC version? It's probably because the son's spiky hair makes him look shorter, but she looks a couple years older than him even though they are twins.

One of the kings gives you the moon crest for killing a pink tiger.

The star crest is at the top of a tower. You get if after the boss fight.

The water crest is in that suspicious building in Hamlin. You go into the cell, kill a couple of monsters and there's no sign of the crest. There's no way this place has no purpose, so you search the ground and there it is.

The life crest in a chest in the cave to Rhone. You enter the cave, fall into a hole and there are lots of chests around you. There's no reason to ignore them.

I admit that the fire crest is bullshit because you have to step outside the building to find it.

All the crest locations are hinted at by NPCs. You even get a flute that can tell you if there's a crest on the screen.

Someone hints that the fire crest must be in the fire shrine. While using the traveler's gates, you realize that the place has something to do with fire and that it must be the fire shrine they were talking about. You use the flute and it tells you that there's a crest hidden somewhere. After examining each tile, you realize that it must be outside the shrine and that you can walk around without going into the world map.

It's not that cryptic, really.

DQVII has made me realize something about Chrono Trigger... Every time Crono and his friends travel to the future, their parents spend their whole lives without seeing them again and die of old age without knowing what the hell happened to them. That's really sad.

HUGE DQ7 SPOILERS BELOW (Verdham village)

The first time you visit Verdham, they ask you to find a potion for Pepe and several NPCs say that Engow is to the east, beyond the mountains. But apparently, Mt. Flame has disappeared. There's even a soldier that was sent by Pamela to buy herbs, but now he's trapped in Verdham and doesn't know how to return home.

If you walk to the east, there's a circle of mountains that looks exactly like the place where Mt. Flame used to be. The map looks very similar, but Engow is nowhere to be seen. The first time I played, I thought we had time traveled to Verdham in the ORIGINAL past, a short time after the explosion of Mt. Flame, which had destroyed the mountains separating Engow from Verdham.

I thought this was a weird but interesting way to handle time travel. In the present, the new islands appear suddenly, surprising the people of Estard. But as far as the people in those islands are concerned, Estard had always been there. All that weird stuff in Verdham made me think that the past worked in a strange way too. The portals to the past send you to different time periods, because not all the disasters happened at the same time, but they all ignore the changes you made in the other islands, meaning that Engow is destroyed in past Verdham. It's like the "essence" of every island was turned into a stone tablet that can send you to a time before the tragedy, that's why they ignore any changes you made in history before that point.

But it turns out that I was completely wrong. That suspicious place "where Mt. Flame used to be" is just a mountain formation that looks similar to the one surrounding Mt. Flame. It's just an empty space where Mentare will be in the future. Apparently, all the islands in the past were separated into different dimensions by the demon lord, while big continents like the Verdham-Engow one were cut in half and sealed away separately.

It was just a gimmick so you could have a medieval era, a prehistoric era, a post-apocalyptic era, and so on all in the same game. If you stop and think about the ramifications of time travel, the cast of CT should have erased themselves from existence or destroyed the Universe with a paradox a dozen times over with the stuff they were doing. But the game just carried on without ever explaining or exploring how time travel should work.

But then they made Chrono Cross and the point of that game WAS that the CT kids accidentally the whole Universe.

There are no paradoxes if your mere presence in the past simply creates a new timeline. You can change all the shit you want, you won't erase yourself from existence because you come from a different timeline (that has become completely inaccessible forever).

The problem is that Chrono Trigger doesn't seem to work that way. I think the game implies that there's only one timeline that you keep altering.

Also, having multiple timelines would mean that all your hard work is for nothing. Crono will never see the future he helped to create, he will be long dead by the year 1999. He's saving the world for the sake of future generations, but that loses all meaning if there are countless timelines where they get fucked by Lavos.

With this spoilerific objective complete, the postgame's over. Dragon Quest III is finally complete. All that's left is VIII and I'll have played at least 1 version of every game in the series (besides X because its a JP-only MMO).

Very cool game, and an important part of RPG history(even if I played the remake like a scrub). Lives up to its hype, and while it isn't my favorite, I certainly can see why some people have it as theirs.

I could get the final wish of the Naughty Book but that would take forever to grind for. I'm happy with the board game and Ortega being alive.

>>3376579
My only problem with the game is the idea of Lavos existing beyond time or whatever. I'm not sure if I'm remebering correctly, but didn't they mention something like that near the end? He's so powerful that he isn't affected by time, just like the Black Omen. I think that's total horsecrap.

It's obvious that the dying Earth is the "entity" creating the time gates. The planet is "remembering" its whole life before death, allowing Crono to travel through time. But apparently, Lavos can also send people through time because he's so powerful. What the hell?

