Okay this is just going too far
>implying a floppy disk's jacket is better protection than the plastic coating pressed optical media is encased airtight within

Manufacturing defects can happen with any media and I will concede that on 3DO and CDi games it's probably a good idea to at least look at the disc before you buy since in my experience numbers approaching 5% of those games show defects. Sega CDs including Saturn present occasional pressing errors as well. I don't find GD-roms to be this way and I suspect that by the 6th gen manufacturing standards improved but at the same time denser data means more susceptibility to physical damage and better polishing levels required (thus the explosion of resurfacing machines) and now that 6th gen lasers are running low across the board I think we see DVD roms with minor wear and tear being put into consoles with dim lasers causing a lot of people to call disc rot where in fact there is none

tl;dr I'll be happy to buy any and all optical media for pennies on the dollar from anyone who thinks disc rot is gonna get them - other than those idiots who leave their loose discs in their moldy basement then shirk responsibility by claiming disc rot got 'em

>> No.3341463

>>3341440
The difference is that floppy disks store data magnetically so they are constantly repaired by magnetic fields.
CDs on the other hand use pits which are eroded by the scanning laser just like a record is scratched by the needle.

>> No.3341470

>>3341463
This.
I can re-write my Amiga disks, and they're just like new.

>> No.3341496

>>3341440
Thats not the point

The point is that digital data locked inside deprecated medium is doomed to failure

optical discs are.specially annoyng because mishandling gradually damages it,

Carts Roms can be safely backup up nowadays but thats mostly because of logarithmic data density inxrease in past eras, but still generation 6th and even 7th can be backup up in a single hdd but u cant play ur backups without modding the console...
And you can even have trouble obtaining second hand original copy with no scratches that would hinder a perfect backup.

hdvdv and blurays will be a bitch in the futire. Hdd density growth keeps diminishing and the consoles and media copy prptection are much more complex

>> No.3341498

>>3341463
>>3341470
But that's wrong. Oxidation will compromise the magnetic qualities of the media. The only advantage is the astronomically lower data density. You can hack checksums with a pin for fuck's sake.
