So I saw this port of Cave Story to the Sega Genesis the other day, and I was pretty impressed with how someone managed to get a game from 2004 running on a console from the 80s.

And it got me wondering, are there any other examples of non-retro games being ported to retro consoles? This kind of thing is fascinating to me

Retro City Rampage can both be downloaded and played in DOSbox, or the developer sells a version on floppies that can be played on an authentic 486 MS-DOS machine. He's also working on a version for the NES. I would get links but this info isnt hard at all to find. Retro City Rampage came out in late 2012.

Hell, /v/ has gotten surprisingly good in the past year or so. If you know how to navigate in between shit threads, you'll find better retro discussions than tend to be had here along with thinly veiled off topic threads that usually surpass what you find on boards supposed to be dedicated to that topic.
And this saddens me, /vr/ has always been a pretty small board, but it started off pretty nice, a breath of fresh air from the inanity and childishness of /V/. Then, the sort of stunted elitist asshole that tends to ruin other retro communities latched on, the sort that has been stuck autismally on some particular aspect of the past for too long without venturing out of their comfort zone, not having the intellectual or emotional capability to recognize that other interests and opinions exist outside of their "objective" (in their eyes) obsession.

This is the kind of language I find funny. Dishonest is a pretty strong word. Maybe some kids who never saw an NES game think that's what they actually looked like. Myself and everyone I've talked to about that game in real life (ie not 4chan) just understand it's supposed to be reminiscent of 8 bit games, not literally trying to be one. It's not 10/10, but it's a decent game with a neat aesthetic (if you enjoy that sort of thing).

Here though every reaction has to be extreme and everyone gets upset over everything. It's great.

>> No.3351716 [DELETED]

>>3351704
>Dishonest is a pretty strong word
It's intended to be. The developer pretends it's related to 8-bit visuals, but it's not. The reason to pretend is to appeal to nostalgia, in order to improve sales. If the devs had genuine interest, they'd not violate the spirit of the sprite work so consistently and lazily

>it's supposed to be reminiscent of 8 bit games
And it fails very badly at that, in particular because it violates all these annoying restrictions that lead to 8-bit games being the way they are. It was not a fashion statement, it was design out of necessity. SK is forgetting all that, and in turn producing a turd

>it's a decent game
oh it can be, I don't know, don't care. It's not my kind of game

>a neat aesthetic

I'm a game artist and the majority of the indie developers I've bumped into just build their prototypes with pixel art since it's simple. Once it's playable they always refuse to change the resolution, because they usually hard-code everything in pixel values.

The game is irrevocably borked. Many enemies are invisible. Many others, particularly later in the game, don't move. The only bosses that move are the first two. Getting the machine gun breaks the game. The labrynth cannot be traversed. Some doors cannot be entered correctly, particularly the one to exit Kazuma's shack. Graphical glitches everywhere. Game routinely crashes inexplicably.
My verdict: it was good while it lasted, even despite its many, many, MANY glaring flaws, but there are many ways to get into no-win situations and I'm tired of starting over from the beginning to find ways around them.

I'm aware that this was rhetorical, but I'm going to respond anyway because I feel further discussion has merit.

Homebrew is any software developed for a system that is intended to be a closed system, either through proprietary storage mediums or other methods, by unofficial sources. Indie has no good uniform meaning in the gaming sphere, but the original term indie was slang for independent developement, or developement without backing from a larger company.

One does not preclude it from being the other, these ideas are not at odds with one another. What I was trying so say earlier is that according to board rules, the discussion of the consoles on which you play the games is enough, otherwise we wouldn't be able to discuss new games for old consoles ever, such as pic related.