The only time I liked the idea of something existing beyond time was in Illusion of Gaia. The evil comet passes near Earth every 100 years or so, altering the evolution of the planet and its inhabitants every time. When you destroy it, the comet disappears as if it had never existed in the first place. The shape of the continents, the existence of magic, all the weird creatures, all the villages and kingdoms... everything changes. The Earth goes back to how it SHOULD have been, without the influence of the comet. Will and Kara go back to Earth and are reborn in a world that looks exactly like the Earth in real life. They are living in the same time period as before, but now the past and the present are completely different because all the influence of the comet has been erased from history.

The plot of that game makes no fucking sense, it's just a bunch of weird, depressing shit that happens for no reason. The translation doesn't help, because it makes the story even more nonsensical and censors religious suff. The characters are crap, the plot is crap and the gameplay is kind of mediocre.

But god damn, the ending is one of the BEST in RPG history. It reminds me of the ending in the first Kingdom Hearts. It's absolutely beautiful. This game could have been a masterpiece if Will and Kara were developed as characters and the plot made any sense. That ending, man...

I'm a little worried about it because I have a feeling Nintendo is going to do their "engineered" shortages to encourage digital sales. I have copies ordered for me and some others that I want to gift DQ too...

That said, the last play-through I did I used an all-male party because I named and based their personalities off of some friends. Was good fun.

Turns out that there's quite a few differences for beating DQIII without the Hero.

Other people are impressed that you managed to beat the game without a Hero and one guy cheers for him before realizing that he isn't present. You still get congratulated as being the warriors chosen by the Hero and then this happens.

This is the only time Dragon Quest lets you have a five person party.

The PS1 version is amazing, the only problem is that it's a bit hard to emulate correctly, like a lot of PS1 games.

The 3DS version looks a lot better, but the translation will probably be shit. This game is very focused on the NPCs and their stories. If they randomly give an entire town a russian accent or shit like that... It will make you pay more attention to the accents than to what they are actually saying. If it's really bad, it can make you want to stop talking to people, which is absolutely terrible for this game in particular. It has the best NPC dialogue in the series. You should want to talk to them as often as possible, after every little event, to hear what they have to say. You are not supposed to hate everyone's guts because their accent is annoying.

The game can also get very sad, but that would be ruined if the characters and towns get punny names that make you cringe and prevent you from taking the story seriously.

If you don't care about any of that, play the remake. If you know you hate that stuff, go for the original right now. It's LONG and exhausting, but you will enjoy every minute of it.

It's obvious that they are going for the same style of localizations as the previous remakes. It could be better or worse, but it's practically confirmed that it will have puns and accents up the ass. Especially puns.

Can you really imagine them not giving important characters ridiculous names just for a pun? They toned down the accents after DQIV, but the puns only got worse over time. Remember all the name changes in VI? The constant puns and alliteration in IX? That one was painful.

I'm not sure, but I think the king of Aliahan gives it to you after beating Baramos. It's not the best sword in the game or anything, it's just more powerful than what you'd normally be able to get at that point in the game.

I don't really know anything for sure, though.

Why can't the people of Alefgard just build a bridge to the dragonlord's castle? Why must I find all this shit just to create a rainbow bridge?

And WHY does the rainbow bridge look like a normal ass bridge in all three versions of DQ1 and all three versions of DQ3?! Seriously, what the fuck?

The rainbow drop looks beautiful, though.

This is purely speculation on my part, I have nothing from the game itself to back me up, but maybe if the people tried to build a conventional bridge the Dragonlord's (or Zoma's) monsters would attack them and stop the construction. Whereas the Rainbow Drop is just a tool that magically creates a bridge instantly.

I don't care how immature some may find it, renaming my bag to "ass" was the best decision I've made playing DW7.

"I've stored everything you couldn't hold in your ass."

"Can't carry it? I'll just put it in your ass."

"Hero shifted the tinymedal to his ass."

"Maribel took the Dung from her ass"

One recent and fond memory is when one of the helmeted buff guys said "Can't carry it? I'll just toss it in your ass." Took me by surprise, since most merchants say "put."

I wonder if this is the reason they added this feature. Why else would you want to rename your bag?

They will probably remove this from the remake. The English version of DQ6 DS didn't let you rename the bag at all because "bag" was a banned word and you wouldn't be able to restore the original name if you changed it.

Fucking bullshit.

I do not know how, as I am a massive fan of the DS remakes for IV/V, but the music for the DS version of VI was butchered. The original was grand and unique, while the remake sounds blurry and faded. The SNES version of DQVI's sountrack is in my opinion, the best Sugiyama has ever composed.
